While James Franco's involvement with the film may seem like a headscratcher, it was the network's idea. Spelling reveals, "It started with Lifetime, and they wanted James to do it. They had a lot of success with doing the TV movie "A Deadly Adoption" with Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig; and so, they wanted to remake one of their cult classics. But the whole idea was completely James’ vision: the whole story he created, the whole lesbian vampire take on it. They called me and said, 'We’re remaking it. We’re doing it with James Franco. Obviously we can’t picture it without you. Would you come aboard?' I was like, 'Yes, I would love to come aboard and produce.'"
