The First Tier - The Chameleons

I often refer to them as chameleons, since the characters they portray tend to be quite different from each other. Sometimes they may not be readily recognized from one performance to another. Tier two belongs to those who have shown some range, but tend to play the same kind of character in most of their films. Tier three belongs to those who basically play the same character in the majority of their films but do it so well that we love them anyway. Here are my favorites from the first tier. And I know I have forgotten some.
1. Anthony Hopkins

The Actor's Actor. He has played so many different roles and different characters. A truly amazing actor. I will say that the first five actors in this list are the ones most outstanding in my mind. They are all exceptional actors. My personal favorite Hopkins movie? I honestly can't decide. The Elephant Man, his Hannibal Lector movies, everything he does he does with exceptional skill and grace.
2. William H. Macy

I really had a hard time choosing between Macy and Hopkins for the first place. Macy is right up there. My personal favorite Macy movie: Wow, how does one pick? Fargo? The Cooler? So many excellent performances.
3. Vincent D'Onofrio

D'Onofrio is often barely recognizable one movie to the next. A true chameleon and an incredible actor. My personal favorite D'Onofrio movie: The Thirteenth Floor (he plays two roles).
4. Giovanni Ribisi

5. Johnny Depp
