1. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

PG-13 | 97 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

52 Metascore

A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

Director: Leigh Whannell | Stars: Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell

Votes: 118,576 | Gross: $52.22M

First movie of the year; I watched this in preparation for Insidious: The Last key.

While the story did serve as a prequel to Lin Shaye's character Elise as a psychic and returning to the profession in order to save a teenage girl who is being targeted by demonic forces, there was a bit of bad acting from the father (Dermot Mulrooney) and just some ineffective jump-scares that took me away from the movie.

2. Chronicle (2012)

PG-13 | 84 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

Director: Josh Trank | Stars: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly

Votes: 264,442 | Gross: $64.58M

Still holds up after 6 years! Great found footage movie and directorial debut from Josh Trank as well as great performances and story that focuses on what happens when teens acquire superpowers from a mysterious source and end up screwing around with the abilities to the point where one of the characters with a sad past decides to turn to the dark side and wreak havoc.

3. Death Wish (1974)

R | 93 min | Action, Crime, Drama

51 Metascore

A New York City architect becomes a one-man vigilante squad after his wife is murdered by street punks. In self-defense, the vengeful man kills muggers on the mean streets after dark.

Director: Michael Winner | Stars: Charles Bronson, Hope Lange, Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats

Votes: 44,040 | Gross: $22.00M

I watched this in preparation for the remake starring Bruce Willis; the original wasn't so bad, slow paced and good character development and storyline that focuses on what happens when a mild-mannered man deals with the pain of the loss of his wife and daughter transitions slowly into a vigilante bent on stopping crime with consequences that come along the way with his actions.

4. The Foreigner (I) (2017)

R | 113 min | Action, Thriller

55 Metascore

A humble businessman with a buried past seeks justice when his daughter is killed in an act of terrorism. A cat-and-mouse conflict ensues with a government official, whose past may hold clues to the killers' identities.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Katie Leung, Jackie Chan, Rufus Jones, Mark Tandy

Votes: 123,291 | Gross: $34.39M

Eh...I was expecting a little bit more from this movie; Jackie Chan and Pierce Bronson both deliver great performances and there are some good action sequences, but I nearly fell asleep through the third act due to some slow pacing moments.

5. Cloverfield (2008)

PG-13 | 85 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

64 Metascore

A group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.

Director: Matt Reeves | Stars: Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller

Votes: 420,633 | Gross: $80.05M

10 years later, still one of my favorite found footage movies. Matt Reeves does excellent with telling the story of a monster attack in NYC through found footage style that inspired a whole variety of other found footage movies but still maintains the intensity and mystery of the creature's origins. Looking forward to a TRUE sequel.

6. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

84 Metascore

Rey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.

Director: Rian Johnson | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher

Votes: 671,917 | Gross: $620.18M

As a movie, this was okay. But as a Star Wars movie? Really disappointing. Luke's character as a veteran Jedi just wasn't developed well and there were forced comedy moments that lost me from time to time. While the action sequences and storyline were okay, I just couldn't see myself watching this film again.

7. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

Young hero Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure for a deadly disease known as "The Flare".

Director: Wes Ball | Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Votes: 163,349 | Gross: $58.03M

The best ending to a well-respected YA franchise; Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster (delivering one of the greatest performances in his career), and Wes Ball deliver a satisfying, action-packed, heart-wrenching finale that makes me want to rewatch ALL the Maze Runner movies.

8. The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

37 Metascore

Orbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.

Director: Julius Onah | Stars: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Brühl, John Ortiz

Votes: 113,009

Really disappointing entry for the Cloverfield franchise, didn't even feel like a Cloverfield movie, let alone have any connection to the first two entries, in my opinion. While the performances were okay, the writing was cringey, and the movie could have been better without Cloverfield references being added in.

9. Death Wish (2018)

R | 107 min | Action, Crime, Drama

31 Metascore

Dr. Paul Kersey is an experienced trauma surgeon, a man who has spent his life saving lives. After an attack on his family, Paul embarks on his own mission for justice.

Director: Eli Roth | Stars: Bruce Willis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone

Votes: 76,456 | Gross: $34.02M

Boy, I have never been more disappointed towards a remake that showed potential to be a little better than what the trailers have shown. While I enjoy watching Bruce Willis on-screen, there isn't any of the Charles Bronson element in which he struggles with the loss of his wife and his journey as a vigilante. But I will give Eli Roth credit for making a transition from horror to action.

10. Ready Player One (2018)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

When the creator of a virtual reality called the OASIS dies, he makes a posthumous challenge to all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune and control of his world.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe

Votes: 486,193 | Gross: $137.69M

After reading the book (which was great in terms of story, character development, conflict, and stakes), I enjoyed this movie a lot more: Steven Spielberg makes a great comeback after Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with his fantasy/sci-fi movies, Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke give great performances and chemistry, the action sequences and fast-paced storyline also work well!

11. A Quiet Place (2018)

PG-13 | 90 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

82 Metascore

A family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.

Director: John Krasinski | Stars: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Votes: 583,505 | Gross: $188.02M

Simple story, great direction, writing, and performance from John Krasinski, who makes a phenomenal turn from comedy (The Office) to more serious roles (13 Hours, A Quiet Place), while maintaining the suspense and thrills of the monsters detecting any kind of sound; Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe also hold their own in this interesting thriller.

Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans

Votes: 1,203,137 | Gross: $678.82M

Great ensemble cast, visual effects, action sequences, but a surprising ending in which the villain wins and is totally worth watching in the end.

13. Deadpool 2 (2018)

R | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.

Director: David Leitch | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison

Votes: 645,519 | Gross: $324.59M

While Ryan Reynolds still does great as Deadpool along with some of the newcomers (Josh Brolin as Cable, Zazie Beetz as Domino), the story lost me a bit with some humor that didn't work and was let down by a sequel that could have been a little better than what was shown.

72 Metascore

In the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers.

Director: S. Craig Zahler | Stars: Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins

Votes: 117,971

After watching Brawl in Cell Block 99, I immediately put S. Craig Zahler as one of my favorite directors to look out for in the future. He does keep the movie at a slow pace but the build-up towards the end is worth the payoff. Some good action there and then, good performances from Russell, Wilson, Fox, and Simmons, and a horrifying but thrilling end.

15. Upgrade (2018)

R | 100 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

67 Metascore

Set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when the world of Grey, a self-labeled technophobe, is turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.

Director: Leigh Whannell | Stars: Logan Marshall-Green, Melanie Vallejo, Steve Danielsen, Abby Craden

Votes: 206,782 | Gross: $11.98M

One of the best movies of the summer! Simple concept with great twists that lead to a shocking ending that pays off; Logan Marshall-Green is awesome: his transition from a technophobe to a paraplegic to a complete badass with well-filmed action sequences and humor that really works. A great Blumhouse feature!

16. Apocalypto (2006)

Director: Mel Gibson | Stars: Gerardo Taracena, Raoul Max Trujillo, Dalia Hernández, Rudy Youngblood

Votes: 331,289 | Gross: $50.87M

Brilliant writing, direction, and story about Mayan civilization and how one man fights for survival against a tribe that is in pursuit of killing his own men and family. One of Mel Gibson's greatest movies with great performances from the cast and an interesting ending that foreshadows the future of the Mayans.

17. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

R | 169 min | Drama, War

91 Metascore

Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns

Votes: 1,496,359 | Gross: $216.54M

One of my favorite war movies; great ensemble cast and action, good elements of drama involving the brotherhood of Tom Hanks's crew in finding Ryan and the tension between the soldiers about the mission, a satisfying third act with some tear jerking moments.

18. The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

R | 85 min | Horror

48 Metascore

A family of four staying at a secluded mobile home park for the night are stalked and then hunted by three masked psychopaths.

Director: Johannes Roberts | Stars: Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman

Votes: 34,690 | Gross: $24.43M

This fits in the "So Bad It's Good" category; while the first movie was considerably good, this one was BAD. Stupid character decisions and poor writing. There were only two good parts in the movie (The Pool Fight scene and the final chase scene near the end) that made this movie worth watching. No connection to the original whatsoever, and it feels like a straight-to-video flick.

19. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

R | 142 min | Drama

82 Metascore

Over the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.

Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler

Votes: 2,888,517 | Gross: $28.34M

I wanted to see what all the hype was about surrounding this movie, and to my surprise I found something really entertaining and deep about The Shawshank Redemption. Tim Robbins has an interesting journey as a man who is convicted of murder who then plans his escape out of the Shawshank Prison with the intent to redeem himself through exposing a corrupt warden. Morgan Freeman also delivers a great performance as Red, as do the other cast members (Gunton, Sadler, Bellows, Bradenburg)

Votes: 584,310 | Gross: $132.07M

6/15/18 - Rental

I'm a Tom Cruise fan when he's not doing Mission Impossible or any other action movies, and he manages to pull off a great performance as a leader of the Crime Division with a dark past but is determined to figure out why he is in the predicament that questions the future of the PreCrime division. I found the story here complex but intriguing enough to serve the film along with a few good twists and questions about free will and determinism.

21. Tag (I) (2018)

R | 100 min | Action, Comedy

56 Metascore

A small group of former classmates organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country.

Director: Jeff Tomsic | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Jon Hamm

Votes: 146,734 | Gross: $54.55M

6/16/18 - Theaters (Opening Weekend)

Was in the mood for a comedy and some action; it was a pretty good story but lost me a few times with certain characters (Helms and Johnson). I did enjoy the movie for it's heartfelt story and twist near the end, but enjoyed the action and some of the comedy.

23. It Follows (2014)

R | 100 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

83 Metascore

A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.

Director: David Robert Mitchell | Stars: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe

Votes: 268,950 | Gross: $14.67M

Had high expectations for a movie that was really hyped up to be one of the best horror movies in the future, but was a little disappointed.

The concept is bizarre but interesting (the idea of an entity stalking people after a sexual encounter), Maika Monroe shines as a scream queen in this movie (and The Guest), some good tension in dealing with the entity, but I felt the movie wasn't suspenseful enough to deliver some scares.

B

24. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

PG-13 | 118 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

70 Metascore

As Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Director: Peyton Reed | Stars: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Walton Goggins

Votes: 449,782 | Gross: $216.65M

7/9/18 - Theaters

I enjoyed this Marvel movie, Paul Rudd and Evangelline Lily have great chemistry and good action sequences, the sub-plots are well-balanced and told well, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost being a sympathetic villain was interesting and she delivered a great performance there, but there wasn't much at stake with the mission in rescuing Janet nor Ghost dying from being unable to control her quantum abilities.

B

25. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

R | 122 min | Action, Crime, Drama

61 Metascore

The drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro.

Director: Stefano Sollima | Stars: Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Merced, Jeffrey Donovan

Votes: 166,963 | Gross: $50.07M

7/10/18 - Theaters

Disappointing...but had some good elements, such as the development of del Toro's character Alejandro as a hitman to protecting Isabela from both the cartels and the agency he works for. Cinematography almost looks like something out of a B-Movie but still works. Still little action like the first Sicario, but not much tension and build-up from scenes like the Bridge shootout and when Alejandro goes face to face with the man responsible for his family's death.

26. Red Sparrow (2018)

R | 140 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

53 Metascore

Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.

Director: Francis Lawrence | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling

Votes: 201,546 | Gross: $46.87M

7/11/18 - Rental

This spy thriller wasn't bad at all! It felt David Fincher-esque cinematography and writing wise, but still holds up well with a surprising twist with Jeremy Irons's character and some good tension along the way. Jennifer Lawrence actually does great with her role as a ballerina dancer turned spy after honing away from the Hunger Games and X-Men franchises.

27. Skyscraper (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

51 Metascore

A security expert must infiltrate a burning skyscraper, 225 stories above ground, when his family is trapped inside by criminals.

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber | Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Møller

Votes: 134,102 | Gross: $68.42M

7/13/18 - Theaters (Opening Weekend)

The movie is basically Die Hard in a Skyscraper, but still enjoyable with high stakes in which Dwayne Johnson tries to rescue his family from the burning skyscraper and defeat the baddies. The action wasn't too bad, and Rawson Marshall Thurber is a considerably good director (We're the Millers and Central Intelligence were great films) who took a gradual leap from comedy to action and still delivered something fun to watch.

28. How It Ends (2018)

TV-MA | 113 min | Action, Drama, Horror

36 Metascore

In the midst of an apocalypse, a man struggles to reach his pregnant fiancé, who is thousands of miles away.

Director: David M. Rosenthal | Stars: Theo James, Kat Graham, Nancy Sorel, Nicole Ari Parker

Votes: 58,648

7/14/18 - Netflix

Movie lost me 30 minutes in; neither Forest Whitaker nor Theo James could save this movie. Had plenty of promise and was let down with a slow-paced, uninteresting atmosphere and ending that would be more of an action sequence than just leaving the characters' fates unknown.

29. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

76 Metascore

A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.

Director: Dan Trachtenberg | Stars: John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr., Douglas M. Griffin

Votes: 354,709 | Gross: $72.08M

6/11/18 - Rental

Initially I was disappointed watching this movie when it was first released in 2016, expecting a TRUE sequel to Cloverfield and NOT a spin-off.

Watching it the second time, I found it enjoyable. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher, Jr. deliver great performances, the suspense is convincing, but the build-up towards the end was a little "meh", but worked as we might be seeing more of Michelle play a part in the Cloverfield franchise. Also, a great directorial debut from Dan Trachtenberg.

30. The Breakfast Club (1985)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Drama

66 Metascore

Director: John Hughes | Stars: Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy

Votes: 436,501 | Gross: $45.88M

7/6/18 - Rental

I was in the mood for a classic, and I found this movie deep on quite a few levels: the developing relationship between five different types of characters, the way the stereotypes are covered (the outcast, the pretty girl, the bad boy, the brain, and the jock), the situations all five characters face that bring them together makes a really interesting story.
