- DirectorRob MarshallStarsZiyi ZhangKen WatanabeMichelle YeohThe heartwarming tale of Nitta Sayuri, a young Japanese woman who transcended from her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.Highly underrated in my opinion. This film has beautiful visuals, great acting, and a wonderful and unforgettable story. The criticism is mostly because of Chinese actresses playing Japanese roles, but I ask you this: is it wrong if an American actor plays a British role, or vice versa? To me, it's the same thing, and it shouldn't matter at all. It's the talent that matters.
- DirectorVictor FlemingGeorge CukorSam WoodStarsClark GableVivien LeighThomas MitchellA sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.Every year, my mom and I stay at home for one day and watch this 4-hour long masterpiece. The first time she showed this to me, I was surprisingly captivated. Vivien Leigh's acting as Scarlett O'Hara is some of the best acting I know of, and I cannot wait to watch this movie again.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare. There's something so fascinating in this movie. The dark elements capture you, the music is enchanting, and the character of Nina is so complex she just draws you in. A lot of people complain about the sex scenes and all of that, but if you stomach through it, it's not that bad. Trust me. The ending is beautiful, and may be one of my favorite endings of all time.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. We all know that Hayao Miyazaki is a genius in animation, I don't think there's a movie by him that's truly bad (people say Tales from Earthsea isn't his best, but when you think about it, it isn't a terrible movie compared to many other bad or mediocre films). This is his best work, and I've loved it ever since I was a child.
- DirectorDanny BoyleLoveleen TandanStarsDev PatelFreida PintoSaurabh ShuklaA teenager from the slums of Mumbai becomes a contestant on the show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati?' When interrogated under suspicion of cheating, he revisits his past, revealing how he had all the answers.I watched this with my mom one day and we were both amazed at what we were seeing. The story is unreal, but it's incredible to watch. The music is either fun or mysteriously menacing, and there's a beauty in this film I still can't put my finger on. My favorite film of 2008.
- DirectorRobert MulliganStarsGregory PeckJohn MegnaFrank OvertonAtticus Finch, a widowed lawyer in Depression-era Alabama, defends a Black man against an undeserved rape charge, and tries to educate his young children against prejudice. We watched this in our sophomore English class in high school, and in a class full of untamed jerks, it seemed like I was the only girl in the entire school to enjoy this movie. Atticus Finch may be one of the greatest heroes of all time, as well as this movie. I will love it and cherish it forever.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIvana BaqueroAriadna GilSergi LópezIn the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world. The only foreign films I'd seen before this one were Japanese films. My mind was in shock when I saw this film because of how beautifully disturbing it is. Combine a fairytale with a war, and this is what you get. There are even moments where it was heart-wrenching to watch, but I'm glad I got to watch this beautiful film.
- DirectorShôgo FuruyaSatoshi KonStarsTôru EmoriYoshiaki UmegakiAya OkamotoOn Christmas Eve, three homeless people living on the streets of Tokyo discover a newborn baby among the trash and set out to find its parents.Satoshi Kon sure was something. His animation is realistic and fun to look at, and it really amazed me in this film. Despite there being much more colors and things to look at in his other film "Paprika" (another fantastic film), this one amazed me more. The story is what motivates you to watch the full movie, and I want to sit down and watch it again and again.
- DirectorDaniel BarnzStarsElle FanningPatricia ClarksonFelicity HuffmanConfounded by her clashes with the seemingly rule-obsessed world, a troubled young girl seeks enlightenment from her unconventional drama teacher.Another underrated film that definitely deserves more attention. When I rented this film at my library, I didn't really know what I was expecting. But from then on, I watched this film two to three times a day (maybe even more) throughout the week I rented it. It's charming, dramatic, and Elle Fanning is a surprisingly great actress. This may be her spotlight.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaOn a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.Another Miyazaki masterpiece. It was hard deciding whether I liked this better than Spirited Away, but I decided for Spirited Away to be higher on this list because I've known it a little bit longer than Mononoke. That doesn't mean this film is bad. This film deserves so much praise for its animation. There are times where it even blew me away.
