The Best Movies of 2012 (Post-Oscar)

by Christian_Dimartino | created - 06 May 2013 | updated - 03 Jul 2013 | Public

I made a list before the Oscars, but I wanted to wait a little so then I could catch up on everything I needed to see. I am just about caught up. This list isn't a whole lot different, but I am glad I waited because it has given me some time to decide on that dreaded #10 slot. Happy Reading! Honorable Mentions: This is 40, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Ted, Friends with Kids, Hysteria, Chronicle, Men in Black III (I'm still rockin' it).

1. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

PG-13 | 164 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

Eight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman

Votes: 1,825,384 | Gross: $448.14M

2012 was quite a year for movies. But I still say that the king daddy of them all was TDKR, the orgasmic final chapter in Christopher Nolan's trilogy. I can't remember the last Nolan film that wasn't my favorite movie of the year. I love the way that everything ties together. I love the constant surprises it throws our way. I love the feeling of doom you get while you're watching it. I love the performances, and to top it off, it has easily the greatest ending of any movie ever. Spectacular is one word to describe it. One of the best movies of all is another. Bravo! Screw the Oscars. They nominated Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. They don't know what a good movie is.

2. The Master (2012)

R | 138 min | Drama, History

86 Metascore

A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future - until he is tantalized by the Cause and its charismatic leader.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons

Votes: 186,068 | Gross: $16.38M

This is one of a few movies that left people divided. After many years of waiting, I think Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film is a masterpiece. Well worth the wait, it's easily his best work since Magnolia (his best work). Everyone is in top form, especially Phoenix who gives the creepiest performance since Heath Ledger's Joker, and one of the strongest of the year. The Master is unlike any other movie. It leaves you questioning Anderson's point, but that's a good thing I think. I love it's dreaminess, it's cinematography, and score. The academy screwed up again.

3. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,692,549 | Gross: $162.81M

After giving it some serious thought, I realize that Django Unchained should have won Best Picture. Here is a ridiculous movie that takes itself seriously, and for the better. Following his previous masterpiece Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino has written his funniest movie to date, and deserved that long overdue second Oscar. Heck, Jamie Foxx is actually likable in this thing. But the real stars of the show are Christoph Waltz (who won his second Oscar), Leonardo DiCaprio (snubbed again), and Samuel L. Jackson (also snubbed). Django Unchained is a hell of a movie, and it goes out blazing.

4. Skyfall (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

81 Metascore

James Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench

Votes: 730,682 | Gross: $304.36M

What do you get when you put an Oscar winner in the reigns of a James Bond movie? One of the best James Bond movies. Sam Mendes(American Beauty) did an amazing job with Skyfall. Once again, we are shown why Daniel Craig is a star. He is the Bondiest of Bonds. Apparently, the inspiration behind this movie is The Dark Knight, and what a great movie to look off of. Javier Bardem is amazing as the creepy Joker-like villain, and basically, if you were never a Bond believer, or lost your belief, Skyfall will make you believe again. Dazzling, terrific looking, thrilling, and sexy, Skyfall is a great way to celebrate the series.

5. Lincoln (2012)

PG-13 | 150 min | Biography, Drama, History

87 Metascore

As the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Votes: 272,463 | Gross: $182.21M

Steven Spielberg's latest movie is fantastic for many reasons. The top one obviously being Daniel Day Lewis. Obviously, when you cast DDL is a movie, it's gotta be good. Here, he gives another amazing performance. The man is a magician, and it seems as if he is possessed by the ghost of Abe himself. That said, everyone here deserves a pat on the back. This is a very well written and directed drama that everyone involved should be proud of.

6. Argo (2012)

R | 120 min | Biography, Drama, History

86 Metascore

Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.

Director: Ben Affleck | Stars: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin

Votes: 638,745 | Gross: $136.03M

At least this year's Best Picture winner is a good one. Ben Affleck's Argo officially shows us just what Affleck is capable of. Like Matthew Maconaghay(I don't know if that's spelled right), Affleck has now broken out of movie jail. Argo is a great movie. Funny, fast, thrilling, original, and entertaining, Argo is the sort of movie the world needs. I can't wait to see what else Affleck brings our way.

7. Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

R | 157 min | Drama, History, Thriller

95 Metascore

A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L.s Team 6 in May 2011.

Director: Kathryn Bigelow | Stars: Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Mark Strong

Votes: 318,719 | Gross: $95.72M

Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is even better than her last movie, The Hurt Locker. Here is a thrilling movie that keeps you guessing until the very end, even though the audience knows the very end. Jessica Chastain does her best work yet as Maya, who is easily one of the greatest characters of the year. Though it is a little long, Zero Dark Thirty is worth your time.

8. Amour (2012)

PG-13 | 127 min | Drama

95 Metascore

Georges and Anne are an octogenarian couple. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, also a musician, lives in Britain with her family. One day, Anne has a stroke, and the couple's bond of love is severely tested.

Director: Michael Haneke | Stars: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert, Alexandre Tharaud

Votes: 105,618 | Gross: $6.74M

Warning: If you're feeling down, don't watch Amour. Here is the most heartbreaking tale of love brought to the big screen since Atonement, and in depression standards, it blows Atonement away. Amour is a very depressing movie that will shock you and leave you stunned.

9. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama

67 Metascore

Charlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.

Director: Stephen Chbosky | Stars: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Paul Rudd

Votes: 547,514 | Gross: $17.74M

Here is the most surprising movie of the year. I never expected it to be this good. I watched it once, and immediately wanted to see it again. Everyone here is fantastic, espcially Ezra Miller, who will win an oscar someday. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful movie that is enjoyable for anybody who ever went to high school. So, everyone, basically.

10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

PG-13 | 169 min | Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

A reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home, and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis

Votes: 872,363 | Gross: $303.00M

Critics tore Peter Jackson's The Hobbit Part 1 (I don't feel like typing the rest) apart. Why? It's a reminder of what made The Lord of the Rings trilogy so amazing, even though it doesn't quite match it. The Hobbit is a damn good movie. It has great visual effects, it's magical, and it works for nostalgia reasons.

11. Cloud Atlas (2012)

R | 172 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Directors: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski | Stars: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving

Votes: 374,201 | Gross: $27.11M

Here is another movie that left many mixed. Cloud Atlas is way too long and occasionally confusing, but it really should be admired for it's technical accomplishments and its ambition. This is a movie like no other, and though not perfect, deserves to be admired. I kind of loved it. It's enchanting and consistently entertaining, and very original.

12. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

PG-13 | 94 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

84 Metascore

Two 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. While people set out on a search mission, a violent storm approaching them catches their attention.

Director: Wes Anderson | Stars: Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray

Votes: 366,588 | Gross: $45.51M

Wes Anderson's latest movie is a wonderful movie that appeals to his truest fans along with, well, the world. Funny, charming, visually beautiful, and well acted, Moonrise Kingdom is the kind of romantic comedy that we could use more of.

13. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

R | 122 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

81 Metascore

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Director: David O. Russell | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver

Votes: 742,250 | Gross: $132.09M

The year romantic comedies got good again. Silver Linings Playbook is very entertaining and funny, but the main reason to see it is its actors. Bradley Cooper does his best work yet, and Robert De Niro does his best work in years. But the reason to see it is for Jennifer Lawrence, who gives one of the years best performances.

14. The Sessions (2012)

R | 95 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

79 Metascore

A man in an iron lung who wishes to lose his virginity contacts a professional sex surrogate with the help of his therapist and priest.

Director: Ben Lewin | Stars: John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy, Moon Bloodgood

Votes: 43,973 | Gross: $6.00M

The Sessions is a very daring movie that must have been difficult to make. John Hawkes is amazing is this movie, and should have gotten an Oscar nomination. Helen Hunt deserved her Oscar nomination, and is also terrific for the first time in years. The Sessions is a powerful, funny, and moving drama.

15. The Impossible (2012)

PG-13 | 114 min | Drama, History, Thriller

73 Metascore

The story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Director: J.A. Bayona | Stars: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Oaklee Pendergast

Votes: 243,817 | Gross: $19.02M

Here is a drama that really slipped under the radar. The Impossible is a gripping drama that puts you in the middle of the terror. Naomi Watts gives her best performance as a mother fighting for survival, and Tom Holland and Ewan McGregor are also terrific as her family members. The Impossible will shake you as hard as an earthquake.

16. Flight (I) (2012)

R | 138 min | Drama, Thriller

76 Metascore

Troubling questions arise after airline pilot Whip Whitaker makes a miracle landing after a mid-air catastrophe.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Denzel Washington, Nadine Velazquez, Don Cheadle, John Goodman

Votes: 375,923 | Gross: $93.77M

Denzel Washington does his best work in years in Robert Zemeckis' Flight. This movie is a reminder of why Denzel Washington has two Oscars, and why Zemeckis has an Oscar too.

17. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

R | 112 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

68 Metascore

Kevin's mother struggles to love her strange child despite the increasingly dangerous things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.

Director: Lynne Ramsay | Stars: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller, Jasper Newell

Votes: 167,594 | Gross: $1.74M

I realize that it came out last year, but I just couldn't make room for it. Tilda Swinton does her best work here, and she should have been nominated for an Oscar. As should Ezra Miller, who can also be seen in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. We Need to Talk About Kevin is an original and disturbing piece of work that should be seen.

18. Prometheus (I) (2012)

R | 124 min | Adventure, Mystery, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

Following clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron

Votes: 643,671 | Gross: $126.48M

Ridley Scott's return to the world of Alien is one of the most terrifying movies since, well, Alien. Prometheus is a frightening mind trip that will leave you wanting more, even though we've gotten enough.

19. Killer Joe (2011)

R | 102 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

62 Metascore

When a debt puts a young man's life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.

Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church

Votes: 83,277 | Gross: $1.99M

William Freidkin's Killer Joe is a guilty pleasure that I'm not guilty about. This is the trashiest, craziest thriller of the year, and that's what makes it so good. That, and Matthew McConaghey, who just can't be stopped right now. Killer Joe proves reminds us why M.M. is famous in the first place.

20. Frankenweenie (2012)

PG | 87 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

74 Metascore

When a boy's beloved dog passes away suddenly, he attempts to bring the animal back to life through a powerful science experiment.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau

Votes: 117,024 | Gross: $35.29M

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie is his best movie since Sweeney Todd. It's a delightful homage to classic horror movies that will dazzle and charm. Easily the best animated film of the year.

21. Ruby Sparks (2012)

R | 104 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

67 Metascore

A novelist struggling with writer's block finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then willing her into existence.

Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris | Stars: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas

Votes: 105,394 | Gross: $2.54M

The guys that directed Little Miss Sunshine finally came back with Ruby Sparks, a movie that I think is even better than their last. Ruby Sparks is a funny, creative, and well acted romantic comedy.

22. The Hunger Games (2012)

PG-13 | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.

Director: Gary Ross | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci

Votes: 1,002,777 | Gross: $408.01M

It feels like Jennifer Lawrence is on top of the world right now. Good! Become president J-Law, I don't care. Her first slam-dunk of the year, The Hunger Games, is a chilling and thrilling movie that is even better than it looks. I can't wait for the sequel, Catching Fire.

23. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

After Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to save the city from the machinations of a mysterious reptilian foe.

Director: Marc Webb | Stars: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan

Votes: 701,595 | Gross: $262.03M

Here is another movie I liked a lot more than I thought I would. The Amazing Spider-man isn't exactly necessary, but at the same time, it sort of is, because it is even better than the majority of the previous Spider-man series. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are comftorable in their roles, and I can't wait to see more of them.

24. Brave (2012)

PG | 93 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

69 Metascore

Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell | Stars: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters

Votes: 441,836 | Gross: $237.28M

Here is yet another movie that I liked more than I thought I would. After Cars 2 left us all feeling blue, Brave came back and rescued Pixar from pure destruction. This is a funny and dazzling animated movie that is reminiscent of classic Disney movies.

25. Wanderlust (2012)

R | 98 min | Comedy, Romance

53 Metascore

Rattled by sudden unemployment, a Manhattan couple surveys alternative living options, ultimately deciding to experiment with living on a rural commune where free love rules.

Director: David Wain | Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Malin Akerman, Justin Theroux

Votes: 80,443 | Gross: $17.23M

The years funniest movie is David Wain's Wanderlust. David Wain is a very orverlooked comedic director, and I can't wait to see more from him. Wanderlust is hilarious, and it never stops being so.
