The quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who's introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance.
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves
Votes: 993,083
Words cannot describe the joy I feel when watching this. I used to watch Jeremy Brett and thought that was pretty good- and then I was rather spoilt with Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock, and didn't think the character could get any better. But damn you Moffat, you got me again! By teaming up with Gatiss and using the combined powers of Benedict Cumberbatch (what a name!) and Martin Freeman, you have created something I have (whisper it) enjoyed MORE than Doctor Who!
2. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi
The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor and his companions from planet Earth.
Stars: Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Smith
Votes: 245,661
Doctor Who was a small part of my childhood. I always thought the show was quite creepy (THAT hasn't changed) and Sylvester McCoy's Doctor was a strange little man. As much I liked Paul McGann's Doctor the movie was not really Doctor Who to me, so when the new series was announced in 2005 (with Billie Piper no less) I had doubts it'd be any good. And then the Doctor told Rose to run for her life and the theme tune began and I haven't missed it since!
3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis
Votes: 870,426 | Gross: $303.00M
It has half the cast of Sherlock in it, as well as calling (siren song like) half the cast of its predecessor. So of course I'm looking forward to this. But hurry up and get back to Sherlock and Wilfred please!
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean
Votes: 1,998,719 | Gross: $315.54M

5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom
Votes: 1,776,682 | Gross: $342.55M

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom

So depressing. But so good. A level of epicness not seen to often on screen.

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, Dorian Brown Pham
Votes: 44,310
A weird one. But I like weird. Is Ryan insane? Dead? In a coma?! (It's like Lost and Life On Mars all over again. Only with a horny, weed smoking man dressed as a dog. Or dog that speaks very good Australian :))
8. Stargate: Atlantis (2004–2009)

Votes: 211,914 | Gross: $24.15M
I love James Bond. But this is the "real" world of espionage, all in the name of Queen and Country. And it is a nasty business.
But it does have Benedict Cumberbatch.

Votes: 207,927 | Gross: $51.09M
MARTIN FREEMAN!!
Douglas Adam's masterpiece is (for me) almost unreadable after the first book. But this movie, made posthumously but with a lot of input from its creator, gives you the gist of his work. Doctor Who's Death in Paris is another piece..

Considering it's not, the art work is better then some of Disney's efforts form the same era. Just look at the animation of The Great Owl, or the rats world under the rosebush and you'll see what Disney were missing!

Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols
Votes: 92,432
This includes (almost) every iteration of Star Trek, including the new movie- which I felt captured the spirit of the Original Series down to Karl Urban's brief possession by DeForest Kelley performing his trademark disbelieving eyebrow movement (TM).

Now this is the sort of thing kids are missing out on nowadays! Proper stories. Not this X-Factor rubbish!
This really is an enchanting adaption of the books- it would be dated by today's standards, but I've been disappointed by newer adaptions that looked better.

Apart from Star Trek (2009) there were two other movies I wanted to see that year. I thought I would really enjoy Inglorious Basterds and suffer through District 9- and unknown actor/director with only Peter Jackson's name behind it?

This I loved.
