After a global casting search that reportedly included nearly 1,000 candidates, Chinese actress Liu Yifei has won the lead role in the live-action adaptation of Mulan. Disney is planning a 2019 release of the period movie, in which a young woman disguises herself as a warrior in order to save her father. The actress, who has previously starred in blockbuster Chinese films such as Ip Man 3, grew up partly in New York. The original 1998 film, which grossed $304 million worldwide, featured the voices of Ming-Na Wen and Eddie Murphy. However, the musical elements of the animation are not expected to be carried over into the live-action version.
