- DirectorRob ReinerStarsWil WheatonRiver PhoenixCorey FeldmanA writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.Brilliant coming of age film. Captures the innocence and curiosities of childhood in a way that can only be described as warming and perfect. Short and sweet, easy going film to watch on a chilled afternoon.
- DirectorStephen ChboskyStarsLogan LermanEmma WatsonEzra MillerCharlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.Another coming of age film that draws all the correct feelings and emotions from the audience. The soundtrack for this film is one of my favourite of all films. Plus, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller and Logan Lerman in one film; What more could you want?
- DirectorJim SharmanStarsTim CurrySusan SarandonBarry BostwickA newly-engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.An awesome compilation of songs and concepts I would never have thought about on a normal day. Definitely a good evening film with sing along opportunities too.
- DirectorAmy BergStarsJason BaldwinDamien Wayne EcholsJessie MisskelleyAn examination of a failure of justice in the case against the West Memphis Three.I've followed this story for a few years and to hear that this was being made was a very exciting thing for me to hear. Filled with the true facts of the horrors of the 18 years of false imprisonment. I can back this up by saying that Damien Echols, one of the prisoners, assisted in the making of this documentary.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsJames CaanKathy BatesRichard FarnsworthAfter a famous author is rescued from a car crash by a fan of his novels, he comes to realize that the care he is receiving is only the beginning of a nightmare of captivity and abuse. This was one of the best horror novels written by Stephen King, and the best movie based on a horror work. Annie Wilkes, the number one fan, is the worst nightmare of every celebrity, or every individual who has ever been stalked. An author gets in an accident, but is “rescued” by an obsessive fan. Kathy Bates is exceptional as Annie Wilkes, and one of the most convincing movie psychopaths of all time.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppHelena Bonham CarterAlan RickmanThe legendary tale of a barber who returns from wrongful imprisonment to 1840s London, bent on revenge for the rape and death of his wife, and resumes his trade while forming a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett.I loved the time era that this was set in and the music fits in with the eerie mood throughout the film. Helena Bonham Carter is brilliant in this next to Johnny Depp. The soundtrack from this is one of my favourites of film soundtracks.
- DirectorDanny DeVitoStarsDanny DeVitoRhea PerlmanMara WilsonA girl gifted with a keen intellect and psychic powers uses both to get even with her callous family and free her kindly schoolteacher from the tyrannical grip of a sadistic headmistress. My all time favourite of films from my childhood (next to Harry Potter). Mara Wilson is one of my favourite child actresses and this is even funny for older people too, not just kids.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstWillem DafoeAfter being bitten by a genetically-modified spider, a shy teenager gains spider-like abilities that he uses to fight injustice as a masked superhero and face a vengeful enemy.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsMarilyn MonroeTony CurtisJack LemmonAfter two male musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all-female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.My al time favourite film for a great evening in. Completely Hilarious and no wonder it's rated number 1 on the American Film institute's list of Comedy films. A must for absolutely everyone!
- DirectorStephen DaldryStarsThomas HornTom HanksSandra BullockA nine-year-old amateur inventor, Francophile, and pacifist searches New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.I had to buy the DVD after watching this and I've seen it quite a lot of times since. Very touching and thought provoking film and story line, one of which many others would agree to be an inspirational and emotionally-challenging film.
- DirectorElissa DownStarsRhys WakefieldLuke FordToni ColletteAll Thomas wants is a normal adolescence but his autistic brother, Charlie, thwarts his every opportunity. Will Thomas, with the help of his girlfriend, Jackie, accept his brother?Very, very, very realistic vision as to what to expect from this level of Autism. And I say this from experience. It kind of pick an emotional string on my heart as I could relate this to my younger sister who has Down's and has been in many of the same situations included in this film.
- DirectorCathy RandallStarsDanielle CatanzaritiCassandra JinmanTalia MonaghanA coming-of-age story about a 13-year-old girl trying to fit into both a posh private school and an ordinary public school. Many lessons to learn from this. I had to watch it 3 times and really fell into the concept of the film and it's ideas. Great actors in this too.
- DirectorJessie NelsonStarsSean PennMichelle PfeifferDakota FanningAn intellectually disabled man fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer the value of love and family. This was so close to home and that's why it's in this list. I remember recommending this to everyone I met for at least 2 months after watching it as the entire concept was just very powerful and moving, even causing a few tears to be shed at times.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJack BlackMike WhiteJoan CusackAfter being kicked out of his rock band, Dewey Finn becomes a substitute teacher of an uptight elementary private school, only to try and turn his class into a rock band.Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Just Epic. Got me into the rock world. I watched this first when I was around 9 and have never stopped raving about how it kind of changed me - my music taste - and how the songs were so catchy and easy to pick up after only hearing them once. Great film for kids as well as teenagers.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsRobert Downey Jr.Jude LawRachel McAdamsDetective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsSissy SpacekPiper LaurieAmy IrvingCarrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom. This film, particularly this version, was one that I only needed to watch once to fall in love with. The sad and tragic storyline draws sympathy from many audience members and whilst watching this, I remember thinking how much I wanted to help the main character which proved the film's persuasiveness.
- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsDaniel RadcliffeRupert GrintEmma WatsonAn orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world.A massive favourite of mine since I was a small child. I vividly remember rewinding the video tape and watching it over and over with awe and excitement. Brilliantly made with a set of sequels matching it's predecessor.
- DirectorAte de JongStarsPhoebe CatesRik MayallMarsha MasonA young woman finds her already unstable life rocked by the presence of a rambunctious imaginary friend from childhood.I absolutely loved this a few years ago as it was extremely relatable. Sad at the end, though. :(
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.
- DirectorStanley DonenGene KellyStarsGene KellyDonald O'ConnorDebbie ReynoldsA silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood.Great for a girls night in, upbeat, classic, great music and happy mood. Positive, light hearted comedy.
- DirectorHal AshbyStarsRuth GordonBud CortVivian PicklesYoung, rich, and obsessed with death, Harold finds himself changed forever when he meets lively septuagenarian Maude at a funeral.A perfect cult fim, brilliant storyline, quirky, one I won't forget. Definitely a dark comedy by many rights.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.A perky comedy, very accurate to the comics. The comics are awesome - READ THEM! There are only six anyway :)
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.
- DirectorKimberly PeirceStarsHilary SwankChloë SevignyPeter SarsgaardA young man named Brandon Teena navigates love, life, and being transgender in rural Nebraska. This is truly and completely and honestly in my top five favourite films EVER. I've never stopped thinking about this film and it's heart-piercing message. This is the only film that has gripped on to my life and has opened my mind to just some of the troubles and insecurities of people with Gender Identity Disorder that I was previously unaware of. A DEFINITE film to watch. I don't think I could go through life without having watching this film, I just couldn't.
- DirectorRoger SpottiswoodeStarsStockard ChanningShane MeierWendy CrewsonOpenly gay college student Matthew Shepard (Shane Meier) was murdered in an act of a hate crime with a senseless violence and such cruelty that attracted global attention. His death has changed the whole world forever.A Touching, saddening, sickening story of how some complete strangers still feel they reserve the right to judge others and perform the most evil and cruel acts to a person they didn't even know for more than an hour. Shows how Homophobia is still an issue for some ignorant, unaccepting, closed minded people.
- DirectorMimi LederStarsKevin SpaceyHaley Joel OsmentHelen HuntA young boy attempts to make the world a better place after his teacher gives him that chance.Inspirational, heart breaking, except the ending seemed a little too staged for me. Even so, the concept behind the film is one that should be emulated by many of us in the world today. Morally, this is a genius film.
- DirectorLarry PeerceStarsMel HarrisDwight SchultzAshley PeldonA pastor and his wife adopt a brother and a sister, but the girl has terrible outbursts of rage. They get her in treatment and try to find out the reason for this. This wasn't so much one of my favourite films but the historical context behind it was extremely touching to me. The subject of Attachment disorder is one that's fragile and has had many treatment attempts yet it still remains one that never completely leaves the child. Powerful mood throughout film.
- DirectorStephen DaldryStarsKate WinsletRalph FiennesBruno GanzPost-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.Beautiful. Just beautiful.
- DirectorMark RomanekStarsKeira KnightleyCarey MulliganAndrew GarfieldThe lives of three friends, from their early school days into young adulthood, when the reality of the world they live in comes knocking. The book was fantastic and although this doesn't quite live up to it's expectations, it was a pleasure to watch and the actors did a great job :)
