- DirectorHoward HawksStarsKatharine HepburnCary GrantCharles RugglesWhile trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby. The most perfectly made comedy I've ever seen! The jokes are not only hilarious, but every joke builds the story and sets up the next joke. It's like a domino effect. You can laugh at the same joke in terms of what the joke is, how it's performed, what the characters say, the tone they used to deliver the lines, how it affects the next scene, etc. It's a comedy on a level of dialogue, slapstick, situational comedy, mistaken identity comedy, screwball comedy, etc. Not only the funniest movie I've seen, but one of my favorite movies in general.
- DirectorJay LeveyStars'Weird Al' YankovicVictoria JacksonKevin McCarthyAn unemployed visionary becomes the manager of a local television station. The station becomes a success, with all sorts of hilarious sight gags and wacky humor. It might not be the best comedy artistically, but the screenplay is hysterical! In his only leading role, Weird Al Yankovic plays loser George Newman who is constantly fired from job to job because he daydreams he's in movies and television. Soon, his Uncle wins a contract at a poker game for a failed channel called U62 that seems destined for failure. He offers George the opportunity to run it and while it's still a failure at first, the success of Stanley Spadowski's Clubhousee and other shows make it a winner. Filled with hilarious spoofs and slapstick, one-liners and background gags like Airplane, UHF is one of my favorite comedies.
- DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLeslie NielsenAfter the crew becomes sick with food poisoning, a neurotic ex-fighter pilot must safely land a commercial airplane full of passengers. No matter how many times you see it, there's always a few jokes that you didn't catch. So well organized, even though a lot of the jokes don't have anything to do with the plot. It's probably the most quotable comedy! It's ashame they done make such creative and free spirited comedies like this anymore. I'll admit some of the jokes are self contained, but most of the story centers on various passengers who have known each other for sometime and a pilot who has food poisoning because of fish where the passengers are in danger unless ex-pilot Ted Striker can take control. This is the only time Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Bridges make a spoof together (even though they don't share any scenes).
- DirectorLeo McCareyStarsGroucho MarxHarpo MarxChico MarxRufus T. Firefly is named the dictator of bankrupt Freedonia and declares war on neighboring Sylvania over the love of his wealthy backer Mrs. Teasdale, contending with two inept spies who can't seem to keep straight which side they're on.A nearly perfect comedy! Definitely the Marx Bros at the top of their game! This movie got me into the Marx Bros. The story is quite simple: Fictional country Freedonia is in need of a leader. Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) is chosen with no experience as a leader and declares war on rival country Slovania for no reason. The spies in Slovania (Harpo and Chico) switch sides for no reason other than their relatable behavior with Rufus and soon no one is safe. The famous gags include the trick "mirror" sequence, the hot dog stand, Rufus arriving without knowing he's expected, the sidecar from Harpo, Harpo's tattoos, etc. Just see it!
- DirectorRon UnderwoodStarsBilly CrystalJack PalanceDaniel SternOn the verge of turning 40, an unhappy Manhattan yuppie is roped into joining his two friends on a cattle drive in the southwest.Mitch, Phil and Ed are longtime best friends that often go on vacations together. Mitch's birthday is coming up and he feels bored with his life. As a present, he receives a brochure from his two best friends for a couple weeks on a live cattle drive--roping and riding cows and horses with a stiff faced trail boss. Soon, they become in touch with reality, danger and joy. Though it's sometimes more heartfelt than my other choices, the comedy is still terrific. Many classic scenes and characters that feel like ones you know or maybe are similar to yourself. A truly funny and touching feel good movie.
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsGene WilderMadeline KahnMarty FeldmanAn American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body. Not only is this my choice for Brooks' best movie, it's also one of the best comedies I've ever seen. There are only a couple minor bits that don't quite age, but most are just as hilarious as in 1974. Even more well aged than Blazing Saddles (does anyone understand the joke, "Baby, please, I am not from Havannah.") this is not only hilarious, but artistically made in it's wonderful attention to detail of the castle and laboratory equipment. With such classic characters like Eye-Gore, Frau Blucher, Inspector Kemp and, of course, Dr. Fronkensteen, Young Frankenstein is still hilarious in repeated viewings. This actually got me into Mel Brooks comedies.
- DirectorCharles ChaplinStarsCharles ChaplinMack SwainTom MurrayA prospector goes to the Klondike during the 1890s gold rush in hopes of making his fortune, and is smitten with a girl he sees in a dance hall. This is my choice for the best silent comedy! It is surprising that Chaplin would re-edit this in the 40s with voice over narration and removal or the intertitles and terrific ending. I keep alternating on my favorite Chaplin since Modern Times and City Lights are classics, too, but this seems like a win-win since it's stylistically groundbreaking, hilarious and with heart. The other two have that as well, but the jokes here are more relevant to the story and it ends with everything going Chaplin's way with friendship, romance and, of course, gold.
- DirectorHerbert RossStarsWalter MatthauGeorge BurnsRichard BenjaminA vaudeville duo agree to reunite for a television special, but it turns out that they can't stand each other. So hard to dislike! A sort of earlier, gentler version of Grumpy Old Men with Walter Matthau (of course) and this time George Burns. I wish these two would have made another movie again because their timing is impeccable and I think this is Neil Simon at this most hysterical. I also consider it Neil Simon's best, Matthau's best and Burns' best. The chemistry between Walter and George is so hilarious because the characters are both the same for being forgetful old men who get annoyed at each other over small things while being opposites in tone. Walter is extroverted with lots of energy while George is introverted creating laughs more subtly for being so laid back. Richard Benjamin as the agent/nephew of Matthau is also hilarious trying to find sanity in these two. Especially his Uncle.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsZach GalifianakisBradley CooperJustin BarthaThree buddies wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas, with no memory of the previous night and the bachelor missing. They make their way around the city in order to find their friend before his wedding. The funniest movie of the decade and sure to be a timeless classic! Four friends are taking their last time as a quartet to extremes when one of them has a bachelor party before the wedding. They're in Las Vegas, but after a few drinks one night, they wake up in shambles as three of them are confused, hungover...and lost the groom! The jokes tell the story wonderfully as the hilarity adds to what happened that night. Sort of a cross between City Slickers in terms of bonding with Judd Apatow in terms of craziness. This movie catapulted actors Bradley Cooper, Zach Galafinakis and Ed Helms into stardom and deservedly so.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonGeorges AdetIn czarist Russia, a neurotic soldier and his distant cousin formulate a plot to assassinate Napoleon.I have always been a fan of Woody Allen. He has great sense of comic timing and his jokes are literal, fast, creative and most importantly timeless. My choice for his best joke after joke comedy is Love and Death. Part of it's appeal is that it takes places in revolutionary times, which makes it ageless already. Also, it deals with the two biggest subjects in life: Love and Death. Done as a spoof of the time it's set, the movie has the feel of Mel Brooks, but the timing of Woody Allen. I wouldn't call this his absolute best movie, but I will say it's his best comedy.
