Miguel's Self-Discovery in Coco
This latest Pixar movie was a homecoming to the type of filmmaking and storytelling that we've grown to cherish and demand from the animation studio in past years. Like the best of Pixar movies, Coco turned the mirror back on us and forced us to think about our own lives and, in this case, our own families and traditions. In Miguel, the movie's music-loving protagonist, Pixar creators and writers captured the richness of Mexican culture and the universal mixture of hope and fear everyone shares about who they are and what they will become. Miguel's journey isn't entirely unpredictable. But that's OK. We all take a circuitous route to our own truth, even if ours isn't as beautiful and as richly decorated as Miguel's journey to the Land of the Dead.
