- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. This film has many positive reviews. It has a fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and a decent score on IMDb. That doesn't save it from being completely overhyped. I couldn't stand this film, as I've said on multiple lists. But the most annoying thing about this whole film is the fact that people flocked to the cinema extravagantly, thanks to the awesome marketing campaign which told us that the film would take a darker tone, which it certainly didn't. Based on the amount of money this film made, this films shows how well an aggressive marketing campaign can work.
- DirectorThor FreudenthalStarsLogan LermanAlexandra DaddarioBrandon T. JacksonIn order to restore their dying safe haven, the son of Poseidon and his friends embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters, to find the mythical Golden Fleece, all the while trying to stop an ancient evil from rising. It certainly doesn't have decent reviews to it's name, unlike Iron Man 3. But like the #1 on my list, it did have an effective marketing campaign, which again told us that this film was to be darker, more serious than it's predecessor. This film, though, was certainly not. My least favourite film of the year pulled in a little over 200 million dollars, to my dismay. Again, marketing can do wonders for your film.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJaden SmithDavid DenmanWill SmithA crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help. After Earth is not necessarily over-hyped. It didn't get great reviews, and the film made 243 million dollars, with an 130 million dollar budget, which isn't an incredibly huge tally overall. But this film was certainly a pile of crap, and it had a lot of things going for it. M. Night Shyamalan is a fairly decent director, and Will Smith is a great actor! Yet this film turned out to provide little more than a wasted experience. It certainly deserves this position.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.The Great Gatsby was lavishly marketed, with an emphasis on parties, the rich, the famous. Unfortunately, this only accounted for half of the film. The second half is a sappy love story, which made for some cringe worthy moments. With some fairly decent performances, it certainly wasn't one of the worst films of the year. It just delivered much less than was promised, and for a 7.3 on IMDb, I felt like it wasn't that impressive.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.Thor: The Dark World was one of the highest grossing films of the year, and it wasn't exactly disappointing. After Iron Man 3, this film certainly couldn't fail. But for a film that has a 7.8 on IMDb and 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, I felt like this film was a little bit of a let down. I didn't enjoy the pacing, and Malekith wasn't an incredibly intimidating villain. It's not too bad, but still, it's certainly not worthy of the big hype it received.
