DISCOVER--fifty extraordinary obscurities you may have missed
To call these films an acquired taste is an understatement. They all fall into the category of love 'em or leave 'em. We all like to revisit our favourite films, but we also like to sometimes leave our comfort zone. The question is: is this one of those times when you feel like finding something different? If, like me, you enjoy wading through oddities in the hope of finding that one shiny little rare gem to add to your collection, then here's a few that made it into mine, and made sifting through all the costume jewellery worthwhile...
This is also one of the few of my lists that features a fair smattering of recent 21st century films, which I find quite encouraging...

- DirectorJuan López MoctezumaStarsClaudio BrookDavid SilvaTina RomeroAfter the death of her parents, a young girl arrives at a convent and brings a sinister presence with her. Is it her enigmatic imaginary friend, Alucarda, who is to blame? Or is there a satanic force at work?Imagine Carrie in a 16th century convent...l
- DirectorRyu Seung-wanStarsRyu Seung-beomYoon So-yiAhn Sung-kiAs a dorky cop falls in with five Tao masters who admire his c'hi, an ancient foe comes looking for them all."No palm blasts in the house, I said!!"
Bellowed at by his boss, shamed by local hoods, and just generally beaten up by life itself, hapless nerdy traffic cop Sang-Hwan is hit by Cupid's arrow in the from of a mystical 'palm blast' when both he and a super-powered waitress (multi-powered Eui-Jin played with charm and sass by So-yi Yoon) pursue a handbag snatcher. When he meets the mysterious Seven Masters, he is told that he has latent super-powers too--it's just a matter of training.
Arahan is a clever and classy Korean super-hero comedy that mixes elements of Greatest American Hero and X-Men with The Matrix and Spider-Man and is ten times better than all the recent amateur would-be super-heroes dross like the distasteful Kick-Ass etc. It deserves to be much better known than it is. - DirectorAlfonso BresciaStarsSirpa LaneVassili KarisLucio RosatoIn the future the struggle for space superiority has forced humanity to search the cosmos for a rare element called Antallum that is the key ingredient for the construction of neutron bombs. Starship captain Larry Madison and his crew are assigned to retrieve Antallum from the remote planet Lorigon. However, Madison and crew find themselves under the control of a powerful computer on Lorigon that incites everyone to have sex.The most bizarre Italian rip-off ever, this transposes Walerian Borowczyk's lurid gothic adult fairy tale The Beast to the world of 1960s sci-fi like Dan Dare, Fireball XL-5, and Star Trek and turns it into a sort-core sex film.
- DirectorAnne WheelerStarsWendy CrewsonKaryn DwyerChristina CoxMaggie, 19, works at a lesbian/LGBT bookstore. Her mom's getting divorced and has invited herself to stay with Maggie. Maggie hasn't told her, she's lesbian. Her new girlfriend moves in as well.A lesbian version of The Birdcage, genuinely funny, with a likeable cast. Incredible--a lesbian film that isn't precious, pretentious, or earnest.
- DirectorTeruo IshiiStarsTetsurô TanbaGorô IbukiTatsuo EndôA ronin Shino Asu (I die Tomorrow) gets rescued by the Bohachi clan. Their leader Shirobei Daimon, charged by the Shogun with running Edo's brothels enlists him to kill clients of tea-house whores who are stealing his business. The correct spelling is Bohachi Bushido, and it's not porn. A jaded samurai, tired of killing, tries to kill himself but is saved by a weird immoral cult and acquires a posse of naked female assassins...
- DirectorGeorge SidneyStarsDick Van DykeAnn-MargretJanet LeighA rock singer travels to a small Ohio town to make his "farewell" television performance and kiss his biggest fan before he is drafted. It's a high school musical set in the '60's--because it is the '60's. Forget Grease, this is the real thing, a total time capsule. This film would be much better known if it hadn't taken the easy option of making fun of Elvis. Hard to believe it was a national sport once. He can't have minded much--Ann Margret went from this to Viva Las Vegas. Forget Birdie, and just enjoy Dick Van Dyke, Paul Lynde, and the wayyyyy over the top musical numbers.
- DirectorByron HaskinStarsGuy WilliamsHeidi BrühlPedro ArmendárizTo marry Princess Jana, Captain Sindbad must battle deadly obstacles and fight El Kerim, the evil ruler who also wants to marry the princess.Guy Williams of Zorro and Lost in Space fame stars in this stylish sword and sorcery adventure that presses all the right buttons. Great cast and sets, nice 1950s special effects.
- DirectorHideaki AnnoStarsEriko SatôMikako IchikawaJun MurakamiThe adventure of Cutie Honey, a super heroine who can transform into anything using her necklace to switch on and say "Honey Flash!".Live action Manga that has to be seen to be believed.
- DirectorIrwin AllenStarsStuart WhitmanRosemary ForsythRobert ColbertA group of 21st-century colonists inhabit the underwater city called Pacifica. They find they must defend the city against hostile alien forces. An unsold Irwin Allen pilot utilising actors and props from his classic 1960s sci-fi series (ignore above synopsis--no aliens, just criminal intrigue and an approaching meteor). Of course, if it had gone to series, there would have been silver suits and cabbage men all over the place. Featuring human Thunderbird puppet Stuart Whitman as the two-dimensional good guy, Robert Wagner as the bad guy, most of the cast of Time Tunnel, and the Flying Sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Cornier than the entire U.S. mid-west.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsAlice ArnoRobert WoodsHoward VernonTwo wealthy aristocrats lure a virginal girl to a Spanish island for a night of sex, death and cannibalism. The Most Dangerous Game with comic-book cannibalism, and no clothes on. And Lina Romay. What's not to like??
- DirectorHyung-rae ShimStarsJason BehrAmanda BrooksRobert ForsterOnce in 500 years, ancient mythical creatures come to Earth, wreaking havoc and destruction. This time they must be stopped.A Korean legend comes to life and an evil serpent and a small army of CGI dragons terrorise Los Angeles. Don't understand why this one didn't get more attention. Infinitely superior to all those cheap and shabby corner-cutting CGI creature features that Siffy are churning out, but maybe it got lost among them. I admit the DVD sleeve makes it look just like them. But imagine the climax of Avengers Assemble without the Avengers.
- DirectorPatrick LussierStarsNicolas CageAmber HeardWilliam FichtnerA vengeful father escapes from hell and chases after the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter.Nicholas Cage escapes from Hell, pursued by the Devil, to avenge his daughter's death. Amber Heard is gorgeous. A sort of contemporary Twilight Zone with a pinch of Tarantino-like hipness, and just not quite enough nudity to become a classic. Never mind, it's fun.
- DirectorNathan JuranStarsEdward JuddMartha HyerLionel JeffriesWhen a spaceship lands on the moon, it is hailed as a new accomplishment, before it becomes clear that a Victorian party completed the journey in 1899, leading investigators to that mission's last survivor.Astronauts landing on the moon for what they believe is the first time discover a ragged British flag claiming the moon for Queen Victoria!! If that doesn't get your attention, nothing will, but it gets better. The world media rushes to a nursing home in a tiny English village where they find an elderly man who tells his tale... Lionel Jeffries is priceless in this fluffy fantasy adapted from Jules Verne and realised by special effects veteran Ray Harryhausen.
- DirectorJoann SfarStarsEric ElmosninoLucy GordonLaetitia CastaA glimpse at the life of French singer Serge Gainsbourg, from growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s to his death in 1991 at the age of 62.An extraordinary biography of Serge Gainsbourg, pop culture icon of the 1960s who managed to bed both Bardot and Birkin among others, and is here haunted by a surreal human-sized puppet and muse. The scenes with Bardot are worth watching alone, but the entire film is a delight.
- DirectorNorifumi SuzukiStarsMiki SugimotoReiko IkeEmi JôMembers of the Red Helmet biker girl gang wind up in Kyoto, where they get into conflict with other girl gangs and local yakuza thugs. Also known as Girl Boss Guerilla. I love this Japanese girl gang s**t and this is one of the silliest. Heaven.
- DirectorRyûhei KitamuraKoji HashimotoShûsuke KanekoStarsMasahiro MatsuokaRei KikukawaDon FryeGodzilla's fiftieth Anniversary project, in which Godzilla travels around the world to fight his old foes and his allies plus a new, mysterious monster named Monster X.The gang's all here in this insane attempt to bring Godzilla and his mates into the world of The Matrix, Independence Day, and X-Men. Too long by twenty minutes, like most Japanese films, but never a dull moment. Fanboy heaven, with everybody--and I mean everybody--making an appearance. The Toho version of 1964's Fantastic Four Annual no. 3.
- DirectorJohnnie ToStarsMichelle YeohAnita MuiMaggie CheungWhile one tough woman with an invisible robe has stolen 18 babies for her powerful master, two other tough women and the cops try to stop her.Three female Japanese super-heroes battle baby-snatching demon... I think. Let me know if you figure it out...
- DirectorAllen CoulterStarsAdrien BrodyBen AffleckDiane LaneA detective examines the mysterious death of George Reeves, the star of the television series Adventures of Superman (1952).A fairly straightforward and interesting retellng of the curious life and death of George Reeves, the amiable actor who portrayed Superman on 1950s television, and felt his acting career had been ruined because of it.
- DirectorJirí MenzelStarsIvan BarnevOldrich KaiserJulia JentschA look at the glamorous life at an old-world Prague hotel. Not really. This is about how life had to go on during the years of Nazi occupation, and how ordinary people--one guy in particular--coped with day to day existence in a frightened totalitarian society, sometimes pragmatically, sometimes shamefully.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.Tarantino's amazing war film for people who hate war films deserves a mention here for its extraordinary and astonishing ending, a superb conceit. But why the hell not? After all, it's a movie, not a historical documentary. As ever with Tarantino, the film is a hit and miss patchwork of inspiration and indulgence, and only occasionally dull. But you mustn't miss it.
- DirectorSatoshi MikiStarsKumiko AsôMorio KazamaRyô KaseA quirky young woman who loves antiques embarks on risky adventures and business endeavors with her eccentric friends, trying to score a unique item that will finally be worth a huge profit after her sacrificed savings to open her own shop.Cute, quirky Japanese comedy released as Instant Swamp. It's a chick flick Jim, but not as we know it.
- DirectorWilliam Cameron MenziesStarsHelena CarterArthur FranzJimmy HuntA young boy learns that space aliens are taking over the minds of earthlings.Classic 1950s sci-fi, told in the form of a little boy's nightmare, with suitably surreal imagery.
- DirectorNathan JuranStarsKerwin MathewsJudi MeredithTorin ThatcherA farmboy-turned-knight must protect a princess from the schemes of an evil wizard. Not as slick as the Ray Harryhausen sword and sorcery films of he same period, but that's why I like it. Kerwin Matthews is the heroic lead, but pretty Judi Meredith as the princess and evil twin, and Torin Thatcher as the bad guy steal the show. The special effects are a bit rough round the edges for the time, but beautifully realised.
- DirectorDerek JarmanStarsAdam AntRichard O'BrienIan CharlesonQueen Elizabeth I travels 400 years into the future to witness the appalling revelation of a dystopian London overrun by corruption and a vicious gang of punk guerrilla girls led by the new Monarch of Punk.Mental art film that has Queen Elizabeth I and palace warlock John Dee visit punk-infested Britain in the company of Shakespeare's Ariel in 1976, only to find Buckingham Palace turned into a recording studio and an urban wasteland of muggings and murder. Some awful drama school acting, but enough ideas to keep things intriguing. Jordan (the first one) singing Rule Britannia has to be seen to be believed.
- DirectorTetsuya NakashimaStarsKyôko FukadaAnna TsuchiyaHiroyuki MiyasakoMomoko, a strange and seemingly emotionless girl obsessed with 18th century France, befriends a Yanki biker and the two experience the ups and downs of their unusual lives in a rural Japanese town. Two teenage girls, an eccentric loner and fashion victim, and an isolated violent biker, become best buddies in this surreal mix of sukeban and manga chick flick. A constant stream of wonderful ideas and mad moments making full use of the wide repertoire of 21st century special effects options.
- DirectorSam PeckinpahStarsJames CaanRobert DuvallArthur HillMike Locken, who works for a private security firm affiliated with the C.I.A., is betrayed by his partner and left apparently crippled for life.Little known (in comparison) Peckinpah film with some great moments and a fantastic cast, including James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Bo Hopkins. Love it when they just blow away the ninjas with bullets. And the bomb disposal bit.
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWah YuenQiu YuenIn Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.Just as a simple description of predecessor Shaolin Soccer as a comedy about football could not do that film justice, Kung Fu Hustle is even more difficult to describe without lapsing into simplistic cliches and giving the wrong impression. Stephen Chow acts, writes, and directs, is obsessed with film and its possibilities, and is consequently both derivative and original. There is nothing I can say that won't give you a false image of this film, so just dive in and give it a go.
- DirectorBruno CorbucciStarsRenato PozzettoGloria GuidaLia ZoppelliGiorgio is a young Italian bank clerk who has to move from Milan to Rome for work reasons, promising his girlfriend Candida to find a suitable home for them and her own mother. After many comical incidents Giorgio finds a luxurious mansion for rent at a ludicrously low price and is soon joined by Candida and her mother.Renato Pozetto and Gloria Guida play reincarnated lovers who buy a haunted house in this absurd light, bright comedy. It's everything a haunted house comedy isn't.
- DirectorH. Tjut DjalilStarsBarbara Anne ConstableChristopher J. HartClaudia Angelique RademakerThe spirit of an ancient evil queen possesses the body of a young anthropological student, who then goes on a murderous rampage.Blatant Indonesian Terminator rip-off has to be seen to be believed. Hilarious violence.
- DirectorMichael WinnerStarsBurt LancasterRobert RyanLee J. CobbA lawman from Bannock arrives in Sabbath to arrest all the cattlemen whose wild celebration the year before resulted in the accidental death of an old man. This clever corruption of the straightforward authority-figure-guns-down-slimeballs fantasy turns the hero/villain roles upside down and inside out as you realise that the criminals are just a bunch of rowdies who got out of hand, and the lawman of the title is a psychotic lunatic. A wonderful cast, lead by Burt Lancaster and Lee J. Cobb, and including Sheree North, Robert Ryan, Robert Duvall, Albert Salmi, and J.D. Cannon.
- DirectorJim WynorskiStarsMelanie VinczRaven De La CroixAngela AamesSeeking revenge, officer Angel Wolfe, her Native American friend Whitestar, and outlaw Heather infiltrate a fortified island where an undead wizard and his evil cult force captured women to take part in gladiatorial tournaments. The prolific Jim Wynorski's first and best film, with everything but the kitchen sink thrown in. Wynorski is the Orson Welles of b-movies, and this is his Citizen Kane. After this, each film became progressively less interesting.
- DirectorEric ForsbergStuart GillardStarsPaul LoganTiffanyBarry WilliamsA mutant strain of giant ferocious piranha escape from the Amazon and eat their way toward Florida. One of the silliest, and so most fun, of the glut of CGI killer fish films of recent years.
- DirectorJuraj HerzStarsIva JanzurováJosef AbrhámNina DivískováKlara and Viktoria are sisters. Their father dies, leaving most of his property to Klara. When Klara becomes involved with a man that her sister loves, Viktoria begins to plot her murder. Two sisters, one naive and innocent, the other hateful and jealous, are portrayed by the same actress in this gothic fairytale.
- DirectorBoris SagalStarsCharlton HestonAnthony ZerbeRosalind CashDr Robert Neville has developed an experimental vaccine which makes him the only immune survivor of a biological catastrophe. A gang of homicidal mutants blame science for their condition and attempt to kill him.Underrated sci-fi action thriller immortalised by The Simpsons, with a wonderful performance by Anthony Zerbe as the leader of the vampiric mutants. Charlton Heston is tolerable and credible as the supposed last man on Earth, and there are no dull moments. Avoids and yet somehow simultaneously indulges in all the cliches.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIvana BaqueroAriadna GilSergi LópezIn the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.Guillermo Del Toro grew up watching The Outer Limits, and boy does it show in this gothic fantasy fairytale of fascism and a hideous, hidden monster.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsPeter SellersClaudine LongetNatalia BorisovaA clerical mistake results in a bumbling Indian film star being invited to an exclusive Hollywood party instead of being fired.Never much cared for the Pink Panther series, which everyone seems to consider his best, but this Peter Sellers film from the Austin Powers 1960s is a gem. Fabulous character comedy with a great supporting cast and consistently funny.
- DirectorNoboru IguchiStarsAya KiguchiHitomi HasebeTakumi SaitôAfter receiving robotic implants, two sisters compete as assassins. Most of these CGI blood and guts exploiters from Japan are incredibly boring and stupid, with a contempt for their own audience, but this one has a smidgen of originality about it and is so over-the-top that it's quite good fun. Like the similarly slightly superior Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, you won't remember anything about it as soon as it ends.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsRobin WilliamsShelley DuvallRay WalstonThe adventures of the famous sailor man and his friends in the seaside town of Sweethaven. An extraordinary recreation of the Thimble Theatre strips rather than the better known cartoons shown on TV, Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall were born to play Popeye and Olive. The rest of the casting is equally impeccable. Whatever possessed Disney to employ Robert Altman to make Popeye we will never know, but their box office disaster was our gain, one of the most faithful recreations of a comic strip ever put on film.
- DirectorDonald CammellNicolas RoegStarsJames FoxMick JaggerAnita PallenbergA violent East London gangster undergoes a transformation of identity while hiding from his former colleagues in the home of a jaded Bohemian rock star and his two girlfriends.A murderous gangster on the run from his own people takes refuge in the shambolic residence of a faded rock star and his druggie girlfriends. No such simplistic description will do this extraordinary film justice... It may be rooted firmly in the '70s, but it never gets old...
- DirectorMichael Caton-JonesStarsJohn HurtJoanne WhalleyBridget FondaBased on the Profumo Scandal of 1963, an affair between an exotic dancer and the Minister of War shakes up the British government. Both the 1960s as The Sixties and contemporary tabloid journalism began with Christine Keeler and the Profumo affair, and this is a clear, balanced, unbiased, and entertaining retelling of the whole sorry business. It was also the beginning of unearned celebrity (an entire industry today) and the end of equally undeserved respect for authority. If all this sounds a little dry, it's also a damned good story...
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWei ZhaoYat-Fei WongA young Shaolin follower reunites with his discouraged brothers to form a soccer team using their martial art skills to their advantage.Creative use of CGI for comedy instead of the usual crowds, explosions hardware, and monsters...
- DirectorAndrew V. McLaglenStarsJames StewartDoug McClureGlenn CorbettA Virginia farmer who has vowed to remain neutral during the Civil War is spurred into action when his youngest son is taken by Union soldiers.Weepie western from 20th Century Fox, a sprawling family saga with James Stewart and a cast of familiar supporting players. Watch for Kevin Hagen as a vicious killer.
- DirectorTinto BrassStarsGiancarlo GianniniPhilippe LéotardFrançois NégretWhile his girlfriend recovers from a medical procedure, a corrupt lawyer becomes entranced by the grand visions of a mob boss.A jaded two-bit thug and his girlfriend find themselves in a tired and run-down coastal town in thrall to a tin-pot tyrant barely out of junior school and his entourage of gun-toting hookers. It plays like Robert Rodriguez meets Miami Vice, but actually it's Tinto Brass' strangest film since his 1960s debacles...
- DirectorFrançois OzonStarsCharlotte RamplingCharles DanceLudivine SagnierA British mystery author visits her publisher's home in the South of France, where her interaction with his unusual daughter sets off some touchy dynamics. After half a century devoted to offbeat TV and film, I both love it and hate it when I get caught out. This little gem has a perfectly obvious and well-telegraphed twist ending that I had every opportunity to see coming (there's no cheating), and I was totally taken in (well, Ludivine Sangnier, dammit!! Talk about a distraction...). There I was, thinking "this film's turned to s**t! it don't add up!!". Well, duhh. Anyway, catch it or miss it, you can only watch it once, so pick your moment. And stay away from the reviews and comments until you have.
- DirectorHajime SatôStarsShin'ichi ChibaPeggy NealFranz GruberA group of surface dwellers comes upon an underwater city ruled by a mad scientist and his amphibious servants.Out at sea, the U.S. Navy is clearly not coming clean about alleged sightings of shadowy fish-men in the ocean. A mad scientist is creating amphibian zombie cyborgs out of hapless humans to live undersea and staff his world-conquering scientific community, and has the same fate in store for nosy captive reporters Ken and Jenny, our heroes (a pre-martial arts Sonny Chiba and Peggy Neal). Things look bad when they're doomed for the amphibian-making processing machine, which, boasts its creator, includes "total elimination of sexual distinction!" Yikes!
This is Terror Beneath the Sea, a marriage of the James Bond/UNCLE shenanigans of the time, and dear old Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (which did this one several times), from Japan's Toei studios. The creatures, while obviously the standard men in modified wetsuits, are well-designed, with wicked, beady, soulless eyes instead of the more typical ping-pong ball eyes of the period. - DirectorJeffrey LauStarsChow Yun-FatChien-Lien WuChia-Hui LiuA C.I.A. agent is assigned to go to Beijing to look for a hidden "treasure," which turns out to be a woman who has supernatural powers, and is the National Treasure of China.Action, romance, violence, and a touch of the supernatural... oh, and Chow Yun Fat, the coolest guy on the planet.
- DirectorYoshihiro NishimuraNaoyuki TomomatsuStarsYukie KawamuraTakumi SaitôEri OtoguroA reconstructed girl is created from the pieces of a vampire girl's mini-butchery. Slaughter abounds as both of them pursue the same boy.Another in the seemingly endless line of insultingly slapdash blood and guts gore films punishing pouty teenage girl leads that must be aimed at sad, angry virgins, although this one--which I boldly investigated for a Frankenstein-themed project--turned out to have a little more inspiration and food for thought than the likes of Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police etc., which tempt you in with groovy titles and then insult your intelligence. Here, you actually get satire and imagination with your CGI gore.
- CreatorBruce WagnerStarsJim BelushiDana DelanyRobert LoggiaA multi-national corporation attempts to take over America while small pockets of resistance hold out against rampant technology.I lost all respect for the TVSF fans of the 1990s when so many I knew refused to even look at this while they raved over cliched, disorganised, badly-written bilge like Babylon 5, seaQuest, Sliders, and the assorted Star Trek spin-offs. It was only five episodes, for chrissakes!! And to think they mocked me for being an Irwin Allen fan!
This was everything serious science-fiction should be--an extrapolation of what was going on in the real world (the early 1990s) at that time (drugs, media, celebrity, technology), taken to a logical conclusion and twisted into a great story. Add to that fantastic design, music, and presentation, along with career-shaking performances from some of TV's brightest and best--Robert Loggia, Nick Mancuso, Angie Dickinson, Dana Delaney... Amazing stuff. - DirectorAntonio MargheritiStarsTony RusselLisa GastoniMassimo SeratoA deranged scientist is using his employer's top-secret bio-laboratory to engage in clandestine experiments. When he starts kidnapping leading citizens for use in his twisted tests, it's up to rogue cop Mike Halstead to come to the rescue. This is Wild, Wild Planet, and it certainly is.
- DirectorSiu-Tung ChingStarsMichelle YeohNing LiAndy Chi-On HuiWonder Seven, a secret group of well-trained government agents in China, has been assigned a case of a computer disc robbery. At first everything seems to go smooth, when a disastrous national conspiracy unravels. This is The Wonder Seven, a bonkers super-hero film with an early appearance by Michelle Yeoh of Police Story 3.
