Movies I Love That Everyone Else Hates
These aren't exactly "guilty pleasures", these are just movies that I personally consider to be underrated. I'm not trying to say that these movies are "objectively good" (they're not), but I do feel like they're good in their own right, and get WAY too much hate for incomprehensible reasons.

- DirectorTsuneo KobayashiStarsJunko TakeuchiNana MizukiJun FukuyamaHinata Hyuga's younger sister has been kidnapped, so Naruto must do what he can to save her.I had this movie on my "guilty pleasures" list at one point, but honestly, I don't feel guilty for liking this movie at all.
I'm sure nobody was expecting this to be a NaruHina movie. It was first announced in 2012, and eventually revealed to be a "love story" in 2014 (about a few months before the film's release in Japan). So of course every kind of Naruto shipper jumped on the bandwagon and came up with many different theories on who Naruto was going to end up with by the end of the movie. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a NaruHina fan (I've been shipping those two for nearly a decade now), so I was completely ecstatic when my ship finally became canon at the end of the manga. Unfortunately, many other Naruto shippers from the west weren't happy about that, which prompted them to create fake accounts to downvote the movie on certain websites, including YahooJapan.
Now, I am aware that this movie has flaws. It has pacing issues within the first 30 minutes, and it uses some conventional Hollywood clichés, such as the "awkward misunderstanding" and the "supposed liar reveal". The movie actually deserves criticism for those things, but what it DOESN'T deserve is criticism for simply being a NaruHina movie, the most annoying criticism being: "NARUHINA DOESN'T HAVE ANY DEVELOPMENT OUTSIDE OF THIS MOVIE!!!"
I'm sorry, but have you even READ the manga?! More specifically, have you read chapters 42, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 98, 103, 104, 437, 441, 490, 559, 615, 662, 677, 691 and 699? All of those chapters had important NaruHina moments in them. If you're not fond of NaruHina, that's fine, but don't be biased and say that NaruHina had no development. Kishimoto even admitted that he wanted NaruHina to be endgame since day 1. Look it up on SaiyanIsland or Animenewsnetwork if you don't believe me! - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppOrlando BloomKeira KnightleyCaptain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, find Jack Sparrow, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle.I'm not even sure why people hate this movie to begin with! Sure, it's got a complicated plot and some moments in this movie are very silly, but you know what? The first 2 movies were like that too. This was a perfect ending to the PotC trilogy before Stranger Tides came out.
- DirectorStephen J. AndersonStarsDaniel HansenWesley SingermanAngela BassettLewis is a brilliant inventor who meets mysterious stranger named Wilbur Robinson, whisking Lewis away in a time machine and together they team up to track down Bowler Hat Guy in a showdown that ends with an unexpected twist of fate.As you might already know, this movie was a huge flop at the box office, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as its reputation suggests.
Sure, the villain was lame, and the story uses a lot of 90's kids movie clichés, but it has a very strong message and the characters are all very likable in their own unique way. Home on the Range and Chicken Little may have tarnished Disney's reputation in the early 2000's, but in my humble opinion, Meet the Robinsons was the film that put them back on the right track. - DirectorBill KroyerStarsSamantha MathisChristian SlaterRobin WilliamsThe magical inhabitants of a rainforest fight to save their home, which is threatened by logging and a polluting force of destruction called Hexxus. Not every movie we enjoy as kids is going to age well when we become adults, but in the case of FernGully, I still don't see what's so "bad" about it. Is it a perfect movie? No, but it has become the butt of every "bad environmental movie" joke every since the Nostalgia Critic and Nostalgia Chick reviewed it.
I'm not saying their criticisms towards it were completely wrong. The two main characters are rather bland, and the 90's rap music date the movie pretty badly, but story wise, it's not half as bad as Doug and Lindsay make it out to be.
Is it preachy? Yes, but so are Bambi, Nausicaa, and Princess Mononoke. I know a lot of environmental-friendly movies for kids tend to be very hamfisted and insult the intelligence of their target audience, but at least FernGully took some risks and wasn't afraid of being creepy or dark (seriously, who wasn't afraid of Hexxus as a kid in the 90's?).
Childhood nostalgia aside, this movie has wonderful animation, a beautiful orchestral score from Alan Silvestri, and a decent voice cast (Rest in Peace, Robin Williams). - DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardTy SimpkinsA new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.I had a lot of fun watching this movie. It wasn't "sexist" like everyone else claimed, it had an engaging story, and the humans characters were decent (when they weren't being annoying).
- DirectorRob MarshallStarsAnna KendrickMeryl StreepChris PineA witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree.I honestly wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did. I've never seen the original Broadway version, but I was aware that it existed, so I was surprised to hear that Disney was making a film version. However, after reading the lukewarm reviews from fans of the original Broadway show, I started having doubts about the film, that is until I actually watched it.
It's hard for me to compare this film to a Broadway show that I've never even seen, but as a standalone film, I think Into the Woods works out just fine. Meryl Streep is no Bernadette Peters, but she was a great witch in her own right, and whether you're watching the film version or Broadway version, the songs are still pretty damn catchy. - DirectorBobby FarrellyPeter FarrellyStarsLaurence FishburneChris RockDavid Hyde PierceA policeman white blood cell, with the help of a cold pill, must stop a deadly virus from destroying the human they live in, Frank.I know this movie kind of already has a cult following, but I feel like it's starting to get more hate as of recently. It may not as intelligent or awe-inspiring as Inside Out, but it doesn't need to be.
I know that some scenes in this movie can be gross, but...it's a movie about body health, so it's SUPPOSED to be a little gross. And I know it follows all the typical "buddy cop movie" cliches, but so does Rush Hour and the Men in Black movies.
Also, this might come off as a bit biased, but I think Thrax is literally one of the BEST Non-Disney villains in the history of animated films. - DirectorPeter SohnStarsJeffrey WrightFrances McDormandMaleah Nipay-PadillaIn a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. This might just be the most underrated Pixar movie ever. I'm not saying it's the "best" Pixar movie, but it's definitely underrated. Surprisingly, the hate for this movie seems to go two different ways: either parents hate it for being too violent and scary for kids, or adults with no children hate it for being too juvenile and childish. Personally, I think it's neither.
There have been a LOT of other Disney and Pixar films that were much darker and scarier. Another complaint I often hear, is that it "borrows too much from The Lion King." I could be wrong, but didn't The Lion King borrow some things from Kimba and Bambi?
Anyway, I had a great time seeing this movie in the theater with my family (my two small nephews even enjoyed it), and while it may not be one of the best Pixar movies, I still think it's a HUGE improvement over Brave, Cars 2, and Monsters University. - DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppFreddie HighmoreDavid KellyCharlie, a young boy from an impoverished family, and four other kids win a tour of an amazing chocolate factory run by an imaginative chocolatier, Willy Wonka, and his staff of Oompa-Loompas.I feel like many people have been way too hard on this movie since it first came out. It's not as bad as its reputation implies. Johnny Depp may not be the "definitive" version of Willy Wonka (that honor still goes to Gene Wilder), but I thought he was pretty hilarious in this movie, and the child actors did a pretty decent job too.
If I were to point two things about this movie that actually bothered me, it would be the Oompa Loompas and the daddy issues subplot involving Willy Wonka's father. Other than that, I think this is a pretty decent (if not perfect) adaptation of the Roald Dahl book. - DirectorDon BluthGary GoldmanStarsMatt DamonDrew BarrymoreBill PullmanA young man learns that he has to find a hidden Earth ship before an enemy alien species does in order to secure the survival of humanity.Don Bluth has put himself through a lot of trouble catching up to Disney, ever since The Little Mermaid destroyed All Dogs go to Heaven at the box office. He's made a few duds in the (I'm looking at you, Troll in Central Park), but eventually pulled himself through in 1997 with Anastasia. After that, he made Titan A.E., which tanked at the box office and was almost completely forgotten since then.
Titan A.E. may not be the most interesting animated sci-fi film, but it has its bright spots. The animation is typical A+ Don Bluth animation, though the CGI looks a bit primitive in some areas, and I think the early 2000's pop/rock soundtrack fits in with the movie quite well. Though the plot is very unoriginal, and the characters needed a bit more depth. Despite those flaws, this is easily one of the better Don Bluth movies. - DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster. This movie was a lot of fun for me. It had a lot of paces issues in the first half, and some of the jokes were stupid, but I think all the scenes with Thor and Loki completely make up for it.
- DirectorDean ParisotStarsJim CarreyTéa LeoniAlec BaldwinWhen an affluent couple lose all their money following a series of blunders, they turn to a life of crime to make ends meet.Okay, so this movie has a lot of mixed messages on stealing and robbing for your own benefit, but it has a lot of moments that genuinely make me laugh out loud (and not a lot of comedies really do that for me nowadays).
