- Hayle promised Grace the day -- but she's forgotten. A reluctant passenger on the drive to a sprawling rural auto graveyard in Hayle's precious 1963 Lincoln, Grace is intent on pressing for a reaction to something she'd let slip, last night and just before leaving abruptly. Exchanging taut banter, they forage through rusted hulks of steel and chrome, looking for a grille for Hayle's wounded '63. Grace self-amuses with an improvised dance among the relics, is cautioned against the frivolity by Hayle, and discovers a golden hood ornament: a voluptuous, preening female. The find leads to the sought-after salvaged grille, and Grace insists on shouldering the glistening 40-pound diecast metal burden. Spotting a wrecked Corvette that surely brought the death of its occupants, the mood changes and Grace accidentally professes her love. Dodging the exposure, their tension turns to playfulness. Grace's forearm scars are inadvertently revealed, and the reminder pushes both into having The Talk -- about Grace's previous attempt at self-ending. The resolution is uncertain, and the couple begins fighting over Hayle's forgotten promise for the day. Grace, exasperated and believing Hayle is probably not a fit companion for her, says she doesn't understand cars and thinks they're "horrible devices." In frustrated response, Hayle blows up, saying that Grace "takes her skin" every time she leaves her without warning. It seems an impasse and an end, but Grace instead embraces Hayle, as a sinking ship's survivor would cling to a piece of floating wreckage. They leave the car yard without the grille, but carrying instead the golden female hood ornament -- and a sense of promise for a negotiated future.
