- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAndrew GarfieldAdam DriverLiam NeesonIn the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.(January 2017) With Ueda and Kanako. Heavy but beautiful (scenery wise and theme wise). Great acting by the protagonists as well as some Japanese actors. Too bad it was not filed in Nagasaki...
- DirectorCellin GluckStarsToshiaki KarasawaKoyukiBorys SzycAgainst his country's orders, a Japanese diplomat issues visas to refugees, saving over 6,000 Jewish lives at the outbreak of World War II.(February 2017) At Jewish History Museum, with the Director. Story is good, so no need to do much to be worth remembering. Sometimes not enough explanation of what something was happening...
- StarsJorge PerugorríaCarlos Enrique AlmiranteLuis Alberto GarcíaFollow lieutenant Conde as he solves crime, beds beautiful women and navigates the corruption and politics of his Havana police department(February 2017) Amazing, especially after visiting Havana and fell in love with the city/country. Victor's suggestion. According to him, some shots were made in Tenerife. The protagonist is a good middle-aged detective, and some past love interests showed up. Kind of reminded me of Secret in her eyes (the original).
- DirectorMike NewellStarsJavier BardemGiovanna MezzogiornoBenjamin BrattFlorentino, rejected by the beautiful Fermina at a young age, devotes much of his adult life to carnal affairs as a desperate attempt to heal his broken heart.(February 14, 2017) Finished the novel yesterday and I thought it's appropriate for the VDay. Not as detailed and magical as the book, as expected, but visual feels fresh, livelier than the novel, which is nice. Felt like I experienced the story from a different perspective.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.(November 2017) Disappointing. I later learned that it was disappointing sale-wise as well. I guess many scenes gave me a sense of deja-vu (most notably, sex with a program, a la Her). In fairness, it's hard to avoid it if the original was so influential many movies are affected by the original and expanded from the theme of the original. And it might not be a good thing if the director pays too much respect to the original, and the original is considered to be edgy. You cannot keep the edge if you respect the edgy original.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.(November 2017) I am a bit ashamed that I did not see the original until I am preparing for watching the sequel. Very original, considering it was made in 1982. I can see influences to many Sci-Fi made after this movie. A true classic.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.(November 2017) Watched as I was preparing for watching Blade Runner 2049. Well-done. Subtle, deep, and thought-provoking. As a researcher myself, the ways those two supposedly-extraordinary researchers talk and behave look funny and unrealistic, but I guess still I enjoyed the movie.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsMartin FreemanIan McKellenRichard ArmitageA reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.(October 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsIan McKellenMartin FreemanRichard ArmitageThe dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, their homeland, from the dragon Smaug.(October 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsIan McKellenMartin FreemanRichard ArmitageBilbo Baggins and company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness.(October 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorSunao KatabuchiStarsNonAva PickardKenna PickardA spirited 18-year-old woman is married off to a man she barely knows as she combats the daily struggles of living in Hiroshima during World War II.(October 2017) Japanese animation. Very highly praised in Japan, but I didn't like much. Lot of cliche moments that the film maker though cool but indeed are cliches. Sort of self-masturbating movie that self-masturbating young Japanese like.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.(October 2017) Fun entertainment. Nothing more or nothing less. Don't try to be deep or emotional!
- DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsTaraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle MonáeThe story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.(October 2017) Very mainstream American movie. Happy ending, with a little bit of social issues mixed in. Something I am very happy to learn, that those womena played significant roles in NASA space programs.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.(August 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.(August 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.(August 2017) Well done entertainment.
- DirectorNiki CaroStarsJessica ChastainJohan HeldenberghDaniel BrühlKeepers of the Warsaw Zoo, Antonina and Jan Zabinski, must save hundreds of people and animals during the Nazi invasion in WWII Poland.(April 2017) Probably the first movie watched with Nicole. Not splashy but heart-warming.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.(February 2017) Very interesting. Twisted story, and a lot of social element mixed in a suspenseful story.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderKatherine WaterstonBilly CrudupThe crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.(October 2017) So so. Interesting ending, but a lot of holes and inconsistencies in the story.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDavid JamesJason CopeViolence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.(November 2017) Interestingly done. Sci-Fi but with a not-so-subtle political message and made us think.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRebecca FergusonJeremy RennerEthan and his team take on their most impossible mission yet when they have to eradicate an international rogue organization as highly skilled as they are and committed to destroying the IMF.(November 2017) Don't remember how many times I watched this. First-rate entertainment.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.(December 2017) Seems a bit too much Disney in it (not in a good way). Disappointed after Force Awakens. Didn't like the chubby Asian character.
