- On 8th October 1941, Stalin issued a secret order forming a female aviation unit. Known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a unit like this had never existed before. Their operational record began at the Salsk Steppes and the Don battles and ended in Nazi Germany. Flying PO-2 night bombers or 'mules', these brave female pilots flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions, which successfully destroyed the enemy's river crossings, fortifications, machinery and manpower. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. The most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot had flown over 1000 missions by the end of the war with twenty-three pilots awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. Fighting with equal bravery and skill as their male counterparts earned them the name 'Nachthexen' (Night Witches) by the Germans.

- 1986, Afghanistan. The Mujahideen announce the launch of a new air-defense system called Stinger, which could potentially end Soviet supremacy in the air. Commander of Intelligence, Major Okovalkov is assigned the mission of getting hold of this new weapon and to do this, he has to intercept a small caravan transporting, according to intelligence information, a couple of Stingers. However, as it turns out, the caravan is a large heavily guarded vehicle with a well-armed escort. Realising that the mission is doomed to fail before it has begun, Okovalkov decides to let the caravan pass and then return to his unit, but his plans are ruined when a young and inexperienced soldier suddenly opens fire. A fight ensues during which most of the Soviet squad is killed. With only seven survivors and no radio contact, Okovalkov's real ordeal begins when he is forced to march his injured men over 45 kilometres back to base.
- Joe Sokoloff, a sergeant with the Canadian police, travels to the remote country to carry out his beloved grandmother's last wishes, but all his plans fail almost immediately on arriving in his historic homeland, when he is robbed while traveling on the train. Ready to embrace his traveling experience, he misses his train and finds himself in a small village region. He is turned into Stanley Liber, a marine cadet who had gone missing but who somehow has miraculously survived. Furthermore Ivan is to marry Sheila, Liber's fiancee. The couple soon become close, Sheila begins to share all her problems with Ivan and even decides to leave for Nevada with him. Gradually Ivan begins to forget his own fiancée Lika, who stayed behind in the Soviet Union. No-one knew whether she survived the Siege of Leningrad. But Ivan's life is unpredictable. First Sheila, and later Ivan, are arrested and deported back to the Soviet Union where Ivan will have to endure immense suffering before he can begin his search for those near to him and piece his life back together.
- The life of Irina, owner of the Traveller's Rest motel, changes dramatically after Susanna, her former classmate and rival, returns to Ukraine. Susanna buys a nearby motel that Irina had really wanted to buy herself. Irina's husband Tolik was in love with Susanna when they were at school, so Irina begins to fear that these feelings may revive. However, Makarov is an incorrigible cynic and misanthropist, so his relationships with his colleagues are consistently tense. In addition, he has a skeleton in the closet - the reason for his return to the police after an enforced resignation is the death of his sister whom he loved dearly. Her death was recorded as resulting from an ordinary robbery, a crime which had never been disclosed, but Makarov is sure this was a premeditated murder. This time he is determined to find his sister's killer.
- A divorced Professor of gynaecology leads a quiet life preferring his work and his own company to other people. However, his solitude comes to an abrupt end when a neighbour knocks on his door one day asking for help. A young girl in his office is pregnant. Alone and confused, Anna feels that an abortion is her only option, but her doctor has advised her that, if she goes ahead with the operation, it is unlikely she will be able to have children. The Professor reluctantly agrees to examine her, but when he confirms his colleague's diagnosis, Anna is distraught.
- During the peak of socialism in the 1980s, 27-year old Kostik Voloshyn dreams of escaping abroad. Not willing to "build the socialist society", Kostik lives a double life; his job as a scientist at a research institute is merely a front for his card game hustling at which he is an expert. However, when Kostik wins a large sum from under the nose of Goga, a tough card player, he returns to Odessa to avoid reprisals. Hoping to 'earn' enough money to leave the Soviet Union for good, Kostik successfully swindles all his opponents with the help of his uncle, 45-year old Balaban, a leading gangster in Odessa. Kostik is unaware that it was Balaban who committed a serious crime twenty years ago for which his brother, Kostik's father, was arrested. Balaban helped Kostik's father to escape over the border, but the latter had no other choice but to leave his wife and little son to their fate in the USSR. And now Balaban intends to make Odessa too hot for Kostik because he doesn't wish to share with him Maya, the woman he loves, who is developing a whirling romance with Kostik. Kostik's uncle pulls the plug on Kostik by forbidding him cardsharping in Odessa. Nevertheless, Kostik does not stop because he badly needs money and fake passports to leave the country with his mother for abroad where their divided family might reunite.
- Platoon commander Lt. Kravtsov reports for active duty. Military 'fate' allocates for such lieutenants only three days of life, on average. This extraordinary film may sound like a piece of science fiction, but it is a story that happened near a small village in the Chernobyl area soon after the devastating explosion of the nuclear power plant. A police officer finds a strange creature in a house inhabited by a crazy old woman. He takes it home and, despite his wife's objections, puts it into the refrigerator. According to the rules, he reports the case to his superiors and arranges for the creature to be examined. This is only the beginning of the story, however - soon afterwards his wife leaves him, the old woman dies under mysterious circumstances, a ufologist comes to the village to investigate, and to crown it all, the officer is haunted by apparitions. Enigmatic and inexplicable things in our lives - are we ready and able to face them? If so, do we 'need' extraterrestrials?

- Kirill Makarov has just graduated from university with a degree in architecture. When he wakes up the following morning, Kirill finds himself in a luxurious mansion. He is now the owner of a large and successful architectural firm and married to Victoria, he is a man of means and influence. Kirill is happy. His life is full of pleasure, and it appears that his dreams and ambitions have at last been realised. But will he want to return to his previous life, and will he be able to cope when faced with disappointment and unfulfilled ambition once more?
