31 Nights of Unseen Horror in October: 2017
All month long I will be watching random horror movies that I have never seen before. Now, I have seen A LOT of horror movies, so this may not go so well... I am a fan of the classics, so I will be breaking out of my shell with modern horror most of the month. Nevertheless, new or old, good or bad, any and all horror I haven't seen is up for grabs. I am allowed to quit one movie per night if it is unwatchable, but I must stick to the next choice! See you at the cinema....

- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsCarla GuginoBruce GreenwoodChiara AureliaA couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free. You walk into the movie thinking you're getting a lame "Over 50 Shades of Grey" movie but then it turns into Saw. It's a flawed but fun psychological survival thriller that is laid out like a stage play. Great performance from (INSERT LEAD ACTRESS' NAME HERE), you really get a sense of her range during the conversations with herself. I didn't know this was a King movie when I watched it, and I'm not sure if I like it less or more now that I know this.... I for sure recommend it to any fans of horror and King, although many will find it a bit heavy on the cheese.
- DirectorNick JongeriusStarsPatrick BaladiBen BattCharlotte BeaumontSeven tourists with troubled pasts find themselves trapped at a satanic mill in rural Holland. As they're attacked for their sins one by one, the night becomes a fight for survival.Movie started out really dull but once it picks up, boy does it ever. The movie is a mixture of classic slasher and psychological horror. Victims are killed based on their due Karma and the results are splendid. The movie relies a bit too much on CGI towards the end but really only on cheap fire effects. There is very little CGI blood and gore as well, which is a major plus. This slasher had a unique killer and is more intelligent than most modern slashers. I recommend.
- DirectorNicolas PesceStarsKika MagalhãesWill BrillOlivia BondIn their secluded farmhouse, a mother (a former surgeon) teaches her daughter, Francisca, anatomy, and how life and death are not to be feared. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of their family life, and deeply traumatises Francisca, but also awakens curiosities. Years later, Francisca clings to her increasingly distant father, but the trauma she sustained reawaken when her desire to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form. This is a very abstract, dark, disturbing and psychologically terrifying film. It follows a girl who lives on an isolated farm and experiences a tragedy. From then her life becomes engulfed in violence, hostage and control. This movie is much more artsy and stylized then people are used to. Think Lars Von Trier with a dash of Human Centipede 2. The look on my roommate's face when she walked in on the movie was priceless. I have not called a movie scary since I was 12 years old, and THIS is scary.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.Yes, I had yet to see the new "It" remake and..... It's half good. Seems like it was written by somebody who read sparknotes and saw the OG movie. Every character except Bill has a fundamental flaw that contradicts events in the future, individual motives and consistency. Pros: Excellent cinematography (aside from a digital camera), the cast had great chemistry and Pennywise was very good 70% of the time. Cons: They ruined Mike's character, gave his actions to others and made him the token poor black guy. Beverly is overly sexualized and becomes a damsel in distress who is awoken by a kiss. Changes are made for the convenience of the screenwriter, not for the benefit of the film. WAY TOO MUCH CGI!!!!!! 99% of the effects in this movie DO NOT need to be digital. This movie also has an extremely mediocre score. In the realm of horror remakes this is a 9/10, for an average movie it's a 7/10 and for an adaptation it's a 3/10.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMax ThieriotJohn MagaroDenzel WhitakerA serial killer returns to his hometown to stalk seven children who share the same birthday as the date he was allegedly put to rest. The final film written by one, if not the greatest horror director ever. Based on it's low rating and knowing it's a late 2000's WC film, I had low expectations. However, this movie was great! It's one of those movie that uses clichés to it's advantage and breaks rules in all the right places. Although I guessed the twist abut 25 min in, I was constantly 2nd guessing myself and enjoyed this film very much. This flick is chalk full of references from Wes Craven movies and I think it just shows how Wes was able to change with the times so well. He is the only horror director to have major influential movies in each decade that resonated with audiences. I am now going to watch the last movies of his that I have not seen this month.
- DirectorDon ManciniStarsAllison Dawn DoironAlex VincentBrad DourifChucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife. How? How is this straight to video franchise at the top of it's game right now? I was blown away by Curse of Chucky's approach of doing a fake-out remake but I did not think they would pull it off twice. Once again we follow Nica, the excellent protagonist from the last movie (Played by Brad Douriff's daughter too!) and we also see the return of Andy. Their different storylines cross paths and there are a lot of scenes that keep you guessing as to how it will all come together. I was fully satisfied with the ending and would love to see the franchise go on. Another fantastic thing about this movie was the use of practical effects. Every kill scene was real on-camera gore and never once was Chucky CGI. The fact that a low budget indie movie put forth the effort and a blockbuster like "It" didn't is very impressive. This and Curse of Chucky are the best films aside from the original.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsChristina RicciJesse EisenbergPortia de RossiA werewolf loose in Los Angeles changes the lives of three young adults who, after being mauled by the beast, learn they must kill it in order to avoid becoming werewolves themselves. An entertaining and fast paced Werewolf movie that brings Kevin Williamson with Wes Craven once again. The thing I really like about this movie is that there are multiple werewolves and its not just Christina Ricci killing people as the poster would suggest. This movie does have a lot of fresh ideas but the cast dynamic is very bland overall. It's a bit heavy on the cgi and while not fantastic looking, for being 12 years old it holds up. Probably the weakest film during Wes' later years but it is still well worth the watch and is pure WC.
- DirectorJulia DucournauStarsGarance MarillierElla RumpfRabah Nait OufellaA young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh. This is a French horror film about a vegetarian who begins to develop a taste for sweeter meats... It's a very simple yet effective story and because it's French, it is of course a beautiful, brilliant and well shot movie (I sincerely mean that). I enjoyed this movie very much but I didn't really like the explanation given at the end. Overall a really fantastic horror film that I would recommend to those looking for high-brow scares.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMaren JensenSharon StoneSusan BucknerAfter her husband dies under mysterious circumstances, a widow becomes increasingly paranoid of the neighboring religious community that may have diabolical plans for her.A Wes Craven movie from 1981. The movie is about a family being harassed by a religious sect, who believes they have brought an Incubus. I honestly expected a more campy tone but this is actually a very slow paced serious horror movie with very few fun, cheesy moments. You can tell Wes is very driven by his experience with the Methodist Church and balances supernatural fear with the oppression of religion. The mystery killer theme is similar to the Scream films and the atmosphere perfectly prepared him for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Sharon Stone has a starring role and it's great to see her take a stab at the slasher genre. I definitely recommend this movie to fans of Wes Craven but some may find it a bit dull.
- DirectorZachary DonohueStarsMelanie PapaliaDavid SchlachtenhaufenAdam ShapiroWhile studying the habits of web cam chat users from the apparent safety of her own home, a young woman's life begins to spiral out of control after witnessing a grisly murder online.I am not much for horror movies with a social media/modern technology gimmick, but damn does this movie handle it well and execute to perfection. Not only is the plot suspenseful and realistic but the acting is good too. When the movie started I began to groan at the idea of the whole thing being told through a computer screen but it was brilliant and engaging. A modern mystery slasher that deserves a spot in the horror time capsule of the 2010's.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsSteve RailsbackMathilda MayPeter FirthA race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.A Sci-Fi horror epic directed by the late Tobe Hooper. This movie is produced by Cannon films, so I expected a few more over-the-top scenes but the movie actually took itself very seriously. This is both a strength and a weakness because at times this movie does fall into "so bad, it's bad" territory and less "so bad, it's good". Nevertheless, it is a very interesting take on vampires, has a lot of creative special effects and would have been great to see in 70mm. I watched it on VHS though!
- DirectorIsaac EzbanStarsGustavo Sánchez ParraCassandra CiangherottiFernando BecerrilOn the rainy night of October 2, 1968, eight characters waiting on a remote bus station for a bus heading to Mexico City start experiencing a strange phenomenon. This is a Spanish film that is 100% an homage to "The Twilight Zone". It uses the episode where the people are trapped waiting for a bus as the base plot, then slowly threads together other themes from various episodes of TTZ. It is given a very faded color scheme where it looks like it's almost black and white but with faded color. I also rather liked that a digital film grain and tear effect was added, complete with cigarette burns for reel change! It was a fantastic throwback to the show and was very well done.
- DirectorRob LettermanStarsJack BlackDylan MinnetteOdeya RushA teenager teams up with the daughter of young-adult horror author R.L. Stine after the writer's imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware.I said ANY horror! GB sparked my early interest in horror, so I think it's appropriate to include. This is a nostalgic hodge-podge of cheap special effects, lame character archetypes and predictable storytelling. While I didn't mind Jack Black's performance, it is a very strange casting choice that i'm not 100% behind. The writing is sub-par and often feels like a dusted off script from the late 90's (which I guess makes sense???). I will admit I had fun trying to spot out characters I recognized, but this was a cheap and lifeless return to the series that I wouldn't show my own kid.
- DirectorMcGStarsJudah LewisSamara WeavingRobbie AmellWhen Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his hot baby sitter belongs to a satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet. This could have been great... the idea of a curious child discovering his babysitters cult is excellent but it's squandered with cheap, clichéd writing and poor directing. McG was an AWFUL choice to helm this project and it suffered greatly. The film's tone is all over the place, and I don't mean like comedy/drama/horror. I mean it bounces from being a true horror movie to Scary Movie 6 for a majority of the movie. This movie doesn't know if it wants to be real horror, tongue and cheek horror or just go full parody. It's a result of someone eating a great meal, puking on a page and hiring the hack from Charlie's Angels Full Throttle to paint with it.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. Now, I have seen The Thing before, but tonight I went to see an original 70mm print instead of staying at home. So I'm counting it because of the alternate 70mm magnetic soundtrack, 2.20 aspect ratio and because the film had a slight red exposure that gave it a different look, so it was a whole new experience. The red exposure was intrusive for the daytime exterior shots, but any scenes that were primary red actually looked better than the proper color correction. The red also made the gore look much juicer, lit up some of the darker areas and it popped like never before. Although the film had exposure, it was otherwise in perfect condition, which is odd. It was an excellent balance of merits and flaws that gave me a whole new experience. However, I will miss that red tone in many of the scenes when I watch it at home.
- DirectorMick GarrisStarsAnthony PerkinsCCH PounderHenry ThomasNorman Bates recalls his childhood with his abusive mother while fearing his unborn child will inherit his split personality disorder. So for some strange reason, the Psycho sequels are actually good. Well, the reason is because of Anthony Perkins' sympathetic performance as Norman Bates. This installment was better than 3, but not near as good as 1 and 2. The flashback sequences were handled well and his mother was gloriously over the top. And get this... Eliot from "E.T" plays young Norman Bates! That alone is worth the watch.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsJane LevyShiloh FernandezJessica LucasFive friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.EXTENDED CUT BABY! I love this movie and think it is the best horror remake of the 21st century. Fede Alvarez masterfully directs a great cast and commits to using practical effects and old school camera tricks. I ordered a Blu-ray from Sweden because the EC is not available in the US. Almost every gore scene was longer, there were a few extra plot points, scares and extra dialogue, an end credits scene and best of all, Mia sings "We're gonna get you". If you are a fan of this film, get it!
- DirectorBrian YuznaStarsBilly WarlockConcetta D'AgneseBen SlackAn ordinary teenage boy discovers his family is part of a gruesome orgy cult for the social elite.A demented body horror film that is an allegory for the rich taking advantage of the poor. I don't want to get into too much detail. I went in blind and was completely shocked. If you love 80's gross out horror, you will love this movie.
- DirectorJim WynorskiStarsKelli MaroneyTony O'DellRussell ToddA group of young shopping mall employees stay behind for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall goes on lock-down before they can get out, the robot security system malfunctions, and goes on a killing spree.A fun, yet conventional 80's horror flick about a group of teens who decide to stay overnight at the mall where the new security robots are keeping watch... Yeah, that's about it. Fairly bland and forgettable characters, but there are a lot of great lines and kills.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMichael BeckBeatrice StraightLaura JohnsonCorporate exec Miles Creighton dies, and is cryogenically frozen in the hopes that he can be revived. 10 years later, the procedure is a success, and Miles returns--without his soul. This is an incredibly duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllllll tv movie from the master of horror, Wes Craven. I am not even going to provide a synopsis because I will fall asleep. I can't even appreciate the style because it just doesn't feel like Wes. He was simply a hired director looking for a gig. This is all the more bothersome when you think about the fact that this was the very next movie he did after Elm Street! New Line must have screwed him big. Even if this gets a remastered Blu-ray release, skip it! I always thought Vampire in Brooklyn was his worst movie, but this could give it a run for it's money.
- DirectorRupert JulianLon ChaneyErnst LaemmleStarsLon ChaneyMary PhilbinNorman KerryA mad, disfigured composer seeks love with a lovely young opera singer.I saw this at a theater with a live Organ score and it was fantastic. The film's sets are extremely impressive and it is surely one of the greatest silent movies ever made. The cinematography is excellent and the movie is creepy, entertaining and sometimes funny. FEAR ERIK!
- DirectorBigas LunaStarsZelda RubinsteinMichael LernerTalia PaulA controlling mother uses telepathic powers to send her middle-aged son on a killing spree.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DON'T READ THE SYNOPSIS OR ANY FURTHER DETAILS ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!! This film is meant to be seen (in a theater) with no preconceived notions whatsoever. Just let momma hypnotize you and watch it, it is one of the most captivating horror movies I have ever seen. Without a doubt the most under rated horror movie of all time as there is very little internet buzz or a cult following.
- DirectorEric RedStarsJeff FaheyLindsay DuncanKim DelaneyAfter losing his arm in a car accident, a criminal psychologist has it replaced with a limb that belonged to a serial killer.A 90's horror flick about a serial killer who's donated limbs have started influencing people to kill.... This is a fairly decent flick for the 90's and requires some major suspension of disbelief.
- DirectorStefan RuzowitzkyStarsFranka PotenteBenno FürmannAnna LoosA cute med student starts a summer course at Heidelberg University. David's on her dissection table. She met him the day before on the train. Something's wrong.A brilliant German film about a secret society of Doctors who reject the Hippocratic oath. They kidnap and kill people to display in their anatomy classes. It's a frightening and well executed 2000's horror movie that has the feel of a 70's Giallo at times.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsRachel McAdamsCillian MurphyBrian CoxA woman is kidnapped by a stranger on a routine flight. Threatened by the potential murder of her father, she is pulled into a plot to assist her captor in a political assassination. This is another of Wes Craven's later films and this may be his best of the 2000's. The tension is well crafted and the single setting with intense dialog between teo people is very hitchcockian. As good as it is, it's not really AMAZING. There's nothing wrong with it really, it just doesn't have that major wow factor. Similar to many of Hitchcock's other great but inferior films. Well worth the watch.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia MonrealeA young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.COMPOSER'S CUT! I've seen this many, many times but tonight I got to see the "Composer's Cut" with Fabio Frizzi and his band performing an expanded soundtrack live during the film. The band was extremely talented, Fabio went back and forth between a keyboard and guitar the whole show. Fantastic evening.
- CreatorMatt DufferRoss DufferStarsMillie Bobby BrownFinn WolfhardWinona RyderWhen a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.Ok, I know this isn't a movie but come on! It's the premiere of Stranger Things 2! And since they are going with a direct sequel title and it's every Steven Spielberg/Stephen King movie crammed into one, I'm counting it! Part 2 is a welcome follow up to a show that I truthfully am not the biggest fan of. I love the characters and the nostalgia, but it rides so much on the success of other movies that it becomes too predictable. Part 2 is able to break away from the 80's mystery origin clichés and begins to develop the lore in more original ways. It's biggest fault is that it has further diminished the quality of part 1.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsLinda BlairLee PurcellJeremy SlateA teenage girl's life is turned upside down after her cousin moves into her house, and as time goes by she begins to suspect that she may be a practitioner of witchcraft.Wes Craven's 3rd film, first TV movie and first use of 35mm. It's a classic tale of a strange family member moving in with a protagonist who doesn't trust them. It won't please most Craven fans, but for a 70's TV movie, it is very good. The performances are made for TV but the directing and cinematography is top notch. This is not one of those Craven TV movies where he is phoning it in as a hired director, his style is ever present and makes this rare film worth the buy. Check out the new Blu-ray release with audio commentary. RIP WES!
- StarsTim FerranteTed GeogheganMichael GingoldThe third compilation of movie previews from Garagehouse Pictures is an unprecedented, chronological exploration of the history of horror from the 1980s, featuring the scariest, goriest, and craziest trailers from the era. With over 250 trailers (including many red band favorites) and a running time of nearly 7.5 hours, this is by far the most ambitious and comprehensive trailer package ever assembled.Breaking the rules once more with this MASSIVE collection of classic Grindhouse trailers from the 80's. I have watched 5 hours of some of the greatest trailers ever and still have 2 and a half to go! I recommend getting this and playing a few before you watch horror movies. Everything from Criterion level classics to B-horror schlock is in this collection and it is an essential buy for any true horror fan. I swear I don't work for a dvd company or anything! LOL. This really is amazing!
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsMatt PassmoreTobin BellCallum Keith RennieBodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one suspect: John Kramer, the man known as Jigsaw, who has been dead for over 10 years.Somehow this franchise was still able to breathe after all these years. While this is an overly convenient and nonsensical film, it was a lot of fun and muuuuuch better than The "Final" Chapter. I am definitely not clamoring for more Saw films, but I don't regret seeing the newest installment.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMatthew LabyorteauxKristy SwansonMichael SharrettAfter his friend is killed by her abusive father, the new kid in town attempts to save her by implanting a robotic microchip into her brain. The final film of the month will be the last Craven movie on my list. This is a really fun and kooky movie that could be Frankenstein meets Terminator. Lots of laughs, great characters and I unintentionally chose a movie that features Halloween! Best of all, this is the film that features the famous basketball exploding head meme. I very much enjoyed this film and can't wait for next year! HAPPY HALLOWICKED!
