- DirectorErnst LubitschStarsMargaret SullavanJames StewartFrank MorganTwo employees at a gift shop can barely stand each other, without realizing that they are falling in love through the post as each other's anonymous pen pal.A really beautiful film; extremely funny interplay between the leads but with also with deeply poignant moments. This is a black and white masterpiece. On one hand a dating comedy, but on the otherhand so much more.
- DirectorTerry ZwigoffStarsSteve BuscemiThora BirchScarlett JohanssonTwo eccentric best friends graduate high school and respond to a man's romance-seeking newspaper ad as a gag, only to find their lives becoming increasingly complicated.Probably the words bitter sweet come to mind most in this film. A really clever comedy; one that captures teenagers just on the cusp of the adult world. Thora Birch's and Scarlett Johansson's on screen friendship is the highlight.
- DirectorHarold RamisStarsBill MurrayAndie MacDowellChris ElliottA narcissistic, self-centered weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day.A film that knocked me back with its brilliance when I first saw it. I hadn't seen a comedy film with such a clever idea at its heart. Today it maybe a less novel idea, but its execution is brillant, and with some useful life lessons thrown into the mix.
- DirectorJohn HughesStarsMatthew BroderickAlan RuckMia SaraA popular high school student, admired by his peers, decides to take a day off from school and goes to extreme lengths to pull it off, to the chagrin of his Dean, who'll do anything to stop him.Less radical a film today, but at the time genuinely refreshing. Very likeable lead in Matthew Broderick character, and for some of the movie's setting there is a really enjoyable road trip with his friends to Chicago.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea ThompsonMarty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.A brilliant comedy, with at its heart a time travelling journey back to the fifties. Michael J Fox and Christopher lloyd are a fine comic partnership. Full of clever ideas and filmed with panache as well.
- DirectorJason MooreStarsAnna KendrickBrittany SnowRebel WilsonBeca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school's all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.A charming and very humourous film about American rival high school female a cappella groups.
- DirectorRalph ThomasStarsDirk BogardeMuriel PavlowKenneth MoreThe trials and tribulations of a group of medical students at St. Swithin's hospital in London, England.A comedy that seems to belong to a different time, but it is funny, and James Roberston Justice stars as the cheif doctor in a British 50's hospital, There is one very uncomfortable moment, that can only be described as racist. Which is a shame as it is at odds with a film that genuinely has its heart in the right place.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsMarilyn MonroeTony CurtisJack LemmonAfter two male musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all-female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.Recently rewatched this comedy about a cross dressing duo on the run from the 20's chicago mob. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are outstanding, and overall the comedy scenes are as bright and fresh as ever.
- DirectorJohn FordMervyn LeRoyJoshua LoganStarsHenry FondaJames CagneyWilliam PowellIn the waning days of World War II, the cargo officer of a Navy supply ship chafes at its role far from the action in the Pacific's backwater areas, his frustration rising when its captain denies the crew liberty over petty irritations.Almost as fine a comedy as you could wish for, with Jack Lemmon, Henry Fonda, and Jimmy Cagney! Set on a cargo vessel in the second world war, it includes one of the greatest set piece comedy scenes ever. It involves a lot of and I mean a lot of foam. There is a jarring comedy scene with sexual assault overtones, very much of its time and unacceptable today.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsDonald SutherlandElliott GouldTom SkerrittThe staff of a Korean War field hospital use humor and high jinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war.It spawned a brilliant comedy sitcom set against the backdrop of war. The Korean war in this case, but analagous to the Vietnam war. The comedy is raw, brilliant and harsh. Sometimes it goes too far in its depiction of women. Yet the message overall is anti-war, and that is obviously no bad thing.
