1. The Last Stand (2013)

R | 107 min | Action, Thriller, Western

54 Metascore

The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.

Director: Jee-woon Kim | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro

Votes: 145,261 | Gross: $12.05M

The Last Stand, I will say Arnold Schwarzenegger is back! Still kicking butt. Now the movie itself could've been a whole lot better. Not saying it was bad though. I did enjoy it, I was hoping for more of a big fun action packed film like the Expendables and well it didn't become that until the second half of the film. Most of the action you already watched in the trailer so when a big action scene came on during the movie you've pretty much watched it a few time already. But it was still entertaining, an ok action flick, and of course Schwarzenegger's still got it.

2. A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

R | 98 min | Action, Thriller

28 Metascore

John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.

Director: John Moore | Stars: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Votes: 214,965 | Gross: $67.35M

I enjoyed this film as an action film but not so much as a Die Hard film. It did have some ok action scenes, and it had a fair amount of humor, I also really enjoyed the car chase scene although I think they put it in the movie a little too early in my opinion. I personally think it failed as a Die Hard film, one being the story didn't focus enough on John McClane. I will admit I did enjoy this film better then Live Free or Die Hard though. My advice, watch this film just as an action film and you'll probably enjoy it much better.

3. Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

51 Metascore

The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy

Votes: 146,896 | Gross: $65.19M

I loved this movie. I really wasn't expecting much from it, but it turns out it was way better then I thought it would be. Now it isn't perfect and the film does have its flaws, personally I wish that the film would have spent more time in the Giants Kingdom. But all in all its a fun film the whole family can enjoy, and one of my personal favorites this year. Its a film that you shouldn't think to much about when watching it, just sit back and enjoy it.

4. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

41 Metascore

The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

Director: Jon M. Chu | Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Lee Byung-hun

Votes: 187,244 | Gross: $122.52M

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is an ok film. It has better action then the first and I thought Dwayne Johnson was a great addition to the cast as was Bruce Willis although I wish they would've used him more. The story unfortunately never really went anywhere and Snake Eyes who I thought was awesome in the first film, I found to be a little disappointing in this one. But hey the film is still enjoyable and action packed.

5. Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

R | 119 min | Action, Thriller

41 Metascore

Secret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett

Votes: 292,139 | Gross: $98.93M

Best action film I've seen so far this year. I'll admit the story is one that has been seen multiple times before, and the cgi isn't anything great, but besides that the film was awesome. The acting was pretty good, Rick Yune was great as the villain, and Gerard Butler kicked butt. I highly recommend this to action movie fans.

6. Iron Man Three (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 898,326 | Gross: $409.01M

First off I didn't like the first two Iron Man films, this I also didn't like. It was in my opinion the best in the series, it had the best action, and the most humor. But I just didn't enjoy it. I think the film should've taken itself more seriously and it should've been more like the trailer. Also yes I did find The Mandarin to be a big disappointment. I watched this film once and thats good enough, I don't care to watch it again.

7. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 496,870 | Gross: $228.78M

I like this movie. I was never really a Star Trek fan I'll admit, I haven't watched any of the original films, and I've probably only seen one or two episodes of the original t.v. show. I still have to say I really like J.J. Abrams Star Trek films. Personally I like the first Star Trek (2009) better then this one, Into Darkness is still a great film. It has some great action and awesome spacial effects, the acting was great especially from Benedict Cumberbatch who I thought was brilliant in his role. I recommend this film for anyone who is a fan of Star Trek, and I recommend it to those who like me where never really in to Star Trek.

8. After Earth (2013)

PG-13 | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

33 Metascore

A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Jaden Smith, David Denman, Will Smith, Sophie Okonedo

Votes: 208,803 | Gross: $60.52M

After Earth is not as bad as people make it out to be. True its nothing spectacular and it could of been way better. Its far from M. Night Shyamalan's best films, but its also far from being his worse. I think that the film took itself too seriously instead of just being a fun film. The cgi was ok (still better then Twilight) as was the action. The acting was also ok, Jaden Smith needs some work and Will Smith has done better acting. I still enjoyed the film, and I still think M. Night Shyamalan is a great director.

9. World War Z (2013)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

63 Metascore

Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale

Votes: 718,653 | Gross: $202.36M

World War Z was awesome. One of the best Zombie movies I've seen. In my opinion its feels like your watching The Walking Dead more then Dawn of the Dead. It keeps you at the edge of your set and brilliantly blends action, horror, thrills, drama, and just a little bit of humor. This has to be the best Brad Pitt movie since Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I really hope for a sequel. This is one of the better films of the year in my opinion.

10. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 811,261 | Gross: $291.05M

I have to say that I have a ton of likes and dislikes about this film. First off, the action sequences are just flat out amazing. I mean I would watch this movie again and again just for that I mean wow! The cgi is good as is the acting. I think this could be director Zack Snyder's comeback. The origin story was enjoyable and the writing by David S. Goyer was great. There are tons of other great things about this film that I'm not sure if I can name them all. Unfortunately there is a bit of bad in my opinion. First off the flashback sequences in the first half of the film. I am not a fan of flashback sequences and though sometimes they can help a movie for this film I don't think it did. Also I know I said the the acting was great which it was, some of the actors/actresses were not best for the part. Like Diane Lane, she is a great actress but I didn't really like her as Martha Kent. I will also say that I wasn't a big fan of Henry Cavill's Superman. He did a good job but not great. Of course I am someone who believes that Christopher Reeve's Superman is the best one. I am fine with Henry Cavill as Superman and will look forward to seeing him in future sequels. All in all this was a great film with a few flaws but great none the less. I would recommend it, its one that I will be adding to my Blu-ray collection. It is also the best action movie (beating out Olympus has Fallen) as well as the best superhero film so far this year.

11. Despicable Me 2 (2013)

PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

When Gru, the world's most super-bad turned super-dad has been recruited by a team of officials to stop lethal muscle and a host of Gru's own, he has to fight back with new gadgetry, cars, and more minion madness.

Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud | Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove

Votes: 425,613 | Gross: $368.06M

First off I didn't really want to see this I only watched it because I had to take my little sister to it. I wasn't a fan of the first one so I didn't expect much from this, and truth be told I did enjoy it better then the first one. It was a lot funnier and more entertaining then the first one in my opinion. I really liked the villein in this also, ever time he was on screen I couldn't help but laugh. Of course the Minions were also pretty funny especially when they are singing. But I still thought that the film was kind of dumb, but kids and fans of the first should enjoy it.

12. The Lone Ranger (2013)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Adventure, Western

37 Metascore

Native American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 244,367 | Gross: $89.30M

The Lone Ranger was enjoyable. It wasn't anything spectacular, it was just a sit back and don't think kind of movie. It has some pretty decent action scenes, as well as plenty of funny ones. Johnny Depp steals the show as Tonto, and Armie Hammer was ok as Lone Ranger. There was a few scenes where I was thinking yeah right no one could survive that, and the plot was far from great. Its also pretty violent for a Disney film and may not be the best film for younger children, but for the most part its a good family film. Don't expect something like Pirates of the Caribbean. You might be disappointed. Instead sit back relax turn your brain off and enjoy the film for what it is.

13. Pacific Rim (2013)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

Votes: 530,323 | Gross: $101.80M

I have been looking forward to this movie ever since I found out it was being made. I was also my most anticipated film of 2013, and it was awesome. It was visually stunning (oscar worthy), the action was amazing, the Kaiju were cool, the Jaegers were cool, the characters were likable, the film was just plan awesome. Of course the film does have some flaws like the plot which there wasn't much of, the film has a few slow parts, there is a plot hole or two, and the acting isn't the greatest. I did however think that Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman did great jobs. Plus Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are hilarious and give some much needed comic relief. The plot which in my opinion was close to none existent didn't really bother me being I only wanted to see the Jaegers and Kaiju fight and that is exactly what I got. The movie is very entertaining especially in 3D. Its a great popcorn flick, mindless fun, and I highly recommend it. I have one more complaint though and and there is a slight spoiler I'm about to say, the film had Ron "Mr. Flat Out Awesome" Perlman in it and yet they don't put him in a Jaeger to fight. I mean he does have a scene where he does something awesome, but its not in a jaeger. I was really hoping that he would just show up in his own personal Jaeger to kick some Kaiju butt.

14. Grown Ups 2 (2013)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy

19 Metascore

After moving his family back to his hometown to be with his friends and their kids, Lenny finds out that between old bullies, new bullies, schizo bus drivers, drunk cops on skis, and four hundred costumed party crashers sometimes crazy follows you.

Director: Dennis Dugan | Stars: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade

Votes: 169,203 | Gross: $133.67M

Grown Ups 2 is nowhere near as good as the first. In my opinion the first one was funny and had a little bit of heart, this didn't really have any heart, it was just an unnecessary sequel that tried desperately to be funny throwing in any joke or bit of slapstick humor they could find. That being said I still enjoyed it. I was rolling throughout, it really is a funny movie in a dumb way. Honestly the film is stupid and not needed but was still enjoyable nonetheless. Its not the funniest film around but its good for a few laughs. Its just dumb fun.

15. The Wolverine (2013)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

Wolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima

Votes: 491,658 | Gross: $132.56M

The Wolverine was awesome but not perfect. I liked the storyline to this film and thought that it was a darker and more gritty look at Wolverine. I enjoyed the action sequences especially the one on top of the bullet train which was amazing. I also loved the shots of Japan's cities as well as the shots of the houses. The film does move slow at some parts and I didn't think that the fight between Wolverine and Silver Samurai was all the great. I also wish that Silver Samurai had more screen-time. The film is still very good, way better then Iron Man 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine but its not as good as the other X-Men films. But fans of Wolverine should throughly enjoy it, it is one of the better films of the summer.

16. Riddick (2013)

R | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.

Director: David Twohy | Stars: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollà

Votes: 177,840 | Gross: $42.03M

After 9 years of waiting we finally get another Riddick movie and I was not disappointed. The movie was awesome, it was action packed, it had decent special effects, an ok storyline, and plenty of humor. Of course the movie does have its flaws unfortunately. I found the beginning to be a little slow, and in my opinion it took a little too long to get to the action. Also when it does get to the action it seems to go by a little bit too fast. I also think that the filmmakers tried way too hard to get an R rating and in my opinion it hurt the film. Some of the violence seemed a bit over done, there are a lot of f-bombs as well as a bunch of other words and most of the time the use of these words seemed forced and not natural, and then there is the nudity which had absolutely no point whatsoever. It does nothing for the story, it doesn't do anything to develop the characters, it was absolutely pointless. But other then all that the film was still awesome, very enjoyable as well as entertaining, and its one that Riddick fans will love. Its not as good as Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick but its still a good film and a worthy addition to the series.

17. Carrie (2013)

R | 100 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

53 Metascore

A shy girl, outcast by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother, unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Director: Kimberly Peirce | Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday

Votes: 148,098 | Gross: $35.27M

I not going to lie, this was better then the original in my opinion. I am not a fan of the original Carrie made back in 1976, I thought it was boring, uninteresting and very slow. This one on the other hand was in my opinion fairly well paced, more interesting, and a lot more entertaining. I will admit that I liked Sissy Spacek's portrayal of the titled character a little better then Chloe Grace Moretz's portrayal although both are good. Spacek in my opinion portrayed Carrie as more of a tragic and misunderstood character who was pushed to the limit and lost control. Moretz's portrayed Carrie as a less tragic character who was also pushed to the limit, but I felt that she had complete control over her powers and was using them for revenge. But aside from that its actually a good movie, defiantly one that you'll like or hate when compared to the original.

18. Escape Plan (2013)

R | 115 min | Action, Thriller

49 Metascore

When a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside.

Director: Mikael Håfström | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent, Vincent D'Onofrio

Votes: 257,266 | Gross: $25.13M

I'm a big action movie fan as well as a big fan of both Stallone and Schwarzenegger. When I found out that they were going to do a big action film together I was excited. Unfortunately the film was not as action pack as I had hoped. Don't get me wrong its an ok movie and definitely worth a watch, there is just not as much action as you would expect from these two action movie legends. I do think that both Stallone and Schwarzenegger had fun making this film and it was nice watching these two real life friends playing off of each other. If your looking for a decent action flick then this is the perfect film for you, if your expecting something like Expendables then your probably going to be disappointed.

19. Free Birds (2013)

PG | 91 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

38 Metascore

Two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history, and get Turkeys off the Thanksgiving menu for good.

Director: Jimmy Hayward | Stars: Woody Harrelson, Owen Wilson, Dan Fogler, Amy Poehler

Votes: 25,981 | Gross: $55.75M

This was another film I took my 8 year old sister to see and I have to admit it wasn't half bad. Its not great but it was enjoyable. It is defiantly a kid friendly film that is perfect for the whole family. Its also good for a few laughs. My sister loved it and like I said I enjoyed it.

20. Ender's Game (2013)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind.

Director: Gavin Hood | Stars: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin

Votes: 253,742 | Gross: $61.74M

First off this isn't really like the trailer. There wasn't very many space battles between humans and aliens, in fact its no where near as action packed as the trailer makes it out to be. But for the most part its actually a pretty good movie. The special effects are great as well as the acting although there was a time or two that I thought the acting could've been better. The film does move at a very slow pace, it's running time is close to two hours but it felt much longer. But for the most part its not that bad of a film, could've been better but still pretty good.

21. Thor: The Dark World (2013)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

54 Metascore

When the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.

Director: Alan Taylor | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 724,390 | Gross: $206.36M

If you are wanting a darker plus action pack superhero movie then Thor: The Dark World is for you. The film was pretty interesting as well as creative. I also really liked that the film took place mostly in Asgard and the other nine realms over being mainly on earth. Unfortunately plot wise the film does fall a little flat. I also felt that the chemistry that Thor and Jane Foster had in the first film had disappeared in the film. I also was not a fan of the villein, he was very forgettable. I honestly forgot all about him whenever he wasn't on screen. There also wasn't enough Loki in the film. Despite all this it was still a very enjoyable film, not the best superhero film I've seen this year but its still better then Iron Man 3.

22. Gravity (2013)

PG-13 | 91 min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

96 Metascore

Dr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.

Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris, Orto Ignatiussen

Votes: 862,693 | Gross: $274.09M

This movie was amazing, the acting was great, the visual effects were great, the camerawork was great, everything was great. I highly recommend watching this in 3D otherwise you will be missing out on so much. One of the best films of the year if not the best.

23. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

PG-13 | 161 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

66 Metascore

The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott

Votes: 704,571 | Gross: $258.37M

Ok so I hated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I mean it was one of the worst films of 2012 if not the worst. So I didn't have very high expectations for this film. But thankfully it was better the the first. It's still no where near as good the the Lord of the Rings trilogy but in my opinion it does make up for last years disappointing Hobbit movie. The action in this was much better in my opinion plus I was actually surprised with the design of Smaug and I'll admit he was a pretty cool dragon. But I still think that the CGI was pretty bad especially the climax of the film which I thought looked either unfinished or like something that came out of a crappy video game. Also I'm not sure if it was the camera work or what but I felt nauseated throughout the film. Anyway this was much better then the first film but it still wasn't great.

24. 47 Ronin (2013)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

28 Metascore

A band of samurai sets out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun.

Director: Carl Rinsch | Stars: Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kô Shibasaki, Tadanobu Asano

Votes: 170,907 | Gross: $38.36M

This film was awesome! It has great action, decent special effects, great acting, and some very likable characters. Just so you know though it is very much a popcorn flick, so don't expect a Lord of the Rings type fantasy. The film did have a few flaws like the beginning which to me felt a little slow. I felt the final fight scene was a little short, I feel that the film could have been much better if it was more like Braveheart or Gladiator. I also felt like Keanu Reeves character was not needed, don't get me wrong I enjoyed Keanu Reeves and thought he did a good job but I was more interested in the other characters. I also thought that all the dialog should've been in Japanese but that might just be me. All in all it was a fun film. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to just about anyone.

25. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

PG | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

54 Metascore

When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Jon Daly, Kathryn Hahn

Votes: 340,557 | Gross: $58.24M

One of the best films I've seen this year. It's a nice and enjoyable film and I loved it. I will admit that the film does have its flaws like the beginning to me was just a little slow, and some of the jokes just seemed to take away from the narrative. But other then that the film was great, the blend of comedy and drama was perfect, the cinematography was amazing, the acting was good, I also really liked the soundtrack. I loved this film and I highly recommend it.
