The Essential Fassbinder
When two people are in love (or so Fassbinder believed) one always loves the other a little more, or less. The power dynamic inherent in being in love is inevitably painful - one always has the upper hand, and often uses it to his or her advantage; hence, "Each man kills the thing he loves". Not only is this true between two people in love, but also the love shared between self and society, or with an established institution; humanity is dependent on the establishment, but the establishment is never dependent on a single individual. Again, much pain ensues. Throw in xenophobia and you have enough material to fuel the narratives of not just one filmmaker, but every filmmaker alive, or dead. However, no one did it better than RWF: 40 feature length films; two television film series; three short films; four video productions; twenty-four stage plays and four radio plays --- in 13 years. You can't convince me that Jesus Christ died so we can all live in a better world, but if you said Fassbinder did, I'd buy it.
