1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

R | 91 min | Horror

Votes: 262,108 | Gross: $25.50M

Well, I'm 18 years old, and always fascinated by the older horror movies, so I checked them out! This one I found really exciting. There is some tension that keeps you watching the whole movie. Freddy is simply played perfectly by Robert Englund! I've my doubts of watching the remake, because Freddy isn't Freddy without Robert Englund.

2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

89 Metascore

A ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman

Votes: 138,949 | Gross: $0.09M

Zombies! Another interesting case. I saw the 1990 remake first, but a friend of me said I had to watch this was also. I must say he was right! It's such a good movie, It isn't scary, but I can really believe that it was very scary in 1968. The black guy who plays the leadrole was also very good!

3. The Evil Dead (1981)

NC-17 | 85 min | Horror

71 Metascore

Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.

Director: Sam Raimi | Stars: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker

Votes: 232,193 | Gross: $2.40M

Another Zombie movie, I found this one much scarier than Night Of The Living Dead, The Zombies are very cool and so funny! Sam Raimi did a great job! I also enjoyed Drag Me To Hell, but this one is simply a classic!

4. REC (2007)

R | 78 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

71 Metascore

Directors: Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza | Stars: Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano, Pablo Rosso

Votes: 196,357

A movie that's more of "my generation". I didn't knew what to expect from this one. I had no background information about it and I just began to watch it. Well,, It kept my busy for a while! There's such a weird, exciting tension. I loved the Spanish language. It gave the film another dimension. I didn't see Quarantine yet and I don't know if I'm going to do that.

5. Friday the 13th (2009)

R | 97 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

34 Metascore

A group of young adults visit a boarded up campsite named Crystal Lake where they soon encounter the mysterious Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears, Danielle Panabaker

Votes: 116,821 | Gross: $65.00M

Friday The 13th = Jason Voorhees, at least, that's what I thought. Until last week I saw the original one. I was really unhappy that you didn't see Jason in the whole movie (not thinking about the 5seconds). Now I'm planning to watch the rest of the older movies. So that's why I've chosen the remake. I watched it with my girlfriend who didn't really watch any horror, She thought it was very exciting! She didn't like the blood, but that's something for me. So I really liked this one! I liked this one more than the original one.

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

R | 98 min | Horror

38 Metascore

After picking up a traumatized young hitchhiker, five friends find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chainsaw-wielding loon and his family of equally psychopathic killers.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jessica Biel, Jonathan Tucker, Andrew Bryniarski, Erica Leerhsen

Votes: 152,289 | Gross: $80.57M

Leatherface! Really scary dude, don't you think? I really liked the atmosphere in the movie. I like the sweaty atmosphere in some movies like this one, or The Hills Have Eyes or Wrong Turn. Again I liked this one more than the original, I find the original one very much overrated! It was good, but I find it hard to believe it's scary, even in 1974...

7. Saw (2004)

R | 103 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

46 Metascore

Two strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, and soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, Ken Leung

Votes: 466,218 | Gross: $56.00M

Indeed Saw! I really liked the original one, after this one they went only to search more excitement. The idea was so very good! And the end was a twist I didn't really expect.

8. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Unrated | 127 min | Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

During an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, Gaylen Ross

Votes: 128,444 | Gross: $5.10M

Again an older movie. I've seen the remake first, and that one is coming back later, but I liked this one more! I thought it was going to be much the same, but I was something completely different. It was also very long! The movie just kept going, but it didn't get boring, It kept me watching...

9. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

R | 101 min | Action, Horror

59 Metascore

A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, Jake Weber

Votes: 272,130 | Gross: $59.02M

Modern zombies. I like them. They are much scarier than the old ones. BUT! I like the original Dawn Of The Dead more, If you're 18 and a little bit grown-up you don't only think about movie if it was scary, but you can place the movie in it's time. The intelligence of a movie. It's easy to create a new horror movie if you've seen some older movies... But to create something special, something new, you have to be great! So congratulations for Romero for this one and Night Of The Living Dead. Also Tom Savini is great! His special effects are so perfectly created! If I see Tom Savini's name, I know it's going to be something good.

10. Alien (1979)

R | 117 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

89 Metascore

The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright

Votes: 949,165 | Gross: $78.90M

This one stands for the whole Alien movies. I like them very very much! The atmosphere is very claustrophobic during the whole movie, and Ripley is such an interesting character. The aliens are so scary, still today I find them very scary and I wouldn't want to meet them at night.

11. The Exorcist (1973)

R | 122 min | Horror

83 Metascore

When a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.

Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair, Lee J. Cobb

Votes: 454,385 | Gross: $232.91M

Most of the people find it the most scary movie ever. So when I watched it a few months ago my expectations were very high. Did it meet my expectations? Yes, the film was very interesting, but I thought it would be a movie with more action in it. The moments with the possessed child are scary, most of the times also very funny! After seeing it and when I was in my bed, some of the images of the movie kept coming back, so that made clear it was a good movie.

12. The Ring (2002)

PG-13 | 115 min | Horror, Mystery

57 Metascore

A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Brian Cox, David Dorfman

Votes: 374,631 | Gross: $129.13M

Really scary! I'm still afraid of the creepy girl! No really, the girl isn't my best friend... I'm glad my girlfriend is blonde, when I had one with black hair, I wouldn't feel secure. Just kidding! No it was a very good film that was exciting. I've seen him now a couple of times and it still is a good film.

13. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

Director: Tod Williams | Stars: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Molly Ephraim, David Bierend

Votes: 109,802 | Gross: $84.75M

Only the sequel. I've seen the first one and it was good, but not great. It was a bit too short and there wasn't really much action in the movie. This one is better, there's more action, more things happening and it creeped me really out! I was scared for a while when I was home alone! =D

14. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

R | 81 min | Horror, Mystery

80 Metascore

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

Directors: Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez | Stars: Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, Joshua Leonard, Bob Griffin

Votes: 285,081 | Gross: $140.54M

This was one of my first horror movies I saw. And when I see it today I don't really think it's that scary anymore. But when you watch the movie in a suitable atmosphere it still is one of the scariest movies. I really like the camera-handheld way of filming. Soo, it's just a good movie!

15. The Devil's Rejects (2005)

R | 107 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

54 Metascore

The murderous, backwoods Firefly family take to the road to escape the vengeful Sheriff Wydell, who is not afraid of being as ruthless as his target.

Director: Rob Zombie | Stars: Sid Haig, Sheri Moon Zombie, Bill Moseley, William Forsythe

Votes: 105,706 | Gross: $17.04M

Rob Zombie surprised me! I didn't ever think he could create such a good movie! Again you have a sweaty atmosphere, I think this one is underrated! There aren't much people that know this movie, else I think this one would be in more people's top ten movies.

16. Eden Lake (2008)

Director: James Watkins | Stars: Kelly Reilly, Michael Fassbender, Tara Ellis, Jack O'Connell

Votes: 94,711 | Gross: $0.01M

This one was very good! I saw it on other people's list, so I was going to check it out. After seeing it I was impressed. The acting of the couple was great! The teenagers are also great, I didn't want them to be my neighbours...

17. The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)

The favorite horror movie of my girlfriend! She really is into ghosts and stuff, so whe rented this one. It wasn't really a movie that was original, I saw a few other movies that could be the same title. But I have to admit this one was very scary.

18. The Last House on the Left (2009)

Director: Dennis Iliadis | Stars: Garret Dillahunt, Monica Potter, Tony Goldwyn, Michael Bowen

Votes: 100,260 | Gross: $32.75M

I've only seen the remake of this one. Normally I'm going to see the original one as well, because I simply liked this one! Revenge is sometimes a beautiful thing, as long it's something that only comes back in the movies. =D

19. The Thing (1982)

R | 109 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Masur

Votes: 465,926 | Gross: $13.78M

I really like John Carpenter's work as well. The Thing is very scary! Normally I don't like the arctic atmosphere in movies, but here it's very special and greatly chosen! The Thing itself is very scary as well! A movie don't really need much blood to be a good one, as you can see in some of my choices. I'm just saying, if you've never seen this one? You can be ashamed. Now, if you want to be my friend again, go and see this classic!

20. The Walking Dead (2010–2022)

Stars: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan

Votes: 1,080,335

I know it's not a movie but it simply had to be in the list! It's such a great series and I can't wait for the second season. It's really unbelievable that this isn't known in Europe. They are coming to Europe I've heard so that's good...

21. The Loved Ones (2009)

When Brent turns down his classmate Lola's invitation to the prom, she concocts a wildly violent plan for revenge.

Simply Awesome! I really liked this one. It's so sick, and original! The girl is very scary. The relationship between her and her father isn't really comfortable. Must see!

This one was really weird! I didn't really know what to expect. The story isn't really clear, but there are some twists that are really exciting =)
