Jiro Dreams of Sushi -- "Most Mouth-Watering"
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is about this 85-year old sushi chef. The filmmaker started out making a documentary on three sushi chefs. One of them, my own personal favorite, was a personal friend of mine, Nozawa, who closed down earlier this year. Once they started filming Jiro Ono, however, the filmmaker decided to focus it just him. (He also filmed a little sequence on Nozawa, which I think you can find online.) The film is about his relationship with his son who is supposed to take over the business but he's unable to because this guy [Jiro] is a master. It’s about when you are a master at something and a feeling that the kids have that they can’t live up to their father’s discipline and devotion to the craft. The son is like, "Why the hell am I cutting up fish and boiling rice anyway?" And if you love sushi, you’ll like this film. The idea of being a master at something is dying. When the great sushi chefs are gone, they are irreplaceable, like Marlon Brando is irreplaceable.
