- The story of India's freedom struggle between the years 1825 and 1875.
- Circa British rule in India, Harnam betrays a freedom fighter, and as a result is rewarded, but the freedom fighter is killed, leaving his wife, and family devastated and destitute. Years later, the freedom fighter's son, Bharat, has grown up and goes to Britain to study. On his arrival in Britain, he is quite shocked to find that the Indian population settled there, shun India and Indians. He takes it upon himself to try and change their way of thinking, meets with Prithi, a Blondie of Indian origin, and both fall in love. Prithi accompanies him to India, and is appalled at the conditions that Bharat and his family in. Will this shock end their relationship?

- Shankar (Manoj Kumar), his lovely wife Geeta (Nanda) and Deepak (Master Satyajeet) are a poor but happy family. Tragedy strikes one day, when Deepak wonders over to the railway tracks. When Geeta rushes in to warn and rescue him, she is run over by the train and is instantly killed. Deepak loses his vocal chords and cannot speak. Shankar takes Deepak to see a doctor (Raj Mehra), who examines Deepak, and tells Shankar that Deepak can recover his voice after a surgerical operation, which may cost around 1000 to 1500 rupees. Shankar is unable to afford this but is determined to find the money to cure his son. Shankar's mom (Kamini Kaushal), sister (Naaz), Khan Badshan (Prem Nath), Rani alias Raat ki Rani (Jaya Bhaduri) offer support. And Shankar takes part in a grueling tournament that puts his very life at risk.

- Wealthy businessman, Srivastav, lives in a palatial house with his wife, Yashoda, and an only child, a son named Shyam, who likes to paint. Shyam is expected to marry Renu, the daughter of a business-friend, Kailashnath. Unknown to both the families, Shyam and Renu have already met, and fallen in love. When things start going wrong with the Srivastav's business dealings, they stand to lose everything, until and unless Shyam marries the only daughter, Menaka Rai, of the most wealthiest man in Bombay. Yashoda and her husband readily agree to this marriage, but Shyam refuses, as a result is asked to leave the house, and his parents will have nothing to do with him. Shyam and Renu begin their life together, but the unexpected happens, and a woman who is in love with Shyam, Meera, is killed and the police arrest Shyam for her death. He is produced in Court and is sentenced to die. But then the unexpected happens again, as Meera is still alive, and as a result Shyam is freed from prison. He goes to meet Renu and renew their love and get married, only to find out that Renu has got married to a Dr. Prakash, and will have nothing to do with him. A devastated Shyam must now decide to carry on with life and marry Meera, or go on a path of self-destruction.
