1. Leverage (2008–2012)

TV-PG | 42 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

A crew of high-tech crooks attempt to steal from wealthy criminals and corrupt businessmen.

Stars: Timothy Hutton, Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf

Votes: 54,170

Action/suspense/thriller. Take "Ocean's 11" mix that with "Robin Hood" and you get "Leverage." This show is intelligent, action packed, funny, exciting, and yet holds itself back from becoming a stereotype of any one genre. Well worth the investment of your time.

2. The Mentalist (2008–2015)

TV-14 | 43 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

A famous "psychic" outs himself as a fake, and starts working as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation so he can find "Red John", the madman who killed his wife and daughter.

Stars: Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, Tim Kang, Owain Yeoman

Votes: 200,280

Murder/mystery. Smart and witty "The Mentalist" plays out like many other good detective shows, namely Monk, Columbo, Psych (it borrows from these three without becoming a clone). However, there is a dark side to this show as the shows hero (The Mentalist of the shows title) is hunting down a serial killer called Red John who killed his wife and son and who unfortunately is always one step ahead of him.

3. Psych (2006–2014)

TV-PG | 44 min | Comedy, Crime, Mystery

When a novice sleuth convinces the police he has psychic powers, he and his reluctant best friend are hired on as consultants to help solve complicated cases.

Stars: James Roday Rodriguez, Dulé Hill, Timothy Omundson, Corbin Bernsen

Votes: 105,613

Murder/mystery/comedy. Funnier than most sit-com's, this show mixes the tried and tested detective formula with liberal helpings of laugh out loud humor. If you like stupid college and slapstick humor with loads of 1980's references thrown in for good measure you'll love "Psych."

4. Doctor Who (2005–2022)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor and his companions from planet Earth.

Stars: Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Smith

Votes: 246,234

Sci-fi. Cheesy, cheap, and cheerful, this remake of the original "Doctor Who" is the best of British. It's a shame David Tennant moved on after season 4 as he was for me the best Doctor ever! Oh well, from what I've seen and heard the new guy is pretty good. Lots of great sci-fi story lines and therein lies this shows strength.

5. Monk (2002–2009)

TV-PG | 44 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

The series follows Adrian Monk, a brilliant former San Francisco detective, who now consults the police as a private consultant whilst battling with an obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Stars: Tony Shalhoub, Jason Gray-Stanford, Ted Levine, Traylor Howard

Votes: 87,681

Murder/mystery. One of the best detective shows of all time... one par with the best that "Columbo" had to offer. At times Mr Monk could be just plain annoying, but that was the point. A detective show with a difference, the main character Mr Monk has OCD. This makes for an enjoyable and quirky detective show.

6. Eureka (2006–2012)

TV-14 | 60 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

A U.S. Marshal becomes the sheriff of Eureka, a remote, cozy little Northwestern town where the best minds in the US have secretly been tucked away to build futuristic inventions for the government which often go disastrously wrong.

Stars: Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston

Votes: 58,198

Sci-fi. Off the wall hit about a town of geniuses and the ordinary sheriff who always saved the day when disaster looms... which is in every episode. Funny and well thought out sci-fi for the discerning fan of this genre.

7. The Pretender (1996–2000)

TV-14 | 60 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

A specially gifted man, with the ability to instantly master any skill, escapes from a secret testing facility and travels the country taking on different jobs and helping strangers while hiding from his kidnappers.

Stars: Michael T. Weiss, Andrea Parker, Patrick Bauchau, Jon Gries

Votes: 17,074

Action/thriller/sci-fi. One my favorite shows "The Pretender" was a clever mix of action, thriller, and sci-fi. Earlier episodes are reminiscent of "Quantum Leap" "Early Edition" and the like, in that the shows hero sets about helping those in need. However, the shows back story take more a center stage in later seasons and that's when it comes into it's own.

8. Chuck (2007–2012)

TV-14 | 43 min | Action, Comedy, Drama

When a computer geek inadvertently downloads critical government secrets into his brain, both the CIA and the NSA assign an agent to protect him and exploit his newfound skills.

Stars: Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Joshua Gomez, Vik Sahay

Votes: 146,709

Action/comedy/sci-fi. Awesome! That's the one word I would use to describe this show. Right from the start I knew this show was going to be something special. If you looking for a good show, one that will keep you entertained with no filler episodes, then check out "Chuck." Awesome!!!

9. Castle (2009–2016)

TV-14 | 43 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

When a psychopath commits murders based on novelist Castle's books, Detective Beckett seeks his help to solve the case. He decides to work with her and uses his experiences as research for his novels.

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Jon Huertas

Votes: 174,221

Murder/mystery. Nathan Fillion ("Firefly" see below) is back on the small screen in yet another amazing show. He may have given up his space cowboy outfit for a tailored suit, but Fillion's wicked sense and boyish charm of humor continue to shine through.

10. Firefly (2002–2003)

TV-14 | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin

Votes: 281,437

Sci-fi/western. One season!?! Seriously, what was Fox thinking. I wasn't too sure of a space cowboy adventure but by the end of the series I was hooked. Nathan Fillion starts as the shows hero who is reminiscent of a certain Mr Han Solo, but with a wicked sense of humor. Throw in the fact that Adam Baldwin ("Chuck") plays his usual grunting self and you have a winning combo. Cancelled way too soon "Firefly" was followed up by the brilliant movie "Serenity" in 2005.

11. Merlin (2008–2012)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

These are the brand new adventures of Merlin, the legendary sorcerer as a young man, when he was just a servant to young Prince Arthur on the royal court of Camelot, who has soon become his best friend, and turned Arthur into a great king and a legend.

Stars: John Hurt, Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Richard Wilson

Votes: 87,167

Fantasy. Set in the days of ancient lore, "Merlin" is like the "Smallville" of the ancient world. For a BBC produced show the FX are very good, but as with anything produced by the 'Beeb' the writing is this shows strength.

12. Human Target (2010–2011)

TV-14 | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

A unique bodyguard protects his clients by secretly infiltrating their lives in order to draw out and eliminate threats.

Stars: Mark Valley, Chi McBride, Jackie Earle Haley, Indira Varma

Votes: 18,770

Action/adventure. If James Bond and Jason Bourne had a love child then you would get Christopher Chance, the hero of this show. Lots of action, there is a fight in every episode, this show rocks. Some of the episodes are a little weak, but hey what show doesn't have weak ep's?

13. Frasier (1993–2004)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

Dr. Frasier Crane moves back to his hometown of Seattle, where he lives with his father and works as a radio psychiatrist.

Stars: Kelsey Grammer, Jane Leeves, David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin

Votes: 95,329

Comedy. Still one of the best sit-com's ever! Funny, sarcastic, witty, and even slapstick humor is on offer here, but it's the deep loving relationship's that hold this show together and make it one of the most poignant shows to ever air.

14. The Dead Zone (2002–2007)

TV-14 | 60 min | Drama, Fantasy, Mystery

Johnny had the perfect life until he was in coma for six years. When he awoke, he found his fiancee married to another man. His son doesn't know him. Everything's changed, including Johnny. With one touch, he can see things.

Stars: Anthony Michael Hall, Nicole de Boer, Chris Bruno, John L. Adams

Votes: 9,973

Sci-fi/thriller. Based on the novel of the same title by Stephen King I hated the 1983, movie but loved this show. Sure it's a little cheesy in places and there are some episodes that were extremely weak, but at the end of the day the show works. Dark and foreboding, yet hopeful, this show lasted six seasons.

15. The 4400 (2004–2007)

TV-14 | 43 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

As the reappearance of 4,400 missing persons on a single day confounds the global community, federal agents on the case slowly discover the ways in which the victims have been changed.

Stars: Jacqueline McKenzie, Joel Gretsch, Patrick John Flueger, Conchita Campbell

Votes: 46,857

Sci-fi. This show was amazing. The premise was very simple, yet brilliant - 4400 people who were abducted by "aliens" are returned to earth, each with a special power. The show lasted 4 seasons and to be honest could have gone on for at least a couple more.

16. Doc Martin (2004–2022)

TV-14 | 46 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

The trials and tribulations of Martin Ellingham, a brilliant but socially challenged doctor who moves from London to the picturesque village of Port Wenn in Cornwall.

Stars: Martin Clunes, Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice, Joe Absolom

Votes: 20,169

Drama/comedy. I love this quirky little show from Britain. It's about a big city doctor who goes to live and work in a small seaside town; the quirkiness comes from the fact that he suffers from hemophilia (fear of blood). As a Brit I totally got this show, but I know some of my friends here in North America didn't get it at all.

17. Eli Stone (2008–2009)

TV-PG | 60 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

San Francisco lawyer Eli Stone begins to see things, which leads him to discover a brain aneurysm. But his visions lead him to accept cases with little monetary gain but a lot of moral goodness.

Stars: Jonny Lee Miller, Natasha Henstridge, Loretta Devine, Matt Letscher

Votes: 10,896

Legal drama/spiritual. "Eli Stone" takes the familiar idea of helping those in need and mixes it with a legal drama then adds in spirituality. Oh, and then there's those song and dance routines. Sounds like it shouldn't work but it does, and well. I was sad to see Mr Stone go away never to grace our screens again, but at least we have 2 wonderful seasons to watch again and again.

18. Flashforward (2009–2010)

TV-14 | 42 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

A special task force in the FBI investigates after every person on Earth simultaneously blacks out and awakens with a short vision of their future.

Stars: Courtney B. Vance, Joseph Fiennes, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton

Votes: 62,075

Sci-fi/thriller/drama. Pre-destination vs. free will. A huge subject to cover in a TV show, but FF did it well. I was PO'd at the end because they left so many loose ends and more questions which they probably would have gotten to if they had filmed a second season. A good example (like "Firefly") that studios don't know a classic when it bites them on the ass.

19. The Listener (2009–2014)

TV-14 | 42 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

A young paramedic discovers he has telepathic powers.

Stars: Craig Olejnik, Ennis Esmer, Lauren Lee Smith, Rainbow Sun Francks

Votes: 8,513

Sci-fi/drama/thriller. One of the few Canadian shows I own, this show borrows much from many places but makes it work. A little dark and deals with subject matter that most other shows tend to shy away from. Not my favorite, but worthy of a mention.

20. Quantum Leap (1989–1993)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

During an experiment into time travel, a scientist finds himself trapped in the past, "leaping" into the lives of different people, sorting out their problems and changing history in hopes of getting back to his own life in the present.

Stars: Scott Bakula, Dean Stockwell, Deborah Pratt, Dennis Wolfberg

Votes: 36,429

Sci-fi/drama. Dr Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished! And thus began one of the all time best shows. A heartfelt and warm show that got better as it progressed through it's 5 seasons. A classic to be sure.

21. Sliders (1995–2000)

TV-PG | 60 min | Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

A boy genius and his comrades travel to different parallel universes, trying to find their way back home.

Stars: Jerry O'Connell, Sabrina Lloyd, John Rhys-Davies, Cleavant Derricks

Votes: 20,370

Sci-fi. Similar to the brilliant show "Quantum Leap" in that the Sliders help those in need on their travels. The big difference is that they aren't jumping from time to time they are 'sliding' between parallel worlds. The early episodes are a little weak and show really takes off in season 3.

22. Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007)

TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates.

Stars: Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge

Votes: 101,268

Sci-fi. I love the Stargate franchise. The first of three shows that follow the adventures of a team of 'off-world' explorers who use the Stargate to travel to world's throughout space. Lost steam around season 8 but as a whole worth watching.

23. Stargate: Atlantis (2004–2009)

TV-PG | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

An international team of scientists and military personnel discover a Stargate network in the Pegasus Galaxy and come face-to-face with a new, powerful enemy: The Wraith.

Stars: Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, David Hewlett, Jason Momoa

Votes: 71,636

Sci-fi. In my books this was far superior to SG1 in that it has stronger characters, better bad guys, and is way funnier. If you loved SG1 you'll love this!

24. Stargate Universe (2009–2011)

TV-PG | 43 min | Drama, Sci-Fi

Trapped on an Ancient spaceship billions of light-years from home, a group of soldiers and civilians struggle to survive and find their way back to Earth.

Stars: Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque

Votes: 53,235

Sci-fi. Stargate in name only. This show is more Battlestar Galactica than SG1 of Atlantis. Saying that, it did grow on me and by the end of season 1 I was hooked. More adult oriented than SG1 and Atlantis.

25. Seinfeld (1989–1998)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

The continuing misadventures of neurotic New York City stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York City friends.

Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander

Votes: 350,854

Comedy. Classic comedy with many memorable moments.

26. According to Jim (2001–2009)

TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy, Romance

A television show centered around a macho everyman, his loving wife, and their three precocious children.

Stars: Jim Belushi, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Larry Joe Campbell, Taylor Atelian

Votes: 38,168

Comedy. Funny and surprisingly touching this show focuses on a family living in Chicago. Some episodes were just plain weak, but most of them were laugh out loud funny.

27. The Fugitive (2000–2001)

60 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

Dr. Richard Kimble is framed for his wife's murder by a mysterious one-armed man. During sentencing Kimble escapes intending to catch the one-armed man and find out why he was framed. ... See full summary »

Stars: Tim Daly, Mykelti Williamson, Stephen Lang, Lia Johnson

Votes: 760

Action/thriller. I for one loved this remake of the 1960's show. I was shocked when it didn't come back for a second season as it had all the right elements to make a long lived show - action, thrills, good story-lines, great acting, and heart.

28. Primeval (2007–2011)

TV-14 | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

When strange anomalies start to appear all over England, Professor Cutter and his team must track down and capture all sorts of dangerous prehistoric creatures from Earth's distant past and near future.

Stars: Andrew Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt, Ben Miller, Juliet Aubrey

Votes: 15,419

Leave it to the Brits to come up with a show in which dinosaurs roam modern day England. Havoc and mayhem ensue as a plucky band of dino-hunters save the day again and again...

29. Warehouse 13 (2009–2014)

TV-14 | 43 min | Adventure, Drama, Mystery

Pete and Myka, U.S Secret Service agents, are deployed in South Dakota's Warehouse 13 with a new assignment from an authority above and outside the government.

Stars: Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek, Allison Scagliotti

Votes: 57,309

Think X-Files lite mixed with Indiana Jones lite and you get what this show is like. Good fun; no big shocks or genre altering storylines... just good fun!

30. Fawlty Towers (1975–1979)

TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy

Hotel owner Basil Fawlty's incompetence, short fuse, and arrogance form a combination that ensures accidents and trouble are never far away.

Stars: John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs, Connie Booth

Votes: 100,033

Without doubt one of the funniest things ever to grace the TV screen. John Cleese is brilliant as the OTT hotel owner Basil Fawlty. A classic in every sense.
