- DirectorMario BavaStarsJohn Phillip LawMarisa MellMichel PiccoliA master thief and his sensual lover pull off heist after heist, all while an envious coalition of cops and gangsters is gunning for them.An adaptation of the popular fumetti, from director Mario Bava. It features a great score from Ennio Morricone and some inventive sets. The acting isn't the greatest, but it is campy 60s fun and certainly looks good. I still think the Mysties were a bit harsh on it.
- DirectorTed V. MikelsStarsMichael AnsaraFrancine YorkAnthony EisleySquad of beautiful government agents tries to catch saboteurs. The acting is attrocious but it still has a sense of silly fun to it and Michael Ansara is a great B villain. You could do a lot worse.
- DirectorGordon HesslerStarsJohn Phillip LawCaroline MunroTom BakerSinbad and the vizier of Marabia, followed by evil magician Koura, seek the three golden tablets that can gain them access to the ancient temple of the Oracle of All Knowledge. Not quite up to the 7th Voyage of Sinbad, but I find it the most entertaining, largely due to Tom Baker as the evil wizard. Having Caroline Munro in Arabian attire doesn't hurt, either. I still feel this was John Phillip Law's best role.
- DirectorKevin ConnorStarsDoug McClureJohn McEnerySusan PenhaligonDuring World War I, a German U-boat sinks a British ship and takes the survivors on board. After it takes a wrong turn, the submarine takes them to the unknown land of Caprona, where they find dinosaurs and neanderthals. The budget is low and the dinosaurs are laughable, but a script co-written by Michael Moorcock can elevate many things. The filmmakers do their best to hide the flaws and mostly get away with it.
- DirectorNick NostroStarsDan VadisHelga LinéGiovanni Di BenedettoSpartacus And The 10 GladiatorsMy favorite sword & sandal picture, complete with beefy oiled goodness. Spartacus is the supporting player to Rocca and the other 9 gladiators. These guys make up in charm and a sense of fun that they lack in acting skills, or just to forgive the bad dubbing. The fights are below the level of pro wrestling but you don't really care.
- DirectorMarco VicarioStarsRossana PodestàPhilippe LeroyGastone MoschinAn international gang of thieves, led by Albert the Professor and his seductive assistant Giorgia, use meticulous planning to steal seven tons of gold from the Swiss National Bank in Geneva. This is a rather silly Italian caper film that succeeds on charm and a likeable group of characters. The technical aspects of the heist make the Mission Impossible series look like a documentary, but who cares? Plus, it has one of the most sizzling hot female leads in any caper.
- DirectorMarco VicarioStarsPhilippe LeroyRossana PodestàGastone MoschinThe Professor (Leroy) and his men are captured by U.S. agents during an attempted train robbery. To avoid jail, they must kidnap a Latin dictator. The film is filled with cool sci-fi gadgets, including flying jetpacks. Austin Powers would love this fast moving, groovy sci-fi intrigue thriller. Podesta is a wow! From nice color 16mm print. They're back and this time they are working for the US government. The Seven are hired to help undermine a Carribean dictator (a very thinly veiled Fidel Castro). Not quite as good as the first, but it makes up for it with the silliest squabble over gold bullion ever seen.
- DirectorAndré HunebelleStarsJean MaraisLouis de FunèsMylène DemongeotThe best men of France - a brave journalist and an extremely energetic commissioner - attack the trail of a mysterious criminal mastermind.Take a classic French pulp villain and mix in an attempt at a James Bond spoof and you have one weird but fun film. Jean Marais is wonderful in the dual role of hero Fandor and villain Fantomas, with Louis de Funes shining as the haples Inspector Juve. This film is great if for no other reason than a flying Citroen.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsChristopher LambertIsabelle AdjaniRichard BohringerOn improvising a burglary at a shady tycoon's home, Fred takes refuge in the hip and surreal universe of the Paris Metro and encounters its assorted denizens, the tycoon's henchmen and his disenchanted young wife. Not Luc Besson's best, by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a charming group of characters. Christophe Lambert is hiding out in the Paris Metro terminals and access tunnels and discovers a whole community of characters there, including a roller skating purse snatcher (Jean Hughes Anglade) and a wannabe drummer (Jean Reno). He even puts together a band, which includes the score composer, Eric Serra. This was Besson's attempt at a modern New Wave film and lacks the beauty of its contemporary, Diva, but makes up for it with its collection of misfits.
- DirectorPeter MaxwellStarsWendy HughesChantal ContouriCarmen DuncanTouch and Go is a 1980 Australian heist film starring Wendy Hughes. An Aussie caper film, with a group of ladies who steal to fund a school. They hit on the idea of the perfect robbery, a resort hotel on a coastal island. Of course things go wrong. The story is ridiculous and there are holes in the logic at every turn, but you still root for the ladies to pull off the crime.
- DirectorRobert AldrichStarsPeter FalkVicki FrederickLaurene LandonSmall timer female wrestling team "The California Dolls" and their manager must face the hardship of their sport and life to suceed. This is an odd one, with a great cast of character actors and two lovely ladies who ply their trade in the wrestling world. It ignores the reality that pro wrestling is staged, but succeeds in making you care about the characters and the matches are well staged. The crooked referee is cliched but he gets his.
- DirectorJames A. WestmanStarsEdward AsnerElaine GiftosVerne GagneFrank Bass takes a stand and defends what he thinks is right. Gamblers and money-grubbing conspire to corrupt the industry. Frank's efforts climax as he promotes an over-the-hill champion in the final matches of his career. No, not the Mickey Roarke film. This has Ed Asner as a promoter trying to set up a match between an aging champion and a young up and commer. The wrestling was provided by Verne Gagne's AWA promotion, with Gagne himself as the champ. Real wrestlers fill out the card, including the Bruiser and the Crusher, Dusty Rhodes & Dick Murdoch, Ken Patera, Ray Stevens and Nick Bockwinkel, Billy Robinson, and a young (and brown haired) Ric Flair. The acting, apart from the professional actors, is terrible and the script is chliched, but Asner rescues the film from being horrible and the matches are well staged and filmed. It almost gets you to believe that the matches are real contests (until the bar fight between Rhodes & Murdoch and Harold Sakata).
- DirectorEnzo BarboniStarsTerence HillBud SpencerSteffen ZachariasA lazy, unorthodox gunfighter and his portly, horse-thieving brother defend a Mormon settlement from a land-grabbing Major, a Mexican bandit, and their henchmen.A spoof of spaghetti westerns, with Terrence Hill. Loads of silliness but Hill has the charm to pull it off, even if he turns a bunch of pacifists into brawlers.
- DirectorJohn Llewellyn MoxeyStarsAlex CordMariette HartleyTed CassidyA scientist who has been preserved in suspended animation wakes up to find himself in a primitive society in the future.A failed pilot from Gene Rodenberry. It suffers from budget, but not from lack of imagination. I should hate it but there is just something that brings me back to watch it again. Alex Cord was far better than John Saxon in the later attempts to realize this story.
- DirectorAl AdamsonStarsJim KellyBill RoyRoberto ContrerasRobert Sand, agent of D.R.A.G.O.N. (Defense Reserve Agency Guardian Of Nations), is playing tennis on his vacation with a beautiful black girl, when his commanding officers ask him to save a Chinese girl who happens to be Sand's girlfriend, and the daughter of a top Eastern Ambassador. The ransom for the abduction was the secret for a terrific new weapon - the freeze bomb - but the 'Warlock' behind the deed is also into the business of drug dealing and Voodoo ritual murders. The search takes him from Hong Kong to California through Miami, and plenty of action, against bad men, bad girl, and bad animals.Jim Kelly stars as the coolest secret agent to battle midgets and thugs, this side of Matt Helm. Kelly "sounds like he stepped out of a comic book," but you can forgive him, as he keeps this from being a turkey.
- DirectorRobert ClouseStarsJim KellyGloria HendryScatman CrothersA Mafia buy out of Papa Byrd's karate school downtown ends in his death. Byrd's daughter, Sydney, refuses to sell, and wants revenge. Byrd's students call the Black Belt Jones for help. Jones reluctantly teams with Sydney in many battles.Another Jim Kelly feature, giving a Blaxploitation twist to the murdered master martial arts cliche. This time, Kelly has a decent supporting cast, so fun is had by all, with the climax being a fight in a car wash and a pile of suds that flows out of it.
- DirectorJimmy T. MurakamiRoger CormanStarsGeorge PeppardRobert VaughnRichard ThomasA farm boy recruits a band of outlaws to save the planet Akir from forces that threaten to wipe them out from the face of the universe. A battle stretching beyond the stars begins here.Probably the best of the Star Wars knockoffs, with model and effects work by James Cameron. The story is essentially a reworking of Kurasawa's Seven samurai, by way of Sturges' Magnificent Seven, complete with Robert Vaughn recreating his gunfighter character, in space. John Saxon is a fairly despicable villain and Sybil Danning is a particularly sexy Amazon, complete with a costume with what looks like a pair of hands clutching her breasts. John Boy Walton is here, flying a talking ship, with breasts, while George Peppard plays a spacegoing cowboy. It should be horrible but it is pretty good.
- DirectorStewart RaffillStarsRobert UrichMary CrosbyMichael D. RobertsIn a distant future scarce of water, space pirates get caught after stealing ice from a spaceship. They are sold to a princess looking for her dad. He might have found a planet abundant with water. This is beyond silly, with tons of lame jokes (including space herpes) and an appearance by the excrutiatingly unfunny Bruce Villanche, but Robert Urich saves it as the charming hero, aided by a pretty good company of supporting players that includes Angelica Huston, Ron Perlman, and football's John Matuzak.
- DirectorLance HoolStarsPatrick SwayzeLisa NiemiAnthony ZerbeIn a post-apocalyptic world, a warrior wandering through the desert comes upon a group of settlers who are being menaced by the leader of a murderous gang who's after the water they control.Patrick Swayze stars in this Shane-meets-Mad Max oddity. There's plenty of badness, but not from Swayze. The weapons look like they were made in a high school shop class.
- DirectorRichard MurphyStarsJack LemmonRicky NelsonJohn LundDuring WW2, Lt. Rip Crandall, who was a yachtsman before the war, takes command of the USS Echo, a sailing ship, for a secret mission in waters patrolled by Japanese warships. It's not Operation Petticoat, but it is a pretty entertaining piece of fluff, featuring Jack Lemon and Ricky Nelson. If it weren't for Lemon, and a couple of the crew, this ship would sink.
- DirectorOley SassoneStarsAlex Hyde-WhiteJay UnderwoodRebecca StaabWhen dosed with cosmic rays, four intrepid explorers are given incredible powers. This was made to keep the rights to the film option on Marvel's FF and is strictly low budget. However, it has a pretty decent script and the actors come far closer to the characters than the later big budget outing.
- DirectorJack ArnoldRicou BrowningStarsTony RandallJanet LeighRoddy McDowallA marine scientist volunteers to have his family live in a prototype underwater home to prove it's practical.Absurd Tony Randall film about a marine engineer who must live with his family in an underwater dwelling to prove his design is viable. A subplot involving gold mining on the ocean surface provides a minor distraction and the musical numbers are typical 60s pop fluff. Look for a young Richard Dreyfuss as one of the band, while Jim Backus, Roddy McDowell, Charlotte Ray, and Janet Leigh round out a cast of fine actors.
- DirectorDon TaylorStarsKirk DouglasMartin SheenKatharine RossA modern aircraft carrier is thrown back in time to 1941 near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS Nimitz travels back in time to 1941, just in time to encounter the Japanese task force headed to attack Pearl Harbor. There is no attempt to explain the time travel; it just dives head first into an odd what if? Imagine if the technological might of the US Navy of today was available, complete with a knowledge of history, to stop the attack on Pearl Harbor. Plenty of moral arguments, and some great aerial work, plus a solid cast elevates a rather dubious premise.
- DirectorWilliam WitneyStarsVincent PriceCharles BronsonHenry HullIn 1868, an American scientist and his team become hostages of fanatical pacifist Robur who uses his airship Albatross to destroy military targets on Earth. The film tries too hard to be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and misses a chunk of a great other novel from Verne, but the film is mostly well staged and Vincent Price is great as Robur. Charles Bronson is another matter...
- DirectorRod HardyStarsDavid HasselhoffLisa RinnaSandra HessAgent Nick Fury is asked to fight the menace of Hydra after exiling himself in the Yukon since the end of the Cold War.This is some cheesy goodness, featuring David Hasselhoff as the cigar chomping superspy, from Marvel Comics. It's too low budget to do the concept justice and the acting is way over the top, but dang it, this is a fun film! It was the best of Marvel's string of failed tv shows and pilots, dating back to Spider-Man (with The Incredible Hulk being the lone standout).
- DirectorVincent McEveetyStarsCathy Lee CrosbyKaz GarasAndrew PrineA super-hero uses her powers to thwart an international spy ring.Cathy Lee Crosby stars in this pilot film that took a left turn at Albequerque. The costume looks like a rejected cheerleader uniform and Crosby is as bland as can be, but thank heavens for Ricardo Montalban.
- DirectorPeter YatesStarsKen MarshallLysette AnthonyFreddie JonesA prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet, Krull.A wooden hero and a weird mix of fantasy and sci-fi can't keep this from being a fun film. It succeeds mostly through the supporting cast, including Liam Neeson, Robby Coltrane, Alun Armstrong, and David Batley as Ergo the Magnificent (who demonstrates how Jar-Jar could have been a decent character, if Lucas had tried harder).
- DirectorRussell MulcahyStarsChristopher LambertSean ConneryClancy BrownAn immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his immortal opponents, a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled "Prize".The only decent entry in the franchise, for my money (though the tv show has moments). It shouldn't work but somehow it does, despite a French actor playing a Scotsman, the Scotsman playing an Egyptian, living in Spain, and every music video cliche that Russel Mulcahy can bring from his previous employment. Sean Connery and Clancy Brown make the film into something more than it is.
- DirectorJohn MiliusStarsSean ConneryCandice BergenBrian KeithA Berber chieftain triggers an international incident, drawing the involvement of Theodore Roosevelt, when he kidnaps an American widow and her children in 1900s Morocco.A rather disjointed film from John Millius that succeeds on the charisma of Sean Connery and Candace Bergen, with help from Brian Keith, well cast as Teddy Roosevelt. Millius threw history out the window in favor of a good yarn.
- DirectorMichel HazanaviciusStarsFrançois DamiensJean DujardinKhalid MaadourSecret agent OSS 117 foils Nazis, beds local beauties, and brings peace to the Middle East.Delightfully funny and charming French spoof of the Bond films and the era that produced them. Tons of fun and the strangest chicken fight ever.
- DirectorPhil KarlsonStarsDean MartinStella StevensDaliah LaviRetired agent Matt Helm is re-activated in order to stop an evil organization from exploding an atom bomb over the USA and starting WWIII.By far the best of the Matt Helm spy spoofs, with a lovely Stella Stevens and Victor Buono as the improbably Asian villain Tung Tse. Definitely the zenith of the Helm films, which is pretty sad, since it was the first (though the others are entertaining in various degrees).
- DirectorDaniel MannStarsJames CoburnLee J. CobbGila GolanWhen scientists use eco-terrorism to impose their will on the world by affecting extremes in the weather, Intelligence Chief Cramden calls in top agent Derek Flint.James Coburn stars in the spy spoof; sort of James Bond meets Doc Savage. The enemy organization, Galaxy, is headed by three scientists of different ethnicities, though their names don't match their ethnicity. Very charming, if more than a bit absurd. Coburn and Lee J Cob made a great team here and in the sequel.
- DirectorDon SharpStarsChristopher LeeNigel GreenJoachim FuchsbergerAfter cheating death, master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu returns with a plot to contaminate the River Thames with a powerful toxin extracted from Tibetan poppies. My personal favorite of the Christopher Lee Fu Manchu films. The plot is intriguing and it zooms right along, complete with a good cast and some fine locales. The setting is an odd mix of the 20s and the 60s and is far from politically correct, but it works. The series would never live up to this beginning and Nigel Greene is sorely missed in the later films.
- DirectorDuccio TessariStarsAlain DelonStanley BakerOttavia PiccoloIn the New World, a new Spanish governor finds the province of Nueva Aragón under the iron fist of the corrupt Colonel Huerta and vows to bring justice under the guise of a masked avenger.Alain Delon stars in this mix of Zorro and a spaghetti western. It's not Tyrone Power but it is pretty lively. The US cut is much shorter than the European.
- DirectorSergey BondarchukStarsRod SteigerChristopher PlummerOrson WellesFacing the decline of everything he has worked to obtain, conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte and his army confront the British at the Battle of Waterloo. The film is overly long and its hard to keep up with some of the characters, but Rod Steiger is excellent as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer is almost as good as Wellington. It helps to have some knowledge of the battle to follow the plot, but not essential. The battle sequences are stunning and the scale is epic, though it can't match such masterpieces as War and Peace.
- DirectorAndrew V. McLaglenStarsRoger MooreJames MasonAnthony PerkinsWhen terrorists take over two oil rigs, and threaten to blow them up if their demands are not met, an eccentric anti-terrorism expert volunteers his unique commando unit to stop them.Roger Moore takes on a character role; and he's pretty good in it! This was another attempt to translate Moore's Bond success into other films, along with The Sea Wolves and The Wild Geese. However, this time, he actually has a personality other than Roger Moore. He is Ruffus Excalibur Ffolkes, commando for hire. He must stop Tony Perkins from destroying a North Sea oil platform and refining facility. James Mason is along in a fine supporting role as a naval admiral.
- DirectorGordon FlemyngStarsPeter CushingRoy CastleJennie LindenAn eccentric inventor and his companions travel in his TARDIS to the Planet Skaro and battle the evil menace of the Daleks.Movie version of the BBC series, with Peter Cushing as an Earth scientist who has created a time machine. Apart from that, the plot follows the tv series fairly well. It is hampered by budget, but not imagination and Cushing makes a more likeable Doctor than William Hartnell, if not quite as iconic.
- DirectorGordon FlemyngStarsPeter CushingBernard CribbinsRay BrooksDr. Who and his companions arrive on Earth in the year 2150 AD, only to discover that the planet has been invaded and its population enslaved by the dreaded Daleks.Peter Cushing's second outing as the Doctor is a much more exciting film, with the Daleks now conquering the earth, in the near future. Bernard Cribbins brings some much needed comic relief to this short-lived film series and would get to come back to the world of the Doctor in the new Millenium.
- DirectorCharles BailStarsMichael SarrazinTim McIntireRaul JuliaAn eclectic group of people takes part in a secret, and illegal, cross country road race. Not as well known as Canonball Run but it is far more charming. Michael Sarazin heads a cast of fine character actors, as they participate in the illegal cross country race; but it is Raul Julia who makes the film a classic.
- DirectorDelbert MannStarsDick Van DykeBarbara FeldonJohn McGiverA butler and the staff of an eccentric aged philanthropist whose family wealth is exhausted engage in larceny and crimes to maintain her lifestyle and provide funds for her charitable activities. This Dick Van Dyke vehicle is no Mary Poppins, but it is a nice little caper film. Van Dyke is the butler to an eccentric rich woman, or so she believes. Actually, she doesn't have two pennies to rub together, but the servants carry out a series of thefts and cons to keep that knowledge from her. A fly in the ointment appears in the form of Barbara Feldon, who soon fals for the rogue Fitzwilly. A last chance at the greatest caper, a robbery of Gimbles, during the Christmas season, tops of this mad affair. Very charming, with a sweet little romance, to boot.
- DirectorShan HuaStarsDanny LeeTerry LiuHsieh WangPrincess Dragon Mom and her mutant army have risen, and only Infra-Man can stop them.A Hong Kong attempt at recreating the Japanese hero, Kamen Rider (the Masked Rider). Lots of monster henchmen in goofy costumes and martial arts battles galore. A bit slow at times; but, all in all, a pretty decent film.
- DirectorDon SiegelPeter R. HuntRobert Ellis MillerStarsBurt ReynoldsLesley-Anne DownDavid NivenTwo sophisticated jewel thieves join forces to steal $30 million in uncut jewels. Despite a continuous exchange of quips they eventually become romantically involved. One of Burt Reynold's better films of the 80s. Burt is a jewel thief, while Lesley Ann Down is a kleptomaniac sent to catch a thief by David Niven. Together, they hatch a plot to steal a diamond shipment, with an ex-Nazi pilot, a jazz musician radio operator, and a rather stuffy British planner, while keeping Niven at bay.
- DirectorBrian ClemensStarsHorst JansonJohn CarsonShane BriantA master swordsman and former soldier and his hunchbacked assistant hunt vampires. One of the last of the Hammer films and what should have been the first of a great franchise. Horst Janson is the titular hero, a former officer of the Imperial Guard who hunts down vampires, aided by his hunchback colleague, Heironymous Grost (John Carter). The vampires have a unique twist of having different weaknesses, which means our hero must deduce their weakness before he can slay the beast. Caroline Munro is along as a gypsy girl. This is screaming for a remake.
- DirectorJohn SchlesingerStarsDavid RaschePaul JabaraHoward HessemanA satire of American progression in which a mayor tries to bribe an official to ensure a ramp connects Ticlaw to an up-and-coming intrastate. When his plan fails, the town residents are forced to take matters into their own hands.A silly little film about a group of travellers on their way to Florida. On the other end of the journey is Ticlaw, a little town that has been cutoff by the new interstate. Mayor William Devane hatches a plan to bring the tourists to them. Great mix of actors in the charmingly funny film, including Howard hessman, Beau Bridges, Beverly DeAngelo, and Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.
- DirectorRod AmateauStarsLisa OzGlenn MorshowerGary Lee CavagnaroThe adventures of a group of teenagers at a drive-in theatre in Texas one weekend night.A tale of a group of Texas townfolk on a night out to the local drive-in. Made mostly with local actors it is able to capture the feel of a real small town while presenting a very funny story.
- DirectorJack CardiffStarsRod TaylorTrevor HowardJill St. JohnColonel Mostyn of the British Intelligence Service suspects there is a leak in his department and hires an American expatriate to eliminate various targets working for the Soviets.Rod Taylor stars as a man mistakenly recruited by British Intelligence as an assassin. Taylor at first subcontracts the work to Eric Sykes, but soon must pull it off for real. Lots of fun in this spy spoof.
- DirectorJamie UysStarsN!xauMarius WeyersSandra PrinslooA comic allegory about a traveling Bushman who encounters modern civilization and its stranger aspects, including a clumsy scientist and a band of revolutionaries.Delightful little film from Botswana. Best described as a National Geographic special gone horribly wrong. A bushman of the Kalahari travels to return a Coke bottle to the gods, while the world's most inept rebel group attempts a coup and a toungetied, klutzy animal researcher attempts to bring the new school teacher to a small village. Hillarity abounds, though mostly at the expense of the whites. It spawned a sequel that wasn't quite as good, but was still charming.
- DirectorHarold BeckerStarsMatthew ModineLinda FiorentinoMichael SchoefflingA high school wrestler in Spokane, Washington has trouble focusing on his training regimen when a beautiful young drifter takes up temporary residence at his home.About the only 80s serious teen drama not done by John Hughes. This one has Mathew Modine as a high school wrestler out to fulfill a dream to take on the top wrestler in the conference. Along the way, he encounters Linda Fiorantino, a feisty young woman in need of some assistance. The film succeeds despite the cliches and features a great soundtrack, including a well used "Lunatic Fringe," by Red Rider, and "Gambler," from Madonna, who was just starting to make a name for herself and appears in a small role as a singer in a bar (what a stretch).
- DirectorNorman TokarStarsJodie FosterDavid NivenHelen HayesWelcome to Candleshoe, a stately English manor where a swashbuckling pirate hid a fortune in Spanish doubloons centuries ago. And that's what young orphan Casey and a sly con man are determined to find.A very lightweight Disney live-action film, with Jodie Foster, in her last outing for Disney. What elevates it from normal Disney fare is the tremendous cast of actors, including Helen Hayes, David Niven, and Leo McKern as the scheming Harry Bundage. Niven gets to engage in some character work as he dons various disguises to fool Hayes into believing that she still has wealth, while caring for three adopted orphans. Foster proves equal to the seasoned adults and has great chemistry with both Niven and Hayes. Funny, entertaining, and touching.
- DirectorIda LupinoStarsRosalind RussellHayley MillsBinnie BarnesTwo high-spirited young students at St. Francis Academy keep things hopping for the challenged Mother Superior and her staff of bewildered Sisters.Nothing guilty about this one. A charming film about a convent school, where Haley Mills pits her scathingly brilliant ideas against Revereand Mother Rosalind Russell. Plenty of funny scenes as well as some very moving moments, even for an atheist. A great film from Ida Lupino, with the ladies getting all of the fun. This would be fine fodder for a remake, with an adult Haley Mills taking on the role of Sister Ligori, the math teacher (I can't quite see her as the Reverand Mother).
