- DirectorMel GibsonStarsMel GibsonSophie MarceauPatrick McGoohanScottish warrior William Wallace leads his countrymen in a rebellion to free his homeland from the tyranny of King Edward I of England. The greatest action movie I've ever seen! All the action you can ask for with a running time of three hours! It has the coolest action scenes I've ever seen! It all plays like it's really happening and the story is powerful about this one person who made a difference to get a country of his own. It's all the more incredible because there's no use of CGI during the battle scenes. It's all natural and as real as possible with wonderful use of jump cuts for startling effect. This is all the more amazing because Mel Gibson is not only the star, but the director and the movie seems like it's in the hands of a professional film maker, like the work of Akira Kurosawa in his samurai days. One of my top ten favorite movies!
- DirectorJames CameronStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerLinda HamiltonEdward FurlongA cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten year old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg.Better than the first Terminator. The action scenes are on par, but the visual effects are obviously superior and so is the makeup. Technically, this is a perfectly made movie on every aspect of film making. It's script is strong, but not perfect like the original. The timeline is confused as to what year the present scenes take place (1994 or 1995?) and there are few questions about the story that aren't answered, but other than that, flawless movie making.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers. No list of action movies is complete without Indiana Jones! One of Steven Spielberg's greatest movies in his career, the first of five Indiana Jones movies has many classic scenes and edge of your seat moments that remain thrilling in every viewing. Though, I'll admit that not every scene holds up, it's hard to not have fun watching this movie. Here, Indy is trying to find the Ark of the Convenant and runs into an old flame of his named Marian because he needs a piece from a artifact her father took from him. Nazis are on their tail trying to rid of them and the Ark which contains a spellbinding sequence of secrets when the two leads are tied to a poll in my favorite part of the movie!
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKate CapshawKe Huy QuanIn 1935, Indiana Jones is tasked by Indian villagers with reclaiming a rock stolen from them by a secret cult beneath the catacombs of an ancient palace.Tied with Raiders, Temple of Doom is just as daring, dangerous, violent, funny, but most importantly exciting as Raiders of the Lost Ark. Some overlook this one, but I think it holds up very well over time with action scenes that still feel new today and enjoyable supporting characters like Short Round and Willie Scott. Indy is in India unintentionally because of a plane crash, which leads him and his two partners to a temple filled with children as slaves run by an evil, bald man who looks like a character in Street Fighter II. Indy is also there to bring back the stones, which are ancient and important in the Indian heritage. Many death defying traps, voodoo, spells and being burned alive from flames down below with hearts ripped out stand in their way.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett. This is my choice for the best of the Star Wars movies! It has exciting action scenes, wonderful production design and visuals, plus the most powerful story of the series (though Episode 4comes close). Not only does it feature the introduction of the diminutive master Yoda, but tells the audience one of the best twist endings of all time relating to Luke and Vader! There are also many patterns symbolizing this as the middle in the trilogy. Darth Vader's spaceship doesn't open this movie because that bookend 4 and 6. Same with the ending taking place in a spaceship with the characters backs turned to the audience instead of in face front on a planet like the even numbered ones. The lightsaber duel is a stalemate. Luke first appears leaving a cave and entering daylight wearing grey clothes which all symbolize this being the middle in location and color of clothing. Leia isn't held captive in this either and Han Solo is captured at the same time that Leis would be rescued in Episode 4.
- DirectorAndrew DavisStarsHarrison FordTommy Lee JonesSela WardDr. Richard Kimble, unjustly accused of murdering his wife, must find the real killer while being the target of a nationwide manhunt led by a seasoned U.S. Marshal.I have always loved this movie because of its performances and classic story. The action scenes are just as timeless. From the jump off a bus before the train crashes to the plunge from the sewer drain to the lake plus the red lights flickering back and forth while Richard Kimble attacks the one armed man in a subway through its conclusion where Richard discovers that more than one man is in on the murder of his wife, there's plenty to see. This includes the speech Deputy Gerard gives while Richard is running through the forest and the flashbacks of his wife's death. There are many other exciting moments.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world.Though not based on an actual superhero series, The Incredibles is a fascinating, action packed, animated movie from Disney that features all the elements of a superhero movie in a unique way. For starters, the lead villain is ingenious: A #1 fan of the main character, Bob Parr, turned criminal mastermind! The relation with Bob and his family members are honest and quite hilarious at times. It's action scenes feel like a bunch of spectacular conclusions of other action movies one after the other without seeming predictable or unnecessary. In fact, the action advances the story rather than replaces it. Though Finding Nemo is still my favorite Pixar cartoon, this is my second favorite and is worth of being considered an action movie just as much as it's considered a Disney classic!
- DirectorRobert ClouseStarsBruce LeeJohn SaxonJim KellyA Shaolin martial artist travels to an island fortress to spy on an opium lord - who is also a former monk from his temple - under the guise of attending a fighting tournament. This was Bruce Lee's last movie before his untimely death. It couldn't have ended with a better movie in his career, although I wouldn't know what the future would have given him. Enter The Dragon is a fierce, exciting adventure where Lee goes undercover as an agent in the island of Han. This is the one with the hall of mirrors sequence which is still timeless and wonderfully filmed to this day.
- DirectorEdward ZwickStarsMatthew BroderickDenzel WashingtonCary ElwesRobert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War's first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates.A powerful and meaningful story about the segregation of African American soldiers fighting the Civil War alongside Caucasian soldiers seen through the eyes of Col. Robert Shaw. The action scenes are very realistic and powerful and so are the performances. It really surprises me that this war movie wasn't nominated Best Picture (although Morgan Freeman's other movie and Best Picture Winner Driving Miss Daisy is still a terrific movie), with strong accuracy in costumes, set design, props, choreography, etc.
- DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.Hacksaw Ridge is the best war movie since American Sniper and one of the greatest war movies I've ever seen! Probably the best I've seen this year. A true definition of greatness with strong style (the war footage) and involving story. This is of course the most recent of my favorite action movies. Also directed by Mel Gibson, but not featuring him, Hacksaw Ridge is as brutal and powerful in WWII as Braveheart was in it's depicting of Scotland being a country of it's own. With many powerful death scenes and attention to detail in it's recreation of the 40's as well as various makeups and stunt coordination through it's many battle scenes, Hacksaw Ridge is a powerful, haunting war movie that shows the tragedy and danger of war, but also hope in an unlikely hero who is a medic on the battlefield and also savior without firing a single shot!
