Doctors now tell him he has only a few months to live and advise him to go to Maine (where, evidently, it will seem longer.) He asks Joan to marry him, promising to leave her his fortune. She, no dummy, accepts but hard-loser Fred doesn't like it even though she says she is doing it for him. After six months of living in a lighthouse with only Joan and Sparrow, whom he has hired as his aide, Sinclaie seemingly regains his health and has really fallen in love with Joan. She tells him she can no longer tolerate the loneliness just as Fred arrives for a visit, and John invites him to stay. In a chess game, John facetiously outlines to Fred how he would murder him if he chose to. Fred, decides to beat him to the punch and enters his bedroom that night and attempts to kill John with a poker. The figure in the bed turns out to be a dummy and John, who has been hiding, clubs Fred to death. He tries to throw the body from the bedroom window but it won't open and, planning to return and force it open later, he carries the body to the rocks and then hits Fred's head with a stone. Returning to the lighthouse, John meets Sparrow and tells him that Fred fell from a window but Sparrow knows all the windows have been nailed shut. And Joan, who saw John carry the body out, has summoned the police.
- On a lecture/vacation visit to Paris, Dr. Ordway drops in on his friend, the Prefecture of Police. He becomes involved in a case involving the stabbing of an old man. Orday learns that Beachey was the town Romeo with many enemies and that most of those had access to the poison. Doc Millerson, who has a suspicion who the guilty party is, receives a note in a woman's handwriting requesting a meeting at the river bank. He goes there and is killed in an ambush by a rifle shot. Following the note as a clue, Ordway visits the house of Ezra Minnich and traps Minnich's young daughter into confessing that her father made her write the note. Minnich confesses he had killed Beachey for trying to break up his home and Doc Millerson because he suspected him.
- In the 7th of Columbia's "Whistler" series, truck-firm owner Steve Reynolds gets involved in a feud with a rival firm, and shortly thereafter is slugged by a masked assailant who steals the truck he is driving. The assailant runs down a policeman in the truck and leaves other clues pointing to Reynolds as the cop killer. With only a glove, with diamonds stuck in the thumb, as a clue, and while evading the police and other characters after him and the diamonds, Reynolds finally runs down the guilty party and clears himself.

The blackmailing seamen are killed at a waterfront café after getting the blackmail money, Rogers is suspected and Inspector Queen arrives to arrest him, but he is also found dead.

Finally an Indian woman, L-Ana, helps Bill, but he is unable to get the radio working. Jim and Ike fly over the jungle, but a storm prevents them from spotting the village, so they continue on to Rio Vista. The two men meet Joan and for her sake, Jim organizes a rescue expedition. Led by natives, the convoy finds a village holding a doctor captive. A fierce battle follows and the doctor is freed from his captors. Meanwhile, Bill, despondent over his predicament, has taken on the native's ways by marrying L-ana. Jim's expedition finally locates the tribe, but when he sees Bill's living arrangements, the two men argue. Bill is ready to thoughtlessly desert L-ana, but as he leaves the village, L-ana's brother kills him. After returning to Rio Vista, Jim tells Joan that he learned Bill had died in the crash, sacrificing himself to avoid landing in a field full of women and children, many of whom might have died.

Lewis shares an apartment with Bradley Miller (Ross Hunter) and Michele (Fritz Feld), an artist, and Miller has just invented a non-staining lipstick called "Rosebud." Preparing to get a booth at the show, Miller is told by J. Webster Hackett (Alan Mowbray), a very devious "Cosmetics King", intent on selling a big lipstick order to buyer Edgar Pomeroy (Thurston Hall), that it will cost him $1000 to join the association and get a booth, which is about $999 more than Miller and his room-mates have between them. But Miller's beauty parlor girlfriend, Janet Wilson (Ann Savage), meets factory-owner P. G. Grimble (Hugh Herbert), and money is soon no issue.
