Most overrated actors in my opinion

by Man_Of_Science | created - 09 Jun 2011 | updated - 03 Nov 2017 | Public

These actors are, if you ask me, not as good as most people seem to think. Some of the actors on this list (like Adam Sandler) are truly painful to watch, while some are decent enough actors (like Denzel Washington) who sometimes even put in great performances, but ultimately don't deserve their good reputation.

1. Liam Neeson

Actor | Kinsey

Liam Neeson was born on June 7, 1952 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, to Katherine (Brown), a cook, and Bernard Neeson, a school caretaker. He was raised in a Catholic household. During his early years, Liam worked as a forklift operator for Guinness, a truck driver, an assistant architect and an ...

He's not terrible, that's not what I'm saying, but his mere presence is annoying to me. He can be decent when he just has a minor role, but when he plays the lead role... it quite simply doesn't work. He's just not good enough. That deep voice of his, it feels forced, unnatural... I guess that's the way he speaks in real life, but for me it somehow takes away the illusion that he "is" his character, I become very aware of the fact that I'm watching a movie. I have yet to see him portray a memorable character (if someone of you is thinking about "Bryan Mills", I'm sincerely worried about you). Because he's always Liam Neeson, no matter what role he's playing, that's what he seems to get hired for, at least nowadays. Schindler's List was a great film, but it would have been even better without him.

It's excruciating to watch him when he's supposed to be this action hero, which he's just not. I'm chocked that people put him on lists called "most underrated actors". Seriously?

With that voice and the more than occasional overacting, he's really much better suited for the theatre. He should stick to that and quit acting in front of cameras. Now, please?

2. Stellan Skarsgård

Actor | Good Will Hunting

Stellan Skarsgård was born in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden, to Gudrun (Larsson) and Jan Skarsgård. He became a star in his teens through the title role in the TV-series Bombi Bitt och jag (1968). Between the years 1972-88 he was employed at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where...

I'm almost ashamed to be a Swede when I see him. He can be somewhat watchable as long as he's allowed to speak in his native Swedish, but even then he's too one-dimensional. It's a mystery to me that he keeps getting roles in English speaking films. Somehow, it's the same as with Neeson; when you're watching him, you're always watching Stellan, and not a character. He never really fits the role he's playing, whether he's supposed to be American (I mean, really?) or some foreign fella, Russian, German, Scandinavian or whatever. Stiff, static, uninteresting acting. If he features extensively in a movie, that should be taken as a warning sign. AVOID IT! (The lone exception is Good Will Hunting, which he luckily enough didn't manage to ruin.)

3. Adam Sandler

Actor | The Waterboy

Adam Richard Sandler was born September 9, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York, to Judith (Levine), a teacher at a nursery school, and Stanley Alan Sandler, an electrical engineer. He is of Russian Jewish descent. At 17, he took his first step towards becoming a stand-up comedian when he spontaneously took ...

NO, NO, NO. He is not funny, he can't act. Why do they show his films at the cinemas? And why are they even made in the first place?

4. Ashton Kutcher

Actor | That '70s Show

Christopher Ashton Kutcher was born on February 7, 1978 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Diane (Finnegan), who was employed at Procter & Gamble, and Larry Kutcher, a factory worker. He has a fraternal twin brother, Michael, and a sister, Tausha. He is of Czech (father) and Irish, German, and Czech (mother...

I guess it wouldn't really be fair to say he ruins the films he's in, since they, with one or two exceptions, couldn't have been saved even by a talented actor. But I think it is safe to say that this man is not worthy of one second of any self-respecting moviegoer's attention...

Okay, maybe that was a little too harsh on Ashton. Let's let him earn some bucks by featuring in the commercials before the movie starts, if he insists. As long as they're not too long, of course.

5. Kevin Bacon

Actor | Footloose

Kevin Norwood Bacon was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Hilda (Holmes), an elementary school teacher, and Edmund Norwood Bacon, a prominent architect who was on the cover of Time Magazine in November 1964.

Kevin's early training as an actor came from The Manning Street. ...

Hm. I'm not saying he's talentless, just... average. I can't really put my finger on why he bothers me, but he does. I think it has to do with the face... Not very convincing argumentation, I know, but I guess that just proves that this list is of a very subjective nature.

6. Mel Gibson

Actor | Braveheart

Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December of 1990). No, screaming obscene things in a shrill voice doesn't make you funny, and no, it doesn't matter whether you're naked or not.

11. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Actor | Terminator 2: Judgment Day

With an almost unpronounceable surname and a thick Austrian accent, who would have ever believed that a brash, quick talking bodybuilder from a small European village would become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, marry into the prestigious Kennedy family, amass a fortune via shrewd investments and...

It's incomprehensible that some people actually seem to appreciate his acting qualities. Do these people use some irony I don't get? The man's a body builder, for heaven's sake, not an actor (nor a politician, for that matter)!

12. Nicolas Cage

Actor | Face/Off

Nicolas Cage was born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, the son of comparative literature professor August Coppola (whose brother is director Francis Ford Coppola) and dancer/choreographer Joy Vogelsang. He is of Italian (father) and Polish and German (mother) descent. Cage changed his...

Three words say it all: The Wicker Man.

Whenever he plays a somewhat serious role, it doesn't work - at all. He can be decent as long as the character is goofy and weird (like in Adaptation.), maybe because that's what he's like in real life?

13. Steven Seagal

Actor | On Deadly Ground

Steven Frederic Seagal was born in Lansing, Michigan, to Patricia Anne (Fisher), a medical technician, and Samuel Seagal, a high school math teacher. His paternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, and his mother had English, German, and distant Irish and Dutch, ancestry. The enigmatic ...

At first I thought his reputation was not high enough to feature on a list like this, but on second thought, the fact that he keeps getting paid for making movies is enough to put him up here.

Don't get me wrong, he's a great director, but honestly, someone has to address the elephant in the room... his acting is rather stiff and awkward. Decent, not excellent. Come to think of it, I believe I've never seen him change facial expressions... probably because he has just the one.

20. Thomas Jane

I'm not denying that this guy's a talented actor, he sure is, and many of his films are enjoyable. Yet I don't share the rest of the world's enthusiasm and admiration. Why? Because he's too... American. Yes, I think that's it. Too often he's playing the same role, it's him against the world, and he's so self-righteous. And when he's playing the bad guy, something rings false. He really didn't the deserve an Oscar for Training Day. In my eyes, he's limited as an actor. You might argue that it's not his fault that he gets the roles that he does, but, sorry Denzel, you're on the list.

27. Clive Owen

Actor | Children of Men
