'The Fast and the Furious' Name Game
The titling of the movie The Fast and the Furious (2001) and why there are no numbered franchise sequels to the first installment is an interesting story. Producer Neal H. Moritz was having difficulty choosing between the proposed titles: Racer X, Race Wars, Redline, and Street Wars. Moritz turned to Roger Corman, the producer of the film, The Fast and the Furious (1954), for help. Corman suggested using the title of his film and negotiated the rights to use the title. In the deal, Moritz exchanged stock footage Corman needed for the right to use the title once, but Corman retained the right to make numerical sequels in the future (e.g. 'The Fast and the Furious 2'). Which explains why the franchise sequels, instead of being an iteration of the first installment's title, were titled 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Fast & Furious (2009), The Fate of the Furious (2017), or another variation.
