- Judge Truscott's daughter, Helen, spurns society life for social work among the poor immigrants. She is soon befriended by heavyweight boxing contender Dan Williams, who saves her from a runaway horse. Dan's nephew, Johnny, is abducted on the eve of the championship fight and is threatened with harm unless Dan agrees to be knocked out in the fifth round. While the bout is underway, Helen and some of Johnny's friends rescue the boy. They arrive at the fight as the fifth round approaches, and Dan wins the championship, along with Helen.
- Luther Caldwell , a New York millionaire, encourages Cliff Redfern, the foreman of his Montana ranch, to take his twenty-four-year-old son Ned out West to cure Ned's boredom which led him to announce that he wants to die. Caldwell's daughter Prudence, who thinks that Redfern is uncouth, helps Ned avoid him, but after Redfern enters a fashionable restaurant, lassoes Ned, and drags him to a train, Prudence and her father follow. While Redfern reads a book on etiquette to polish his manners, Ned, excited by Redfern's stories, emerges from his sadness. For Ned's benefit, Redfern wires McCann on the ranch to stage a fake cattle rustling scene when they arrive, but McCann uses the opportunity to steal the herd and blame Redfern. When Prudence denounces Redfern, he pulls her onto his horse and rides off to trail the thieves. After McCann is caught and confesses, Redfern ropes Prudence from the platform of a train bound for New York, and they marry.
- To save her brother from going to prison on a forgery charge, Helene Salvidar agrees to shadow Tom Galloway, who is suspected of smuggling emeralds. Helene and Tom meet at a weekend party and fall in love. J. Dallas Durand, the detective who has forced Helene to watch Tom, finds Tom with an emerald, and Tom bribes him with a large sum of money to keep quiet. After Durand accepts the money, Tom reveals himself to be the head of the detective agency for which Durand works. Tom fires Durand and helps Helene keep her brother out of prison.
- Gregory Thorne and Marta Milbanke are engaged. Their fathers are millionaire ship owners. Gregory's efforts to inject a little excitement into their engagement life are fruitless, but when Mr. Milbanke receives an anonymous letter which threatens disaster to his home and fortune if he permits a shipload of supplies for the Allies to leave the docks the young man sees an opportunity for creating what he longs for and tells Mr. Milbanke that he knows who has written the letter but that he will not divulge the man's identity. Gregory, who suspects Count Hilgar Eckstrom, is told that he must terminate his engagement with Marta. But this is what Gregory wants, so he plans to abduct his sweetheart. Gregory's men clash with Eckstrom's gang, who has also come to kidnap Marta, and the disturbance results in the arrival of the police. Marta by mistake, allows herself to be carried off by Eckstrom's men and is taken a prisoner. Gregory, following, is also made a captive, and the young people are held as hostages. How Gregory outwits Eckstrom and places him and his gang in the hands of the law brings about a startling climax.
- A young man hopes his policeman's uniform will help his courtship of a young lady, but discovers that he is expected to clean up the town of its criminal elements before he can win her for good.
- The clerks at a New York hotel near Times Square turn away customers until they approve millionaire John Stonehouse and give him room 420. While attempting suicide, John hears a shot from a nearby room. Finding Gilberte Bonheur bending over the limp body of Aaron Witt, whom, she says, she shot when he tried to assault her, John, wanting to die anyway, offers to take the blame. He escapes after recovering an emerald that Witt used to blackmail Gilberte. After Gilberte, Witt, and the clerks conspire, John helps Gilberte hide Witt, who revives and demands the emerald or its value. John writes a check and leaves taking a theater ticket given to him by Gilbert. John, who contemplated suicide because he accidentally drank a strange poison, now receives an antidote which his chemist created. Cured, he goes to the theater and sees the happenings in the hotel enacted. Backstage, Gilberte explains that the ruse was to prove to a critic that the plot could really happen. They then confess their mutual love.
- Richard Chester, a bachelor who has lost everything in a poker game, blunders into the apartment of Nora Ellis, who has just inherited a fortune under the stipulation that she marry immediately. Assuming the name Chester Dick, Richard marries Nora and leaves. Unaware of this marriage of convenience, Charles Renalls, Nora's suitor, later assumes that her wealth is the only impediment to their union and conspires to ruin her on the market. Upon learning of his scheme, Richard ruins Charles. Nora falls in love with Richard, not recognizing her benefactor as her husband of an evening. Hoping to spoil Richard's chances with Nora, Charles tells her that Richard is already married and that he carries his wife's picture in his pocket. To her surprise and delight, Nora discovers that the incriminating picture is her own photograph and that Richard is already her husband.
- While visiting Canada on business, Tom Morse falls in love with Jessie McRae, a headstrong girl who was adopted as an infant by Scotsman Angus McRae after her parents were supposedly killed by drunken Native Americans. Angus has a longstanding grudge against Tom's Uncle Carle and forbids the younger Morse to see Jessie. The Scotsman then "sells" her to bootlegger Bully West, while Tom is commissioned by the government to halt the illegal liquor trade. After Tom settles the feud between Angus and Carl, he rescues Jessie from Bully and returns her to her repentant father, who reveals that she is his actual daughter.
- Wealthy diamond collector Larry Hanrahan is given the opportunity to assist the beautiful, jewel-bedecked woman he admires in a Broadway café when she and her guardian are attacked by robbers. Larry is invited to visit the grateful pair, Col. Paul Gascoyne and his ward Adrienne, at the colonel's laboratory, where he is introduced to Wintermute, a chemist who produces imitation diamonds. In return, Larry asks them to view his priceless diamond collection. Although he has fallen in love with Adrienne, Larry is forced to believe that she is a thief when he is robbed by a woman wearing Adrienne's scarf. Larry finds his jewels in Gascoyne's house, but before he can escape, a group of thugs overpowers him. Adrienne assists him in contacting the police, who arrive in time to capture Gascoyne and his gang. Badly wounded, the colonel confesses that Adrienne has been his innocent dupe, whereupon Larry happily takes her to his heart.
- Millionaire J. Warren Hobbs, Sr., sends his lively young son to New Mexico to buy back a mine he previously had thought worthless but since has discovered is rich in tungsten deposits. Lord Willoughby, the mine owner's twin brother, suggests to Hobbs's business rival, Rufus Renshaw, that he buy the mine, after which Willoughby, Renshaw and Renshaw's daughter Helen, the sweetheart of Hobbs, Jr., catch a westbound train. Angered when Helen scorns his advances, Lord Willoughby disguises himself as his brother and sells Renshaw the mine; meanwhile, Hobbs, Jr. purchases it from its real owner, Louis Willoughby. Soon after Renshaw discovers that Lord Willoughby tricked him, Hobbs, Jr. learns that the mine is worthless after all and sells it to Renshaw in return for the old man's permission to marry Helen. Having successfully tricked the whole party, Hobbs and his fiancée make a quick exit.
- Texas Ranger William Sykes, nicknamed "Captain Bonfire," leads a posse in pursuit of Mexican bandits who have hijacked a gold shipment. The lawmen arrive at the Moreno ranch, where the gang leader, known as "the Vulture," has taken refuge with his gang. After convincing the rancher and his pretty daughter Guadalupe, that the Americans are anti-Mexican marauders, the outlaws make their escape. Guadalupe intends to kill William, but she soon realizes her mistake and falls in love with him. She assists William in faking his own death and stages a mock burial, after which the ranger ambushes the Vulture and his men. As William leaves to join the Allied troops in France, he promises to return for Guadalupe.
- Ruth Rogens (Sylvia Breamer) is married to policeman John Rogens (Jack Mower), whose work causes him to neglect her. Her neighbor Adelaide Thomas (Gertrude Astor), the mistress of bootlegger Cyler Bryson (Bruce Gordon),invites her out on a party and loans her a gown. Before long, Cyler, the cad, is buying Ruth fancy clothes and forgets about Adelaide. The latter, in revenge, leads Cyler's wife Grace (Helene Sullivan), to believe that Ruth is her husband's mistress. John makes a raid on the bootlegger's warehouse and finds his wife in Cycler's company at a roadhouse.
