- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future. One word, perfect! Showcasing the city of stars— romance-filled with arts and music, La La Land’s superb story-telling propounds love and passion in the era of adversity and begginings. Characters, location, directing, the music was on point making it a regret not for this film to win at the Oscars 2016.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.Brutal, honest and perplexing one-of-a-kind film made for audiences to question everything they see as the story plays out. Convincing steady pace, Jennifer Lawrence became one kind of a phenomenon with her believable acting.
- DirectorBradley CooperStarsLady GagaBradley CooperSam ElliottA musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.Genuinely sentimental and tattoos a spot in a soft heart. This music-filled quest to a person's development over the careers they face in life embeds a spot as the characters make you love themselves more. Identifies itself as its own. Unique. Emotional. Heartfelt.
- DirectorJae-young KwakStarsJun Ji-hyunJang HyukKim Soo-roThe heart-warming romance story between Kyungjin and Myungwoo. Even though he has passed away, he will be always with Kyungwoo forever. The drama-romantic-comedy film deals with Korean-themed humor usually seen in their films. Nevertheless, the film was an ok. Symbolic and deals with personal issues and epiphanies.
- DirectorStephen ChboskyStarsLogan LermanEmma WatsonEzra MillerCharlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.A perfect coming-of-age teen film— characters were enticing and magnetic. Stephen Chbosky’s story-telling shines out as you, the viewer, feels with the character. A definite fave forever!
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsRachel WeiszMark WahlbergSaoirse RonanCenters on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family - and her killer - from purgatory. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. The mysterious film develops an unexpected symbolic change that plays out kinda well. Characters were ok, though the acting seems off and the scenes are unconventional and questionable, the film is still a must-see as it imparts valuable lessons.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.A comedy that you shouldn’t underestimate. The glitzy life-ish film hustled the art of story writing and humor. In a film that doesn't try hard drama, romance, comedy and interest. Recommendable!
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Horrifyingly extraordinary, this shocking goose-bumps intensifying film dwells on how you, as a viewer, is completely oblivious to the story. A gut-clenching shocker!
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.Something that feels relatively intimate, Lady Bird is a quirky film that has its screenplay at point exhibiting Greta Gerwig's staple odd charismatic story-telling. Recommendable for coming-of-age film lovers!
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsGreta GerwigLola KirkeShana DowdeswellA lonely college freshman's life is turned upside-down by her impetuous, adventurous stepsister-to-be.Mystifying. It's an awe to make such characters that you- at this film- once in a lifetime experience. Lines explicitly bring laughter during spontaneous situations, a surprisingly good adventure seeking self in the bustling streets of New York. The characters that revolve around the story are interesting and definitely adds up to the fire. Greta Gerwig is a genius.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsMichael KeatonZach GalifianakisEdward NortonA washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.A thrill. Birdman, with its atypical sense in all forms, didn't fail to bring out the light in its dark depressing theme. Birdman traversed the simplest plot but with incredible execution. Birdman is an experience in its own form. Bravo!
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsSally HawkinsOctavia SpencerMichael ShannonAt a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity.Speechless. Deviant. The film exudes perfectly both the individual’s strange sense and enigmatic presence. A romantic-art film for all ages. Guillermo Del Toro truly is a master in his own type of art.
- DirectorCharlie McDowellStarsMark DuplassElisabeth MossTed DansonA troubled couple vacate to a beautiful getaway, but bizarre circumstances further complicate their situation.A still. Turnouts of events are crazy and shocks you but with simplicity and genuine script-writing contexts. One of my low-key favorites.
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.Poignant story-telling matched with a theme that tackles modern issues with Joaquin Phoenix's exquisite portrayal and Spike Jonze's effortless emotional essential story-telling. One of the top films I surely recommend and it's close to heart.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.Gives you a complete experience of how hard it is to be a striving musician. Its premise was one of a kind. Though one comment, the film didn’t make me feel the progression, but I guess that’s good somehow. The film didn’t have a major event or something monumental that adds up parts to the movie’s sum.
- DirectorDavid LoweryStarsCasey AffleckRooney MaraMcColm Cephas Jr.In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife.Spirit-budding soft story-teller that touches my heart and relaxes my mind with deep-provocative messages and scenes. Must-watch before I die!
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend. From the first moment, this psychological film has you hooked with its characters, staple music scoring and basically the whole gist of the story— which is in totality, a lot and each of them had a significant theme. Full of unexpected twists and turns and extravaganzas. Truly magnificent, nothing like I've ever seen before.
- DirectorAgnieszka SmoczynskaStarsMarta MazurekMichalina OlszanskaKinga PreisIn Warsaw, a pair of mermaid sisters are adopted into a cabaret. While one seeks love with humans the other hungers to dine on the human population of the city.Something no one, I say- No one, had ever seen before— this eerie fantastic musical brings goosebumps and thrills into each frame by frame. Story and visuals fairly plausible. Deeply chilling!
- StarsJang Keun-sukIm Yoon-ahOh Seung-yunLove Rain is a story which takes place in two time periods, the first is in the 1970's which tells the love story of two university students Seo In-ha and Kim Yoon-Hee. After a series of events the couple are separated. The time is then moved forward to 2012 where the story revolves around Seo Joon, the son of In Ha and Jung Ha Na the daughter of Kim Yoon-Hee. Joon and Ha Na then fall in love but In-Ha is still in love with Kim Yoon-Hee, unknowing that their children are in love In Ha then attempts to track down Kim Yoon-Hee for the first time in thirty years.Nostalgic. The feeling of first love, friendship, and youth. This psychedelic romance Korean drama had strong points: its incorporation of the old cinema, the sensibility of the characters and emotional connection, the turnout of events and most notably the music and most most notably its story. Love Rain is totally one of my favorites!
- DirectorJoel FerrerStarsEnchong DeeJanine GutierrezVictor AnastacioBert is quick-witted but an emotional guy who falls in love with Elise who is a strong and independent woman. They separated to pursue their studies only to meet again when they grow up.The premise of the film was unclear. The execution was what made it seem okay. It's remarkable for being culturally funny, the actors did an OK job. Exquisite ending.
- DirectorIce IdananStarsAlessandra De RossiJay GonzagaPepe HerreraA series of mysterious hand-illustrated postcards take a young woman on a journey throughout the Philippines in search of its anonymous writer. An amazing journey. The film had me waiting for the end and the film, though has quirks, managed to feel heartfelt. Brava!
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.Watching it for the second time on the big screen, La La Land— truly is more than the sum of its parts. Every moment was enjoyable and the film ended with me wanting more. It didn’t feel like it was an hour of two!
- StarsShinnosuke MitsushimaTao TsuchiyaMinami Takayama29-year-old Satoru Fujinuma is sent back in time 18 years to prevent the events leading to his mother's death, which began with a series of kidnappings while he was in 5th grade.Engaging and mysterious. Childhood friendships touch me the most and since it's of sci-fi genre, I am appalled of this anime series. This is what you should be introduced to if you tend for light story-driven anime.
- DirectorRob MarshallStarsRenée ZellwegerCatherine Zeta-JonesRichard GereTwo death-row murderesses develop a fierce rivalry while competing for publicity, celebrity, and a sleazy lawyer's attention.A weird satisfying 21st century female powerhouse movie. Sit back and relax as you enjoy each theatrical performance brought into frame. Everything goes well as it is, nothing can be said except for an advice— lay off the caramel.
- DirectorGreg MottolaStarsMichael CeraJonah HillChristopher Mintz-PlasseTwo co-dependent high school seniors are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry. Not bad for a teen comedy film. Made me laugh, chuckle and think. Superbad is a film of its kind, actors are excellent in giving the audience pure joy and the ex-machinas in the movie are such a delight as it brings discomfort and nothing but pure comedic trance to critics and audiences alike.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Tarantino's dialogue and iconic dance scene, everything about this film is legendary. Explains why film geeks love this. It's eccentricity and timing and sequencing to how it's told. You can't not escape this film if you love cinema.
- DirectorNathan GrenoByron HowardStarsMandy MooreZachary LeviDonna MurphyThe magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.Captivating. This film is perfect for all kinds of seasons and yes terrific enough for an animated film. Truly exceeded everything I ever hoped for. There's so much to say about this film: from the fresh story-telling and concept about a staple fairy tale princess. Somehow exudes reality and desire to be out of the shell. You feel as a viewer, to be entranced and be a part of Rapunzel's desire and ambitions/goals. What also to note is the perfect combination of Mandy Moore's entrancing voice acting and to match Zachary Levi's cool persona. Soundtrack is the best, if anything exceeds the best then that would the proper word to describe! The perfect animated film, a need to be watched by children and children at heart.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.A splendor of the 2016 cinema. Moving storyline and favorable characters, must-note the visual effects and overall cinematography and acting. Thought-provoking and essential messages throughout. A personal favorite!
- DirectorKevin LimaStarsAmy AdamsSusan SarandonJames MarsdenA young maiden in a land called Andalasia, who is prepared to be wed, is sent away to New York City by an evil Queen, where she falls in love with a lawyer.Deserves to be called a classic. Amy Adams' role as Ella is timeless. Though made for a kid audience, the live action film had essential characters which everyone could impart a lesson from. Ending may feel a bit of a stretch but the good part though is the creative output to mix animation with live action and start from there what reality and fantasy means to people and have people actually encounter them.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.A warming sense of adventure and seismic story-telling. Moana displayed passion, determination in dynamic with Maui, a kid-friendly self-ambitious but inherently selfless character. Films have good but a bit too fast pacing. "How Far I'll Go" can stand alone as a good song which the film underwhelmingly showcased. In totality, the film has good themes, presumed wonderful soundtrack and inherent plot.
- DirectorMark AndrewsBrenda ChapmanSteve PurcellStarsKelly MacdonaldBilly ConnollyEmma ThompsonDetermined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.Bravery knows no gender or roles, and love is family too. Merida as a young protagonist becomes a strong remarkable model for viewers telling them to break stereo-typing and the importance of family. A story-telling no match for others, the film is an animation to remember from the 21st century.
- DirectorWilliam CottrellDavid HandWilfred JacksonStarsAdriana CaselottiHarry StockwellLucille La VerneExiled into the dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, a princess is rescued by seven dwarf miners who make her part of their household.Charming— this important masterpiece set foot for the world to see how inanimate objects move and it clearly did so well. Beautifully hand-crafted, Snow White failed to give at least somehow a moral context but teaches positivity and kindness. But undeniably succeeded in external aspects beyond that!
- DirectorClyde GeronimiWilfred JacksonHamilton LuskeStarsIlene WoodsJames MacDonaldEleanor AudleyWhen Cinderella's cruel stepmother prevents her from attending the Royal Ball, she gets some unexpected help from the lovable mice Gus and Jaq and from her Fairy Godmother.Empathy and magnificence in one film that is recognized by all ages. Cinderella is one of Disney's ambassadress from its turn to sparkly and glittery animation, the story offered more depth and connection. It will stay where it is right now and will always be known.
- DirectorLes ClarkClyde GeronimiEric LarsonStarsMary CostaBill ShirleyEleanor AudleyAfter being snubbed by the royal family, a malevolent fairy places a curse on a princess which only a prince can break, along with the help of three good fairies.Magical. Defined more of Disney's artistic ability in its era. Shifting more to Snow White, the appearance of a magical villain Pacing is not easily ingested, I didn't notice it was the climax already and sooner I knew it was the end. The climax was not emphasized well, I don't what to feel about this film.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsJodi BensonSamuel E. WrightRene AuberjonoisA mermaid princess makes a Faustian bargain in an attempt to become human and win a prince's love.Fairly enjoyable. Not kid-appropriate to be the least. Ariel's motivation was selfish and was just sheer curiosity. Does not evoke any value on audiences and has a shallow representation of love. Addictive soundtrack though and visualizations!
- DirectorGary TrousdaleKirk WiseStarsPaige O'HaraRobby BensonJesse CortiA prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.Intellectual role model that imbues a great message of acceptance. Did well on the execution, on its characters and its story. Belle will always be one of the best Disney princess no doubt.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsScott WeingerRobin WilliamsLinda LarkinA kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.Imaginative and new. Aladdin is one Disney film you must not miss! Literal on-point, nothing more could be said, nothing less.
- DirectorTony BancroftBarry CookStarsMing-Na WenEddie MurphyBD WongTo save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.
- DirectorMike GabrielEric GoldbergStarsMel GibsonLinda HuntChristian BaleAn English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth century Virginia.Powerful. The theme and the time in which the story was set was revolutionary and evocative. The film's narrative aspect is a total victor.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsAnika Noni RoseKeith DavidOprah WinfreyA waitress, desperate to fulfill her dreams as a restaurant owner, is set on a journey to turn a frog prince back into a human being, but she has to face the same problem after she kisses him.Moving. Uplifting theme told in a sentimental story, especially about the black culture and generally a person's hardship. Princess Tiana's backstory made one of Disney's relatable and inspirational characters.
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJonathan GroffFearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. What could you say more about an insurgent film that's loved by many? From it's creative visual aesthetics, connective storyline and such compelling soundtrack; yes.
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. An obstructive turned to an accepted protagonist with an adorable side-kick, which gave the viewers two stories— altering from each other that made the film, not boring. The theme being the video games and references is a thumbs up!
- DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotSix years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph," Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure. If it wasn't for the references, I wouldn't have watched this. Wasn't anything different (following the first one), and its problem was spurious. Overall, enjoyable to watch!
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.To be the first film of the franchise, Iron Man is a risk-taker; and it didn't fail to be one. The film's premise didn't compromise at all anything about Tony Stark as an effective main character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But instead demands change and emotional connection as the movie brings you along to a realization to what is desired to what is needed.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsEdward NortonLiv TylerTim RothBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper. It's just good, that's it. It didn't seem at all charismatic. If not for well-executed action scenes this film would go into the drain; well that's for the standard if you're a Marvel franchise.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Mickey RourkeGwyneth PaltrowWith the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy.Digging to Tony Stark's egocentric persona, Iron Man 2 leaves a valuable lesson. Marvel's writing skill was undoubted. Pepper was lovely too!
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsChris HemsworthAnthony HopkinsNatalie PortmanThe powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.Somewhat generic but simultaneously hilarious puns. The focus was indeed in Thor and you get to fall in love with everyone in the film. Though the directorial approach wasn't appealing.
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsChris EvansHugo WeavingSamuel L. JacksonSteve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.Triumphant. As this film ignites viewers to feel dignity along with it, it travails to be one of the prominent characters in the Marvel universe.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.Blockbuster. The story was overshadowed by the light that the cast possess. Ran by running jokes, comedic trances, good action scenes, and a simple goal; in the end it made a good, impactful important film in the cinema— at least at the box office.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. The most intense action in a final installment of a hero franchise, gives an exciting feeling due to heavy fight scenes and concludes who and what Tony Stark has become. And leaves more for who he will be.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.Isn't that significant. The story didn't shock me as much and I just wanted the film to end. There is no chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman and neither does their characters.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier.Fast-paced. I know Marvel stans love this film, but I would've love to see more gradual progression.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.Naturally comedic. It's a go-to film for people who are interested and not in Sci-Fi films, especially the Marvel franchise. The combination, overall occurrences, and relief defined a classic.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.Advocative. Inserting major problems, circumstances, and certainties, this film exceeds well in both displaying awesome film action scenes, making you fall in love with the franchise and its characters; and urgent story-telling.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.Hilarious to the bones, formidable story-telling, marvelous execution! The sequel didn't fail to match up with its predecessor in coming up with a fresh, bold, unique, comedic of course, and most importantly close to the heart production along with the great sum of teamwork and effort among its main cast.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela.Hilarious! But that would be it. The performances and the story did underwhelmingly. It’s a waste of brilliant acting, that the filmmakers exchanged for being a comedy film.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.A definition of what superhero films has come to be: entertaining, realistic, imaginative and powerful. Resemblant to real-life people, Ant-Man with its amusing antics will be an ode to real-life dada and superheroes making this little brittle subtle and powerful insect one of the most important, at least relatable, characters in the MCU franchise. And that’s a fact!
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsKirsten DunstCharlotte GainsbourgKiefer SutherlandTwo sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.Deep and intellectual, this psychological art bears viewers to think differently in regards to normal circumstances. Portraying unorthodox characters in a symbolical film, Lars von Trier's a person to watch out for in this age of cinema.
- DirectorMamoru HosodaStarsRebecca HallDaniel Dae KimJohn ChoA young boy encounters a magical garden which enables him to travel through time and meet his relatives from different eras, with guidance by his younger sister from the future. You can’t expect that this film would be more than what it seems— which is like a standard for a Japanese animated film. First, what goes through the imagination of both animators and storytellers deserve an applause. Second, the story is new and exciting, but relatively close to reality by showcasing the quirks and a story of a family. Told in an unconventional way, Mirai makes an emotional turn and heartfelt ending. Must-watch for anyone looking for dramas, families, quirks, and good Japanese-animated films!
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsKotaro DaigoNana MoriTsubasa HondaSet during a period of exceptionally rainy weather, high-school boy Hodaka Morishima runs away from his troubled rural home to Tokyo and befriends an orphan girl who can manipulate the weather.Heart-wrenching, progression and personal storyline of each individual and the whole premise are to be noticed and be commended for. Sharing similar attributes with Your Name, incorporating the universe, the world and young love, Weathering with You, in its own kind, is emotional story-telling. Pace can go a bit rough, but the characters are well-meant and likeable. One of its standing ovation comment, with its well use of visuals and sound, and all-throughout, is that one scene in the climax that made my goosebumps have goosebumps.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsWill SmithMena MassoudNaomi ScottAladdin, a kind thief, woos Jasmine, the princess of Agrabah, with the help of Genie. When Jafar, the grand vizier, tries to usurp the king, Jasmine, Aladdin and Genie must stop him from succeeding.More like a tribute than a film itself. Massoud's performance is uncanny; also the visual effects and setting. The new “A Whole New World” is bad and other songs too. They could've used a better villain though.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. The addition to Ari Aster's nightmare-inducing world turned daylight to dark. Literally gave new meaning to scaring the daylights out of you. Fans of Hereditary may feel welcomed as they return to a somewhat very familiar territory. But for those who are new to Ari Aster's artistry, prepare for an emotional and pyschological driven film. Let the festivity begin.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.Lovely. Dialogue-driven long one-night stand drives me amazed to how much new heights storytelling could achieve. I forget everything and focus on the moment. Brings chick-flick to Oscar-worthy. Yeap.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyVernon DobtcheffNine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour. You're excited as soon the movie starts. Jessie and Celine catch up with each other and you're there caught up until sunset if they'll be given a second chance, a second try.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpySeamus Davey-FitzpatrickWe meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna. The film did not hesitate to jump right into an age far from where we left Celine and Jessie. Seeing the characters evolve to more mature individuals was refreshing but still certainly homely. Just like the previous films, the script feels absent as the leads gave a realistic take to what realities of a growing, failing, and learning couple looks like.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardRuby ModineA college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity. If Groundhog Day and Halloween had a baby, this would be it. A surprise gem from a plethora of slasher films. This film could have been a disaster but was redeemed by an engaging performance by Jessica Rothe. Fun and thrilling. As it should be. A new life begins in watching the film, broadening one’s perspective about choices and life. Take time to think things, in taking chances and living the moment— as they happen only once.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardPhi VuTree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.A clever and eccentric follow-up that manages to be a different film on its own rather than an another version of its predecessor. Jessica Rothe was tantalizing as ever together with a returning and new set of cast that serves as an additional toppings to the cake. Ridiculous and unreasonable at times but it fits the context. Not a scarier follow-up but definetly a crazier, funnier, and a more satisfying surprise.
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJosh GadAnna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom. The film tied up all the loose-ends of the story of the first one and resulted in an acceptable sequel of one of the most iconic family-sung animated movies of the generation.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsJesse EisenbergEmma StoneWoody HarrelsonA shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting bruiser in search of the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters striving to get to an amusement park join forces in a trek across a zombie-filled America. The film revived a dying genre by utilizing the same formula of Shaun of the Dead but becoming its own type of one-of-a-heck comedy action adventure. The choice of narrative story-telling and making its own ‘thing’ through the rulebook traversing and explaining the world a little more further made the audience be attracted more to the film. It possesses the modern feel-good progression, with you wanting more, and enjoying every scene through normative hilariousity and applausive out-of-the-box antics, you don’t expect from a gorey zombie film. It focuses more on each the character’s development and story through the world they were set on. This showed the brilliance that the actors possess in both comedy and acting, with a ‘lil bit of action.’ That’s three birds killed, so it’s time to nut up or shut up.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsWoody HarrelsonJesse EisenbergEmma StoneColumbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock move to the American heartland as they face off against evolved zombies, fellow survivors, and the growing pains of the snarky makeshift family. It’s not the gore actions that made the film, rather the characters quirky exchange of dialogues and the little moments that made the characters shine. As told by the film, “Rule No. 11: Enjoy the little things.” The individuality and unique loveable identities the characters have make up for a plausible sequel. Though it might feel as a jam-fill of ideas for plots, it still pulled off to give reasonable progression and emotional connection that barreled in the final act. Definitely a double tap on five stars. No pun intended. It’s a good you-want-to-watch-the-next-installment film. Its combination of actors brilliance in both acting and comedic timing that made Zombieland a box-office franchise.
- DirectorAbe ForsytheStarsLupita Nyong'oAlexander EnglandJosh GadA washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids'-show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies. An unexpected adventure with rays of sunshine and, ughh— blood. This Lupita Nyong O powered film is a welcome addition to an already excruciating genre. Prepare to get a stomach ache. From laughing and gut-twisting imagery. From slaying ‘Tay-tay’ and killing ‘zom-bays.’
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsMilla JovovichMichelle RodriguezRyan McCluskeyA special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. It takes the whole film to understand the premise. Even that, it isn’t boring, but instead is assertive and well informative of the world that set the pace for future Resident Evil films, with the right amount of action of course. It’s pace is okay; you have to understand the music score though, and the film entitles residents to confusion from start but blindly be aware of truly who and what’s evil, in the fictional and real world. Spoiler: it is personal interest. You have to get used to killing characters close to heart. So that’s two spoilers for a film, which is a first in my review.
- DirectorAlexander WittStarsMilla JovovichSienna GuilloryEric MabiusAlice wakes up in the Raccoon City hospital after the area has been overrun by zombies, and must now make it out of the city before a nuclear bomb is dropped.I thought, "Oh better than the first one!" Its a great follow-up story-wise and visually is different from the first one. It is a step up if you're watching the franchise from the start.
- DirectorRussell MulcahyStarsMilla JovovichAli LarterOded FehrSurvivors of the Raccoon City catastrophe travel across the Nevada desert, hoping to make it to Alaska. Alice joins the caravan and their fight against the evil Umbrella Corp. The aesthetic and setting of the story is something else! The action were dope too. The zombie storyline gave the movie a different type of thrill, and the group dynamic amplifies that. And that's about it.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsMilla JovovichAli LarterWentworth MillerWhile still out to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation, Alice joins a group of survivors living in a prison surrounded by the infected who also want to relocate to the mysterious but supposedly unharmed safe haven known only as Arcadia. The way they followed up the story is fair. The action scenes though are impeccable. It's mind-bending, cinematic, and exciting.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsMilla JovovichSienna GuilloryMichelle RodriguezAlice fights alongside a resistance movement to regain her freedom from an Umbrella Corporation testing facility.First sequence was over-the-top! Then the film felt flat after, I didn't know where it was going but it just seems like they wanted to try out some action scenes with 3D technology.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsMilla JovovichIain GlenAli LarterAlice returns to where the nightmare began: The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.Seeing Alice's journey in the hands of authoritarians, the last installment of the franchise served a vengeful victory for the protagonist.
- DirectorJill CultonTodd WildermanStarsChloe BennetAlbert TsaiTenzing Norgay TrainorThree teenagers must help a Yeti return to his family while avoiding a wealthy man and a zoologist who want him for their own needs.A hard rocky-start pass. But the climax part up till the ending was satisfying. Shady on excluding Philippines from the map though.
- DirectorMichel HazanaviciusStarsJean DujardinBérénice BejoJohn GoodmanWhen George, a silent movie superstar, meets Peppy Miller, a dancer, sparks fly between the two. However, after the introduction of talking pictures, their fortunes change, affecting their dynamic. It's like the first time again I watched a film. A telling of the life of an artist whose old habits die hard, and whose story you'd cry for. Magnificent ending.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.Effortlessly one of the most intriguing films of the year— the century! Parasite starts off as a typical Korean comedy then became deep and socially aware. Masterpiece.
- DirectorOlivia WildeStarsKaitlyn DeverBeanie FeldsteinJessica WilliamsOn the eve of their high-school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.Ah, yes. Coming-of-age suburban-setting films, about best friends who try to change their lives one last night. Though it is appealing, I'd consider this film admissible though its high score-rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm not an expert, but the motivation was lacking, and development also. Fun adventures though. Cute ending.
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsYalitza AparicioMarina de TaviraDiego Cortina AutreyA year in the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.The real meaning of emotion captured by cinema. Told in black-&-white picturesque, in vintage time, Cleo's story captivates audience as she silently-effectively shapes how acting becomes one with nature.
- DirectorGabriel MariñoStarsLucía UribeRoberto MaresOlivia LagunasA middle-class girl who embarks on a road trip across Mexico.“Hidden gem” and easily one of my favorites. Quiet films tend to grow on you as shy spunk characters progress their journey and happenings tell their story. I'm awe-struck.
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsAdam DriverScarlett JohanssonJulia GreerNoah Baumbach's incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.Johansson's and Driver's undeniable performance tagged with Baumbach's writing and directing talent really makes one of the most grounded-to-life cinema and a real-telling of a marriage story.
- DirectorMikhail RedStarsKelvin MirandaVance LarenaKhalil RamosA socially awkward teen bonds with a group of misfits who plot to abduct the schools arrogant rich kid until their kidnapping scheme turns deadly.Proves as ‘promising’ at the start but fails flat. Though this is a leap for Philippine digital cinema, for leaving an imaginative tell-tale story based on real-life. Scenes doesn't suit the mainstream, good. But it doesn't conclude well enough. But I was enthralled. Larena's role as Blanco was haunting. Give him more serious roles and he'd be a well-received actor.
- DirectorAndrew HaighStarsCharlotte RamplingTom CourtenayGeraldine JamesA married couple preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary receives shattering news that promises to forever change the course of their lives.Tell me something I don't know. That this hurt so much. As much as Katya's mystery, how the characters react makes me forget that they are on their 60's. Pace is good. Story? Performance? Perfect.
- DirectorCéline SciammaStarsNoémie MerlantAdèle HaenelLuàna BajramiOn an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.Mysterious and cinematic. The setting and its story is captivating though slow-paced.
- DirectorTodd HaynesStarsCate BlanchettRooney MaraSarah PaulsonAn aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York. The gay Titanic, except it cuts off once they got on the ocean. It's a classic, it's sweet, it's subtle, it's Carol.
- DirectorMatthew DiamondStarsDemi LovatoJoe JonasMeaghan MartinAt a music camp for gifted teens, a popular teen idol overhears a girl singing and sets out to find who the talented voice belongs to. What he doesn't know is that the girl is actually a camp kitchen worker with a fear of being heard. My epoch. The film that gave us the iconic “This is Me” and introduced us to Demi's cheeky wide smile. It appeals widely to kids to accept who they are.
- DirectorPaul HoenStarsDemi LovatoJoe JonasNick JonasMitchie is back with her friends at Camp Rock, ready to perform music, dance and have a good time. Her "boyfriend" is there as well. A new camp has opened across the lake, creating an atmosphere of competition or feud.Better than the last one! Glad Mitchie had development, which Lovato obviously pulled, and the story was running for them all. Much better performances (very HSM-like), and soundtrack. The film just screams excitement and talent. I'd watch this film over and over again in a heart-beat. It's on!
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.Gripping, compelling, and believable. Mystery-thriller-comedy films like this shouldn't be paid dust.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDean-Charles ChapmanGeorge MacKayDaniel MaysApril 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.Glorious. 20 minutes in and you're already concerned for them. What a production, ain't it? I commend the effort and planning it must've took. It paid well. I love how it started and ended.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsRoman Griffin DavisThomasin McKenzieScarlett JohanssonA young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.Irony isn't my cup of tea, but this is an exception. First I thought, this is acclaimed? Then later I understood why. Humor is highlighted, then emotion, then shot-heart commentaries. Best re-telling of the Nazi society. Even if I just saw this one.
- DirectorFrank OzStarsMatthew MacfadyenPeter DinklageEwen BremnerChaos ensues when a man tries to expose a dark secret regarding a recently deceased patriarch of a dysfunctional British family.Hilarious? Yes. Touching? Absolutely! This has got to be one of the best British comedy films ever made. The story, execution, and actors. From the first bit, then to continuous running jokes and attention-catching shenanigans. The ending speech will be always with me, he really did give an unforgettable speech!
- DirectorGiuseppe TornatoreStarsPhilippe NoiretEnzo CannavaleAntonella AttiliA filmmaker recalls his childhood when falling in love with the pictures at the cinema of his home village and forms a deep friendship with the cinema's projectionist.A cinematic masterpiece embedded in time and history.
- DirectorMike MillsStarsEwan McGregorChristopher PlummerMélanie LaurentA young man is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer and that he has a young male lover.Creative dialogues and bits are truly remarkable. The story, told not in a logical way, is focused on a young man's story to finding life and love. The cast & characters did a great job!
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsBill MurrayScarlett JohanssonGiovanni RibisiA faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo.I didn't feel like I was watching a film, they seemed like real people. Everything synchronized in real-time, from the quintessential portrayal of the actors, and the happenings. Loved the ambiguous stuff!
- DirectorBen PalmerStarsLake BellRory KinnearKen StottA single woman takes the place of a stranger's blind date and finds the perfect man for her.Bell is precious here. And so does Kinnear's bright warm acting that builds the chemistry for the two characters and make you gush over mid-life love. Story's brilliant, along with very fitting funny jokes. You really don't know what's waiting for you here.
- DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsElisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet DyerWhen Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.Nerve-wracking. It started off straight to the point, and paced up quick from there. Never failed to shock me. Moss's acting for horror is to note for. Cinematography's awesome as did the music scoring that hyped the whole film up for me.
- DirectorSeverin FialaVeronika FranzStarsRiley KeoughJaeden MartellLia McHughA soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events take place. It's quite a thrilling memorable film. Released in the time of plot twists and dysfunctional relationships, The Lodge sets up trauma and executes it through refreshing / gut-wrenching series of events.
