Julie Bowen's character sets the plot in motion
Very early into the movie, it's revealed that Dan (Matt Walsh) is leaving his wife, Deanna (McCarthy), for Julie Bowen's character. But don't expect a typically antagonistic dynamic between the exes. Says Walsh: "They’ve been married for, you know, 25 years, and if you’re really going to drop that bomb, you can’t ignore that history. She’s your best friend up until that point, and so how do you land that in a way that’s disregarding that history. He is a different person, I think he’s more blind to what a dick he’s being as opposed to intentionally being mean, like, 'you’re yesterday, this is today.' It’s not that simple."
