To get back to him, she fakes pregnancy, which leads to personal disaster for several people.

On the way from Munich, Germany, where the first half of the story takes place, to Venice, Eva's car breaks down somewhere in the Alps, so she, Nick, and her two children walk and hitchhike the rest of the way. They arrive without money, passports, credit cards, their clothes torn and burnt, on a Friday evening, which means that they have to spend the weekend without any support from the German embassy.

- The Munich ethics teacher Leo Andresen has moved into a new house with his wife Hannah and his nine-month-old daughter Teresa. His rector Thomas Reuter, an old friend, supports him and Leo is about to take a career leap. In fact, he should be perfectly happy. Nevertheless, he looks with a certain envy at his friend Arthur Steurer, who leads a single life without the slightest obligation, according to the motto: "relaxed in the here and now". When the two go to a conference in Verona, where Leo is supposed to give an important lecture and convince the representative of the Ministry of Education of his qualities, there are irritations. During a sightseeing tour of the city, the beautiful tour guide Elsa makes advances to the staid family man - and he cannot escape the influence of the passionate young woman, who seems to have the independent spirit of a cat. Leo gets involved in a night of love, neglects his job and finally returns to Munich completely distraught. Though Arthur is willing to cover for him, Leo makes a confession to his wife - after all, having sex with Elsa was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, his attempt to communicate with Hannah fails when Elsa suddenly appears at the door. Leo's whole existence falls into ruins. The teacher of ethics has to ask himself how his own morals are and what he actually wants: a middle-class life with a home savings contract - or the love of the "cat woman".

They become a couple, but after a while, Mathilde meets Carlo, who apologizes and admits being married to a dead sick woman, again...
- Lars Schelling runs a sushi-bar in Berlin in ca. 2001 that the Mafia finances. The Mafia wants its money back. Suddenly Lars's mother dies, and Lars himself gets followed and kidnapped. In fact, the Mafia has nothing to do with these latter events. It is rather former members of the East German state police. Lars's mother, it seems, had the documentation for a money laundering scam in the 1990s that funneled enormous sums from East German sources into a Swiss bank account for bribing government officials of the united Germany. The question is whether Lars learned the password to the Swiss lock box where the documentation is hidden before his mother's mysterious death. The press, East Germany's former state police, and Germany's legitimate police all want to know. The question driving the plot, however, is who belongs to which group, whether Lars really knows the password, and what he will do with what he knows and has.
