When one of the suspects is also murdered, Dalgliesh learns a key piece of information.

As the investigation continues, there appear to be no end to the number of people who would like to have seen Seton dead, including his brother Digby, who stands to inherit, and literary critic Oliver Latham who was perpetually in debt. In his personal life, Dalgleish's relationship with Deborah Riscoe comes to a crossroads when the investigation interferes with their private life.

Dalgliesh and his team can't quite figure out why they've been assigned to what seems to be a straightforward murder case but it's clear that his superiors want him to get in and out as quickly as possible. There is any number of possible suspects and as Dalgliesh is fond to say, the motive for murder is inevitably greed or love.

She "Annette" does enter the inn where a local mentions the name 'Logan' to her. Her and Hardy leave and drive on until the car breaks down. They are forced to stay at a quaint inn in the woods where all is not as it seems. Hardy calls his wife played by Jenifer Hilary to tell her he can't get home. He shares the only available room with Annette having kissed her earlier in the woods. In the morning he wakes to find her gone and the landlady Mrs. Farren (Isabel Dean)believes her bicycle has been taken by Annette. Annette is later found murdered. At first Mrs Farren's husband is a suspect and Edmund himself. He must prove his innocence, risking his wife finding out and trying to find out who did murder, Annette.

While doing this, they sometimes seize animals that are in urgant need of medical care or show signs of abuse. Unlike the ASPCA in New York, these investigators do not have arrest powers, however, they do have the authority to request search and/or arrest warrants be issues and then turn the warrants over to either the Detroit Police Department or the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to be served. The agents also work closely with the Detroit Police and Detroit Animal Control on a task force designed to rid Detroit of dog fighting.
