Florence, mad with jealousy and hatred for her niece, sets the police after him.

He will finally achieve his end when Caroline, now widowed and needing a man to help her manage her business, asks him... to marry her!

The next day, Andrea, the oldest son, indirectly causes the death of Diego and Wanda Costa. Don Salvatore has him eliminated and has Saro Costa, the honest share-farmers' ten-year-old son,sent to America. Fifteen years later, Saro, now a handsome well-built young man, is back...

Nevertheless Laennec is the laughing stock of many a fellow-colleague, especially famed Doctor Broussais. But , remaining undeterred, Laennec goes on with his research. He works hard, too hard, until he too gets struck by the "enemy".
