- DirectorGregory RatoffStarsDon AmecheJanet BlairJack OakieFollowing three flops in a row, Broadway stage producer Willard Samson is told by wealthy divorcée Donna Davis that she will finance a show but only if she is the star. The fact she can neither sing, act nor dance does not deter Samson. His press agent, Ken Douglas, lives in a theatrical boarding house run by his friend from vaudeville, Larry Martin, where he meets Jeanie Maxwell, singing teacher and aspiring songwriter from, of course, Altoona, Pa., who has come to New York to sell her songs. Samson is not interested in her songs as much as he is her stage abilities, but he can't get rid of Donna. Ken is also plugging for Samson to use the vaudeville acts, living at the boarding house, who can't get work because there is no more vaudeville, despite the fact that some of the acts are examples of what killed vaudeville in the first place. The show appears to have potential, with the exception of Donna, when Ken convinces her she is the perfect "outdoorable girl" for a publicity campaign and takes her to the countryside. Samson frames them as being dangerous counterfeiters and they are arrested by the country sheriff, and Samson rushes Jeanie into the star role for the final dress rehearsal. But Donna is released from jail, returns to the show for opening night and it is a miserable flop. Jeanie returns to Altoona, Samson goes on a drunken binge and Ken tries to save the show by convincing Donna into quitting.N+2/ Don Ameche, Janet Blair, Jack Oakie

After Prima's manager, Marty Moran, brusquely informs them that Prima is busy on the day of the bazaar, Dorothy, angry at getting the "brush off," confronts Prima with her request. When Marty rudely dismisses her once again, Dorothy waits in the lobby for the audition to end. After having run through a disappointing roster of singers, Prima apologizes to Dorothy for Marty's behavior and agrees to entertain at the bazaar. Bolstered by Prima's appearance, the bazaar raises over $3,000 for the summer camp. In gratitude, Dorothy invites Prima to dinner, during which she introduces him to her devoted young brother Buzz. When a neighbor drops by to ask Dorothy to babysit, Dorothy sings the infant to sleep, impressing Prima with her sweet voice. While washing the dishes, Dorothy hums a tune, prompting Prima to offer her the vocalist job, but she refuses. The next day, when Dorothy goes to the theater to ask Prima to join the church fund-raising committee, Marty insists that she sing before Prima gives her his answer. When Prima begins to coach Dorothy during her audition, the band breaks into laughter and Prima realizes that they have created an irresistible comedy routine. As Dorothy achieves prominence with the band, Buzz begins to feel neglected. One night, Buzz sees Prima kiss Dorothy and reacts with a jealous tantrum. Consequently, when Prima proposes to Dorothy, she turns him down and announces that she is leaving the group to spend more time with Buzz. When Prima asks Father Burton for advice, the priest suggests that he try to make friends with Buzz by taking him on a hike. After Prima enlists the band to join them, Buzz begins to reconsider his opinion of Prima. As they hike up the mountain trail to an old resort, they discover that a fence has been erected to block their path. When Buzz wistfully gazes past the fence and describes the pond and other facilities at the resort, Prima decides to lease the land and turn it into a year-round camp for the children. Through a series of fund raisers, Prima and the others raise the $30,000 needed to lease the resort, and after they exceed their goal, Dorothy finally accepts Prima's proposal.N+4/ Louis Prima, Keely Smith
- DirectorDel LordStarsPhil HarrisEddie 'Rochester' AndersonLeslie BrooksAs house painters Newton H. Newton and Phil Burton remodel the Club Monterey on Broadway, owner Gibley auditions acts for his club's reopening. Theatrical agent B. Templeton Jones brings his client, aspiring singer Ann Stuart, to try out for a spot, and when Gibley doesn't hire her, Ann becomes discouraged. When Phil, who has watched Ann perform from his ladder, enters a dressing room and tries on a suit from the costume rack, Ann mistakes him for one of Gibley's partners and asks his help in winning a contract. Phil sympathizes with Ann, and when she runs off stage, he follows her, trips and hits his head. After Phil awakens in a hospital room and discovers that he is suffering from amnesia, his physician, Dr. Gardiner, dubs him "John Doe" and suggests he return to the Club Monterey, where someone might recognize him. While seated at a table in the club, Phil begins directing the band, giving Gibley the idea to launch a publicity campaign exploiting Phil as an amnesiac band leader. Gibley's angle proves a huge success and Phil becomes a hit. When Newton rescues Phil from a group of adoring fans one day, the band leader hires him as his bodyguard. Although Phil reminds Newton of his old painting partner, Newton believes that his new employer really is a band leader. Now employed as a hat check girl at the Club Monterey, Ann checks Jones's hat, and when she recalls her earlier meeting with Phil, the agent informs Gibley. Recognizing a good publicity angle, Gibley decides to promote Ann as Phil's fiance and hires her to sing in the club. Ann protests the ruse, but when reporters descend upon her and demand the name of her fiance, she claims that he is George Drake from Buffalo. When Dr. Gardiner encourages Ann to continue the deception to help Phil's recovery, she agrees and soon finds herself falling in love with the band leader. Upon returning home from a date with Phil one evening, Ann finds Edwin, her former beau from Buffalo, waiting for her in the lobby. When Edwin demands an explanation for Ann's alienation of affection, she invites him to her room and tells him the whole story. Unknown to Ann, Phil is just outside her door, and when overhears her tale, he thinks that Ann doesn't love him and leaves, dejected. Later Phil tells Newton about Ann's story and announces that he plans to quit and leave town. Newton finally realizes that the band leader really is his former painting partner and hurries to Dr. Gardiner for advice. In Newton's absence, Phil disappears and Ann, feeling responsible for his misery, refuses to perform. After tracking Phil to the train station, Newton convinces two police officers to arrest the band leader for stealing a suit and deliver him to the Club Monterey. At the club, Jones tries to persuade Phil that Ann is in love with him, but when Phil refuses to believe the agent's story, Newton hits his old friend over the head with a brush. The blow brings back Phil's memory, and after he sees Ann, he remembers meeting her as an aspiring young singer, and the two embrace.N+4/ Phil Harris, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson

Enlisting the help of her neighbor and would-be boyfriend Howard Barnes, Susie writes a stack of fan letters and asks her relatives from around the country to post them. When R. N. Swanson, the owner of the local radio station, receives a deluge of letters in praise of Don, he hires the singer to appear on a radio spot.
