The second great Sterling Hayden performance in a Kubrick film takes a back seat to Peter Sellers' triple tour de force. Although it would be nearly impossible to stage this as a play, all three plot lines are pieces with a unity of place and of course a unity of time: 1. the war room, 2. the damaged B- 52 and 3. Jack Ripper's quarters. Too many great quotes to begin now, but let me just say, "We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when, but we'll meet again some sunny day."

I saw the movie in the month of May and was perfectly ready to see snow covering the ground when I exited the theater. One of the tests of whether a movie has truly drawn me in. Scatman Crothers relationship with Danny and Shelley Duvall truly related to her son are the elements of goodness versus Jack Nicholson's mad evil. "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy". Anyone who ever suffered from substance abuse and attempting sobriety, plus any writer who ever suffered from writer's block, can truly identify.
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

In 1968 this movie was slow, by today's standards this movie is exceedingly slow, but still it was a breakthrough film. The star of the film was HAL especially during the death scene, when Duryea is busy unscrewing his memory and HAL is recounting his earliest memories, a performance of his ability for its preening parents. The final moments of psychedelic loneliness and existential angst are a little overboard even when stoned, but the monkeys at the film's start make up for it.

Sterling Hayden has more than one great movie to his name, but this film particularly his despair when the wind blows the gold back into the hills, must be seen. Elisha Cook Junior in his best role other than the Bogart films.
