Oscars 2017: First-Time Nominee Spotlight12 of 18
Mike Mills
American film auteur Mike Mills is nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category for 20th Century Women — which he directed as well. The Annette Bening-led project focuses on three women from three different generations coming together to raise a teen boy, the eldest of the trio’s son, in the 1970s. Previously, Mills wrote and and directed two other films, Thumbsucker and Beginners — the latter of which was based on the filmmaker’s own father who came out at at 75, just five years before his death, and won Christopher Plummer an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Mills, who used to be in an indie rock band named Butter 08, has done quite a bit of work in the music industry.
