Top 20 Most Anticipated of 2011

by raysubers | created - 08 Dec 2010 | updated - 10 Aug 2011 | Public

While it's interesting to spend some time analyzing the past year in movies, it's more fun to look ahead at what 2011 has in store. It's likely that half of my selections for "Most Anticipated of 2011" will turn out to be anywhere from mediocre to awful, but I can guarantee with relative certainty that at least a few of the below movies will be well worth the price of admission. - Ray Subers (Box Office Mojo)

1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

R | 158 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

71 Metascore

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 494,617 | Gross: $102.52M

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is easily the biggest literary sensation since The Da Vinci Code (and it's actually pretty good, too). Add in David Fincher and Daniel Craig, and it's hard to imagine this being anything but great. Dec. 22

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

45 Metascore

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Director: Rob Marshall | Stars: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Votes: 563,779 | Gross: $241.06M

The last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies were mediocre, to say the least. For On Stranger Tides, they are going with a smaller budget (more akin to the first Pirates), a new director (Chicago's Rob Marshall) and all new characters, save Johnny Depp's Captain Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa. Hopefully these changes will make On Stranger Tides a highlight of 2011. May 20

3. Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

A spaceship arrives in 1873 Arizona to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. All that stands in their way: a posse of cowboys and natives.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Abigail Spencer

Votes: 232,396 | Gross: $100.24M

I had little interest Cowboys & Aliens until I was blown away by the teaser trailer a few weeks ago. Jon Favreau looks like he's on to something big here, and in a summer stuffed full of sequels and superheroes, a genre-bending movie like this might be just what we need. July 29

4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

73 Metascore

The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name.

Director: Brad Bird | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton

Votes: 528,227 | Gross: $209.40M

It's in vogue to bash the Mission: Impossible franchise, but I find they are consistently entertaining at a minimum. Add director Brad Bird (Ratatouille! The Incredibles!) and new IMF team members Jeremy Renner and Josh Holloway, and this is definitely a must-see (despite it's terrible name). Dec. 16

5. The Hangover Part II (2011)

R | 102 min | Comedy

44 Metascore

Two years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu's wedding. Stu's plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.

Director: Todd Phillips | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha

Votes: 534,292 | Gross: $254.46M

The Hangover is, by most accounts, one of the funniest movies of the past few years. It's also one of the most successful financially, so there was naturally an urge to fast-track a sequel. For The Hangover Part II, I hope they are able to keep enough of what made the first one work, while at the same time mixing things up enough to make the sequel worthwhile. May 27

6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

PG-13 | 130 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

85 Metascore

Harry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon

Votes: 947,679 | Gross: $381.01M

I didn't love Deathly Hallows Part 1, but, being familiar with the source material, I'm assuming Part 2 will be much more entertaining. Here's hoping that one of the most successful franchises of all-time ends in the epic, incredible way it ought to. July 15

7. Green Lantern (2011)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

39 Metascore

Reckless test pilot Hal Jordan is granted an alien ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers that inducts him into an intergalactic police force, the Green Lantern Corps.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong

Votes: 296,047 | Gross: $116.60M

The first trailer for Green Lantern wasn't that impressive, in my opinion. However, I have faith in Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale), and I think Ryan Reynolds has loads of potential in this role. June 17

8. Super 8 (2011)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

During the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Elle Fanning, AJ Michalka, Kyle Chandler, Joel Courtney

Votes: 367,413 | Gross: $127.00M

Almost nothing is known about the latest J.J. Abrams project. But that makes it more fun, doesn't it? Hopefully this is more like Lost Season One and Star Trek and less like Cloverfield. June 10

9. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Steve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.

Director: Joe Johnston | Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell

Votes: 896,378 | Gross: $176.65M

With no trailer available, it's hard to tell what to expect from Captain America: The First Avenger. We do know, at least, that it's an origin story set during World War II, it stars the charismatic Chris Evans, and it's part of Marvel's Avengers series. This is really all I need to get excited about Captain America. July 22

10. Hugo (2011)

PG | 126 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

83 Metascore

In 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Lee, Ben Kingsley

Votes: 336,734 | Gross: $73.86M

Hugo Cabret features a handful of firsts for director Martin Scorsese: it's his first movie geared towards children/families, his first in 3-D, and his first without Leonardo DiCaprio in over ten years. While I obviously wish he would make more movies like Goodfellas and The Departed, this will have to do for now. Dec. 9

11. Thor (2011)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Fantasy

57 Metascore

The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston

Votes: 899,761 | Gross: $181.03M

There's really been no indication yet that Thor is going to be any good. But it should at least be interesting, thanks to director Kenneth Branaugh and an exciting cast including Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. May 4

12. Horrible Bosses (2011)

R | 98 min | Comedy, Crime

57 Metascore

Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness.

Director: Seth Gordon | Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Steve Wiebe

Votes: 469,573 | Gross: $117.54M

I have a feeling that Horrible Bosses is Summer 2011's Wedding Crashers or The Hangover. It's got the up-and-coming cast (Charlie Day!) along with a darkly comic premise (enraged employees set out to kill their boss). Throw in Jamie Foxx's brilliantly named character (check out the IMDb page) and seven months out this looks like a winner. July 29

13. Battle Los Angeles (2011)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

37 Metascore

A squad of U.S. Marines becomes the last line of defense against a global invasion.

Director: Jonathan Liebesman | Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ramón Rodríguez

Votes: 185,137 | Gross: $83.55M

I'm expecting Battle: Los Angeles to be what Skyline wasn't -- an intense look at what would happen if aliens invaded West LA. Also, it's tough to go wrong with Aaron Eckhart. March 11

14. Moneyball (2011)

PG-13 | 133 min | Biography, Drama, Sport

87 Metascore

Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players.

Director: Bennett Miller | Stars: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 464,261 | Gross: $75.61M

It's really unfortunate that there aren't more baseball movies made (the Hollywood logic is that if a movie can't sell overseas, then it isn't worth making at all); Moneyball is the first major non-comedy baseball offering since 2002's The Rookie. With Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Capote director Bennett Miller, this is definitely a movie to keep an eye on. Sept. 23

15. X: First Class (2011)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon

Votes: 723,312 | Gross: $146.41M

I'm a big fan of X2: X-Men United and, to a lesser extent, the first X-Men. Add in Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn, who flexed his comic-book muscles this year with Kick-Ass, along with a completely new cast and period setting, and this should hopefully be worthwhile. June 3

16. Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

PG | 90 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

67 Metascore

Po and his friends fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon, but first the Dragon Warrior must come to terms with his past.

Director: Jennifer Yuh Nelson | Stars: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman

Votes: 320,292 | Gross: $165.25M

The first Kung Fu Panda is easily one of DreamWorks Animation's best movies ever, and there clearly seems to be enough material here for at least one strong sequel (but maybe not five, which is what DreamWorks currently has planned). May 27

17. We Bought a Zoo (2011)

PG | 124 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

58 Metascore

Set in Southern California, a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.

Director: Cameron Crowe | Stars: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Elle Fanning

Votes: 151,674 | Gross: $75.62M

Cameron Crowe is finally back to work with We Bought a Zoo, which should hopefully be more like Almost Famous or Jerry Maguire and less like his last disaster, Elizabethtown. Dec. 23

18. 30 Minutes or Less (2011)

R | 83 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

49 Metascore

Two fledgling criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else...

Director: Ruben Fleischer | Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, Aziz Ansari

Votes: 106,603 | Gross: $37.05M

30 Minutes or Less is an action comedy from Ruben Fleisher, director of Zombieland, and it stars Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride. What more do you need to know? Aug. 12

19. Rango (2011)

PG | 107 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

75 Metascore

Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant, Abigail Breslin

Votes: 292,854 | Gross: $123.48M

The first trailer makes Rango look like a completely original, genre-bending animated movie, which is something we can't expect from Pixar or DreamWorks this year. March 4

20. Paul (2011)

R | 104 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

Two English comic book geeks traveling across the U.S. encounter an alien outside Area 51.

Director: Greg Mottola | Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Mia Stallard

Votes: 265,997 | Gross: $37.41M

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are great together in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Here's hoping that they can maintain that chemistry even without the involvement of director Edgar Wright. March 18

21. 50/50 (2011)

R | 100 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

72 Metascore

Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

Director: Jonathan Levine | Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard

Votes: 342,836 | Gross: $35.01M
