Poor screenwriters still abuse the so-called f-term and its cognates to this day.
On the influence of swearing on cinema:
The F-word was recorded in a dictionary in 1598 (John Florio's A Worlde of Wordes, London: Arnold Hatfield for Edw. Blount). It is remotely derived from the Latin 'futuere' and Old German 'ficken/fucken' meaning 'to strike or penetrate', which had the slang meaning 'to copulate.' A Brazilian intellectual Paulo Francis (1930-97) loved movies, but used to stand up & leave any screening room as soon as he heard the foul, expletive word for the 2nd or 3rd during the screening. Well, he didn't live enough to repeal ¨The Wolf of Wall Street,¨which had more utterances of the f-word than any other non-documentary film in cinema history. The ¨dirty¨ word was used 506 times over the 180min runtime. But the single most beepable movie of all times, dropping 857 f-bombs, was itself titled likewise — a documentary about the use of the very word. Yet the number of bad words in The Wolf is probably the least offensive thing about it. It’s the least of the protagonist’s crimes. The Wolf also has the largest number of copulations in any non-porn movie. It's all about excessive obscenity onto every imaginable vice. The brokering wolves perform more blows, screw more hookers, devour more sheep, throw away more dough, urinate on more legal documents than any of us can ever imagine. I list below a number of representatives within such an odd trend. I do know that sex sells well. I shall never understand the general public's crave for a particular word and its relevant mother-cognates, though. That is definitely not Le 7ème Art.
