After the Purple Wedding...Now What?5 of 10
The Way of Leonardo DiCaprio: Break in by any means necessary, but snatch the big opportunities.
On a recent episode of "The Big Bang Theory", Penny, the show's struggling actress, wrestled with whether to take a role in a deeply awful movie (Serial Ape-ist 2: Monkey See, Monkey Kill) to pay the bills. She worried that taking the role would kill her chances of ever having a noteworthy acting career. It's a legitimate concern. However, occasionally people need to be reminded that DiCaprio, the star of The Wolf of Wall Street, a man thought of as one of the greatest actors of his generation, must claim Critters 3, a direct-to-video release, as his first feature role. He recovered soon after that with a recurring role on the ABC sitcom "Growing Pains". His second chance in movies came in 1992, when he won the lead role in This Boy's Life, soon to be followed by his critically-acclaimed performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
While Gleeson already knocked a tremendous role in a television masterpiece out of the park, he may one day be faced with a Critters-style conundrum while seeking to break back into the biz. Our advice? Be selective.
(Unless we're talking about something like, say, a sequel to Cockneys vs. Zombies. We'd love to see that.)
