Charlie Cox Teases "Daredevil" Season 2 — Exclusive2 of 4
Daredevil and The Punisher butt heads spectacularly from the first episode. Tell me about those two characters who are in such direct opposition while still being cut from similar cloth.
What was interesting is when we were doing Season 1 — this is before we had any idea that there was ever a chance we would do a second season, and certainly before even the idea that Frank Castle would enter this world — Steven DeKnight, the showrunner from the first season, and I would talk. We would talk about this idea that Matt Murdock in this show is one bad day away from being Frank Castle.
So, this year, I knew immediately that this was going to be a very, very interesting dynamic. On the one hand, you’ve got Matt, who I think would love to be able to vilify Frank Castle from the moment he becomes aware of him. I think he’d love to be able to think of him in the same way he thought about Wilson Fisk — that he’s a bad guy, he needs to be brought down, he needs to be brought to justice.
Then what becomes evident from that is that other people don't actually feel that way, and that actually people kind of make comparisons between Frank Castle and Daredevil. And that actually, they’re very similar. Suddenly, it dawns on Matt — to his horror, I think — that they are as you say, they’re potentially cut from the same cloth. And that they probably have more in common with each other than there are differences.
