These are films that are often considered great, even among the greatest, but there are a lot of holes in them.

- DirectorTom HooperStarsHugh JackmanRussell CroweAnne HathawayIn 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever. The problem with this movie is that it follows an operatic style where nearly everything is sung as opposed to a traditional musical where songs and/or dance are interspaced to enhance the storyline, helping to tell the story. Les Miserables' style, which many people loved, even had my mom confused, and my mom loves both opera and traditional musicals. Too bad. I read Les Miserables in high school and it's still the best book I ever read. My mom asked me during the movie if this is the way the book went and I said, "I can't tell. They're singing too much."
- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.Spectacular most of the time, but there are times when it's downright a snoozer. The scenes with Jose Ferrer are especially boring.
- DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsBette DavisAnne BaxterGeorge SandersA seemingly timid but secretly ruthless ingénue insinuates herself into the lives of an aging Broadway star and her circle of theater friends.I admit, I'm not a fan of this type of genre. But that's just it -- a lot of people aren't. You have to really enjoy these types of films to enjoy AAE. The acting is also overrated -- Bette Davis has done much better.
- DirectorVictor FlemingGeorge CukorSam WoodStarsClark GableVivien LeighThomas MitchellA sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.Saying anything bad about this classic is like saying a saint had his flaws. Well, fact is, like every saint, Gone with the Wind had its flaws. One of the worst is overacting by Vivien Leigh. Another is is that it's just not for everyone. It's basically an overgrown chick flick. One aspect that isn't a flaw is the acting of Clark Gable -- he really was fantastic in this.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsWilliam H. MacyFrances McDormandSteve BuscemiMinnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson.OK, this really is a fantastic movie. I actually live in Fargo and many people don't like this, saying, "We don't act like that." And we don't. We also don't talk like that, which is why I'm listing this. The Cohen brothers had the people talking more like Canadians than Norwegian-Americans. And not once did one person say, "Uff da," the Norwegian-American term for "Oy vey." Uff da, that was a big omission, fer sure. (I actually do say "fer sure.")
