Oscars 2017: First-Time Nominee Spotlight4 of 18
Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield is nominated in the Best Actor category for Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson’s latest work. In the film, the American-British thespian plays Desmond Doss, a pacifist combat medic who, due to his faith, won't use or even carry weapons and becomes the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor in U.S. history. Garfield burst onto the scene by playing Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in the Best Picture-nominated The Social Network before donning the blue-and-red spandex of everyone's favorite web-slinging superhero in the two The Amazing Spider-Man films. He also appeared in another Oscar-nominated film this year with Martin Scorsese's Silence, playing a priest who travels to Japan to locate his mentor and spread Christianity. Up next for this rising talent are two films, Breathe and Under the Silver Lake, both expected out in 2017.
