- DirectorGeorge SchaeferStarsJudith AndersonCharlton HestonMichael AllinsonIn the sixteenth century, Queen Elizabeth I (Dame Judith Anderson) is the ruler of England. Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex (Charlton Heston) is her lover, best friend, and worst enemy.
- The capricious Queen Elizabeth presents her favorite, Lord Leigh, with a ring, saying that if ever he is in trouble he should send the ring to her, and she would aid him. Lord Leigh scorns the admiration of the Countess of Southerville, and secretly courts Bessie, a poor wench. The countess learns of this affair, and sends word to his noble Lordship that she is about to inform the Queen. Fearing Her Majesty's displeasure, he impetuously joins a conspiracy against her life, but is discovered, arrested, and thrown into the Tower of London. There he remembers the Queen's promise, and sends a friend to deliver the ring to Elizabeth. But, unfortunately, it falls into the hands of the jealous Countess, who revengefully conceals it. Soon afterward, the Countess repents of her action, and delivers the ring, but it is now too late. Lord Leigh has paid for his treason with his head.
- The Virgin Queen of England, during whose reign England reached its highest status of culture, was not without traces of the moral weakness of her father, Henry the VIII. Her infatuations were extremely numerous, as the sudden deaths of many of her statesmen and chief advisors substantiate. None, however, approached closer to her real life than did the Earl of Essex, more familiarly known as Sir Walter Raleigh. This courtier first ingratiated himself to the regard of Queen Elizabeth by placing his robe across a puddle which lay in her path. For his consideration Elizabeth regarded him with a liberal amount of attention at the court ball held shortly thereafter, much to the chagrin of Admiral Howard. This gentleman could not conceal his jealousy and bore from the first a deep-seated fatal grudge against the earl. As a mark of her special favor, the Queen gives to Essex her costliest ring, which was to bear with it an absolute acquittal from all injuries against herself or state. As time went on the gallant earl was sent to quell the Irish, who were rising in revolt across the border line. However, his attempts were baffled by the soldiers and be was compelled to return to London, humiliated and downcast. The intriguing Howard incites the queen to refuse the defeated earl entrance to the royal apartments, which so preys upon the mind of the disappointed nobleman that he makes himself a party to a conspiracy then on foot against the Virgin Queen. The plot is discovered. Essex is identified as one of its chief instigators, is captured and condemned to death. The queen, mindful of her solemn promise, selects Lady Howard to go as messenger to her former lover, the luckless earl, and bear the news that the queen is ready to pardon him for his treason if he but return her ring. The humiliated Essex at first prefers to die than win the grace of his monarch because of past favors, but is finally persuaded to deliver the trinket to Lady Howard, who proceeds at once to the royal apartments to hand it to the queen. On her way she intercepts her husband. The scheming admiral realizing the cudgel he almost has in his hands, plans to revenge himself by wresting the ring from his wife. In the meantime the queen is told that her former lover refuses to return the trinket and in her ire she orders the execution of Essex to proceed at once. Slowly he mounts the guillotine to his fated end, where the queen bears witness to his courageous approach to death. Even though her lover is lost, she cannot forget him and casts the castle in an atmosphere of deepest mourning, which almost interferes with her transaction of state affairs. Finally the truth comes out. It is discovered that Lady Howard has escaped and that the admiral possesses the ring. In her fury the queen rises to give orders to capture this dastardly couple, but the revelation is too big a shock to her. She swoons as the figure of Essex on the execution platform rises as a mist before her, and from this swoon she never revives.
- DirectorFrank R. GrowcottJohn McDowellStarsAlbert WardSybil HareOlympia SumnerThe romantic attachment which the humbly born William Shakespeare had for the beautiful and gentle Charlotte Clopton, of Clopton Hall, is authenticated by the letters of many people of the period, and as it is one of the most potent factors in the development of the genius of Shakespeare, it is very appropriate that the film should open with the first meeting of the future playwright and the beautiful young girl. This acquaintance always remained a romantic one, on the part of young Shakespeare, but Charlotte felt the attraction more seriously. Meanwhile, Sir Hugh Clopton, Charlotte's father, who is an ardent Catholic, shelters in his house a man named Carry, who is a traitor to the Queen; he does this at the command of Pope Gregory XIII, not knowing the character of the man he is harboring. Shakespeare, pursuing the apparently gay and thoughtless tenor of his career, but in reality training the great qualities of mind which were afterwards to make him famous, displeases a lawyer in whose employ he has been, and while he is trying to explain this to his mother, a tragic scene takes place, in the assassination of the traitor Parry. Too late. Sir Hugh Clopton learns of Parry's treachery, through Shakespeare's lawyer employer, who informs Sir Thomas Lucy of the plot, and also accuses Sir Hugh of being in it. Sir Hugh's celebration of his daughter's birthday is rudely interrupted by the arrival of soldiers, who are come to arrest him for complicity in the treasonous design. The Queen pardons Sir Hugh, but his lovely daughter falls ill of a mysterious malady, which is wrongly diagnosed as The Plague, but which is a fatal one, nevertheless despite the great danger of infection. Shakespeare bids her a passionate farewell before she dies. Some months later Shakespeare, now beginning to be the great man of his village, champions pretty, shy Anne Hathaway at the Twelfth Night Revels. Their acquaintance ripens, and their courtship is played out in the beautiful environs of Stratford and about the Anne Hathaway cottage. In sharp contrast to the idyllic Anne Hathaway of the courtship, the wedded wife of Shakespeare is undoubtedly the shrew, whose sharp tongue drives her husband to the distraction of the "Lucy Arms." This condition of things, added to the fact that Shakespeare has incurred the displeasure of Sir Thomas Lucy by his poaching exploits, drives the young man to leave home. He decides to try his fortunes in London, so takes leave of Anne and his child and starts away. In London, Shakespeare views the great crowds of richly dressed people with astonishment, but he soon wins friends. The theater, of course, draws him, and outside the historic old Globe Theater he looks upon the scene of his future triumphs. The genius of the young dramatist is soon discovered by the great Lord Southampton, who becomes his generous patron and introduces him to the court of Queen Elizabeth, where he meets Raleigh, Drake, the Earl of Essex, and all the famous political and social figures of the time. The command performance of "Romeo and Juliet" in the Blackfriars Theater which is attended by the Queen and all the Court, marks the beginning of that triumph which was, through the following year, to be the great crescendo of English literature. The final stages of the film show Shakespeare in the glow of middle age. He is dreaming of his past successes, scenes from his great plays visioning themselves before him. The film closes with the fading in and fading out of the bust of Shakespeare, which is in the Parish Church of Stratford-on-Avon.
