"Better Things" is part of the new breed of half-hour shows, including "Louie" and "Transparent," that blend comedy and emotional drama. Adlon was initially concerned that there weren't enough jokes. She explains, "We’d be doing scenes, and my crew would be in tears. And I would look up at everybody and say, 'This isn’t a comedy! What am I doing?'" Adlon says she ultimately realized, "I’m more interested in feelings than in big laughs. If you stay away from trying to put buttons on scenes and let real moments lie and live, you’re going to get the funny out of the dark."
