The film rights to the novel were acquired by New Line Cinema in 1996, represented by producer Mark Johnson. Jeremy Leven was hired to write the script, which caught the attention of Steven Spielberg in 1998, who wished to film it with Tom Cruise as Noah Calhoun. Spielberg's commitment to other projects led to Jim Sheridan becoming attached to direct the following year. Filming was to start in 1999 but pushed back over rewrites. Sheridian eventually backed out by October 2000 to work on In America (2002).
According to Nick Cassavetes, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams did not get along at first and Gosling tried to have McAdams replaced. To improve the relationship between the leads, Nick Cassavetes staged an intervention by bringing them into a room where they could air all the grievances they had with each other and work something out. They soon patched over their differences, enough to become a real-life couple for some time.
Other actresses besides Rachel McAdams who are rumored to have been under consideration for the role of Allie included Ashley Judd, Britney Spears and Reese Witherspoon.
Ryan Gosling (Noah) and Rachel McAdams (Allie) were both born in St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario.
Ryan Gosling was the director's (Nick Cassavetes) first and only choice for the role of Noah. Before Cassavetes, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and Justin Timberlake were also once attached to the project but backed out.
Ryan Gosling prepared for his role by living in Charleston, South Carolina before filming began. For two months, he rowed the Ashley River in the morning and built furniture during the day. Gosling built the kitchen table featured in the movie in preparation for his role as Noah.
Rachel McAdams spent time in Charleston before filming to familiarize herself with the surroundings and took ballet and etiquette classes. She had a dialect coach to learn the southern accent.
The "after 7 years Allie and Noah" scenes were shot first and then the crew/cast went on a Christmas break. Ryan Gosling had to lose the beard and 20lbs he'd had as the older Noah and come back to play the young Noah. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were rather shy and unsure around each other in the "after 7 years" scenes but were more comfortable together in the young Allie and Noah scenes. - DirectorSteve CarrStarsIce CubeMike EppsJustin PierceA streetwise man flees South Central Los Angeles, heading to the suburbs and his lottery-winner uncle and cousin, to avoid a neighborhood thug with a grudge who has just escaped from prison. Also starring: Don 'D.C.' 'Chris Tucker' did not reprise his role of Smokey from the original film because he'd become a born again Christian after filming Money Talks (1997) and chose to do the Rush Hour series instead. He is referenced to throughout the film and explains the absence of the Smokey character.

Brad Pitt's feature film debut. - DirectorCornel WildeStarsCornel WildeGert van den BerghKen GampuDuring the 1800s, a safari guide, two elephant hunters and their crew run into trouble with the natives in the South African veld when they refuse to offer gifts to the tribesmen.Cornel Wilde was ill through much of the filming but continued, noting that it seemed to add to his performance.
Even though Cornel Wilde's character is simply credited as "Man", Gert van den Bergh's character calls him "Larry" twice in early scenes.
Cornel Wilde was careful to try to avoid harm to animals appearing in the film where possible. In the scene where the python and the monitor lizard battle, it became clear that the python was winning and the monitor was in danger. Wilde personally intervened to save the monitor lizard; the lizard bit him on the leg, refusing to let go. Crew members killed it and Wilde had to be evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
Cornel Wilde said in interviews at the time that scene in which his character turns and is narrowly missed by a spear was an accident that could have been gruesomely real, but the scene worked and was kept.
In October 1808 fur trapper John Colter set out with another trapper, John Potts, on a trapping expedition. Foolishly, they returned to the Three Forks area in Wyoming, where they were able to amass almost a ton of furs. However, at Jefferson Fork they were attacked by Blackfoot Indians, who shot and killed Potts and took the furs. Colter was captured and given a chance to live. He was stripped naked and given a 30-second head start to run for his life. He outran all of the Indians except for one. When they were the only two left, Colter turned on his pursuer and in the ensuing fight took the Indian's spear and killed him with it. Colter ran for five miles across a rocky plain between the Jefferson and Madison Forks. Once he reached the Madison River, he dove under a mass of logs and beaver lodges and hid in an air pocket in the icy water until nightfall. He floated six miles downstream and climbed up a sheer cliff. He walked, still without any clothes, the 250 miles to Fort Raymond, where he arrived after 11 days.
