Great Comedies You've (Maybe) Never Seen
by toddkramer | created - 27 Dec 2013 | updated - 26 Apr 2017 | PublicHere's a collection of great films that have been long forgotten or were never given enough credit for their brilliance in the first place. I've left some obvious choices of this list as it's not a list of all great comedies but all great, obscure comedies. Drama is easy but creating great comedy film is difficult and classic comedies are hard to find.

1. Quick Change (1990)
R | 89 min | Comedy, Crime
Three thieves successfully rob a New York City bank, but making the escape from the city proves to be almost impossible.
Directors: Howard Franklin, Bill Murray | Stars: Bill Murray, Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, Dale Grand
Votes: 22,172 | Gross: $15.26M
This is Bill Murray's best film ever. Why it never got more attention when it was released can probably be chalked up to poor marketing and date of release. This film starts out awesome and then just keeps getting better!
2. Car Wash (1976)
PG | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
A comedic take on the daily life of car-wash employees, chronicling their hopes, fears, joys, dreams, and tribulations, and meeting some eccentric customers along the way.
Director: Michael Schultz | Stars: Richard Pryor, Franklyn Ajaye, Sully Boyar, Richard Brestoff
Votes: 8,181
Everything about this movie is perfect. The music, the narration, the cast... simply everything. An absolute classic.
3. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
R | 82 min | Comedy, Music
Spinal Tap, one of England's loudest bands, is chronicled by film director Marty DiBergi on what proves to be a fateful tour.
Director: Rob Reiner | Stars: Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Kimberly Stringer
Votes: 147,248 | Gross: $4.74M
OK. So true comedy aficionados will already know Spinal Tap but I guarantee that there are plenty of 20somethings out there who you could park in front of this film today and they wouldn't even understand that it's supposed to be ironic. I know because I tried. "It's not a real documentary dingus". "Oh... hey, this is pretty funny". "Yeah, I know."
4. Midnight Run (1988)
R | 126 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
A bounty hunter pursues a former Mafia accountant who is also being chased by a rival bounty hunter, the F.B.I., and his old mob boss after jumping bail.
Director: Martin Brest | Stars: Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton
Votes: 94,118 | Gross: $38.41M
The definitive "buddy picture". This is before DeNiro became a recognized comedic actor and the unlikely combination of him and Charles Gordon makes up the chemistry for comedy.
5. Raising Arizona (1987)
PG-13 | 94 min | Comedy, Crime
When a childless couple--an ex-con and an ex-cop--decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, Trey Wilson, John Goodman
Votes: 150,163 | Gross: $22.85M
OK. This is borderline because you may have seen it long ago. But I doubt anyone under the age of 35 has ever even heard of it. For those that know, this film is pure classic comedy. It's an early Coen bros but I don't think they've ever topped it.
6. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)
PG | 110 min | Comedy, Crime
Two con men try to settle their rivalry by betting on who can swindle a young American heiress out of fifty thousand dollars first.
Director: Frank Oz | Stars: Steve Martin, Michael Caine, Glenne Headly, Anton Rodgers
Votes: 77,951 | Gross: $42.04M
If you've never seen this film then you are not a fan of Steve Martin and you've never seen Michael Caine at his best. This one I could watch over and over again... and have!
7. Galaxy Quest (1999)
PG | 102 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi
The alumni cast of a space opera television series have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help. However, they also have to defend both Earth and the alien race from a reptilian warlord.
Director: Dean Parisot | Stars: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub
Votes: 177,906 | Gross: $71.58M
I think this film's publicity got fouled up and they tried to pitch it as a kid's movie. It is not a kid's movie but rather a perfect piss-take of a Star Trek type TV show cast who, long after the show has fizzled out, get launched into a real live space adventure. It is well-made, well cast and terrifically funny. If Sam Rockwell's character doesn't make you choke with laughter then you have no sense of humour.
8. Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996)
R | 89 min | Comedy
A pharmaceutical scientist creates a pill that makes people remember their happiest memory, and although it's successful, it has unfortunate side effects.
Director: Kelly Makin | Stars: David Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney
Votes: 9,472 | Gross: $2.65M
Do you know who Kids in the Hall are? You sure will recognize the entire cast of this former Canadian comedy crew in their first (and last) big movie.. it promises big laughs.
9. Three Amigos! (1986)
PG | 104 min | Comedy, Western
Three actors accept an invitation to a Mexican village to perform their onscreen bandit fighter roles, unaware that it is the real thing.
Director: John Landis | Stars: Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Alfonso Arau
Votes: 83,477 | Gross: $39.25M
Maybe you have seen this one but see it again. It's just too hilarious and with an exceptional cast. Martin Short, Chevy Chase and Steve Martin. Hilarity ensues.
10. The Last Detail (1973)
R | 104 min | Comedy, Drama
Two Navy men are ordered to bring a young offender to prison, but decide to show him one last good time along the way.
Director: Hal Ashby | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid, Otis Young, Clifton James
Votes: 27,911 | Gross: $3.19M
I won't say anything more than "watch this film". This is quintessential Jack.
11. MacGruber (2010)
R | 90 min | Action, Comedy
Former special operative MacGruber is called back into action to take down his arch-enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who's in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C.
Director: Jorma Taccone | Stars: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe
Votes: 47,260 | Gross: $8.46M
This is one of the latest films on the list but seriously, are people talking about this film? Am I the only one who nearly soiled himself watching this? Why a movie like The Hangover gets more play than this piece of magic joy is probably more due to the Hollywood publicity machine that fails to reward actual quality comedy. I know funny and this is funny.
12. Bronco Billy (1980)
PG | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy
An idealistic, modern-day cowboy struggles to keep his Wild West show afloat in the face of hard luck and waning interest.
Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, Scatman Crothers
Votes: 12,719 | Gross: $24.27M
A truly fantastic comedy directed and starring the comedy stylings of Clint Eastwood..!? So Clint isn't exactly funny (he still plays a tough guy) but the cast, script and everything else about this out of character film is wonderfully humourous.
13. Private Benjamin (1980)
R | 109 min | Comedy, War
A sheltered young high-society woman joins the United States Army on a whim and finds herself in a trickier situation than she ever expected.
Director: Howard Zieff | Stars: Goldie Hawn, Eileen Brennan, Armand Assante, Robert Webber
Votes: 28,655 | Gross: $69.85M
You gotta love Goldie and she really delivers her best performance and the great Albert Brooks plays her husband here (for a while). It's a bit of a girlie movie but there's a lot of real funny in here.
14. Army of Darkness (1992)
R | 81 min | Comedy, Horror

Director: Sam Raimi | Stars: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert, Ian Abercrombie

Votes: 21,977 | Gross: $21.46M
How they ever got Brando to reprise his role as the Godfather for this comedy film I'll never know but his performance here is better than in the Godfather and much funnier ;-) Broderick is terrific (as himself) and Bruno Kirby he's always good. This is a solid piece of entertainment.

I love anything to do with Albert Brooks and this movie when watched by the truly discerning viewer will marvel you with it's subtle, sick and strange humor coupled with it's incredibly prophetic vision for what the future of entertainment will actually look like. Brooks was way ahead of his time on this film.

You would be forgiven for thinking this film is nothing more than a teen summertime romp flick based on the era and title but this is actually a fun and funny little picture with greats like Robin Williams, Peter O'Toole, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Twiggy and Jimmy Cliff! Fantastic. I mean it is sort of silly but the performances really pull this film together and make it very funny.

Holy crap... I laughed myself half-dead. New Zealanders, for some reason, have a handle on extremely subtle humour, even if that humour is about a house full of vampires.
