- DirectorJeff NicholsStarsRuth NeggaJoel EdgertonWill DaltonThe story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court's historic 1967 decision. We remember 1967 as the year of the Summer of Love, when college students transformed America by growing out their hair, smoking marijuana, and having casual sex. This drama tells the little-known true story of the Lovings, a working-class married couple in Virginia that actually changed the nation's laws. When the Lovings were arrested for violating a state law that prohibited interracial marriage, they took their case to the Supreme Court. Fortunately, this movie is not a dry history lesson. It's a love story. Stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton were recently nominated for Gotham Awards, and, based on the trailer, they have fantastic chemistry. — Sara
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 4 - CreatorPeter MorganStarsClaire FoyOlivia ColmanImelda StauntonFollows the political rivalries and romances of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the events that shaped Britain for the second half of the 20th century.Shamefully I know very little about Queen Elizabeth’s early days, but I plan to make up for that on Nov. 4 when the “The Crown” drops all 10 episodes on Netflix. Creator/writer Peter Morgan has given us stellar biopics in the past, Rush, The Last King of Scotland, and The Queen to name a few, so we are in very good hands. Claire Foy stars as Queen Elizabeth II and the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh. — Vanessa
"The Crown" premieres Friday, Nov. 4 on Netflix. - DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.A decade after the bloody, bone-crunching Apocalypto, Mel Gibson’s return to the director’s chair is no less shocking or relentlessly graphic. Hacksaw Ridge is the true story of Desmond T. Doss, a WWII US Army medic who became the first conscientious objector to win the Medal of Honor. Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, saved dozens of lives in acts of incredible bravery, and this film honors both him and those men. With battle scenes that have drawn comparisons to Saving Private Ryan, Garfield and the film are already generating awards buzz. — Michael
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 4 - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.“There are days that define your story beyond your life, like the day they arrived ... ”
That quote from the first four seconds of the trailer was all it took for me to sign up for this one. Although I am all in when it comes to cerebral sci-fi, first contact, and alien invasion movies, I’m especially excited for Arrival as it looks to be both thinky and contemplative, reminiscent of Contact but combined with the looming threat of world destruction found in “Childhood's End.” This invasion might not be as action-packed as Independence Day but the floating monoliths hovering over the open field in the Arrival evoke a quieter and more ominous threat. I can’t wait for this one. — Vanessa
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 11 - DirectorKelly Fremon CraigStarsHailee SteinfeldHaley Lu RichardsonBlake JennerHigh-school life gets even more unbearable for Nadine when her best friend, Krista, starts dating her older brother. Now confirmed by multiple close sources, Hailee Steinfeld successfully conveys the necessary level of lovable self-absorption to make this high school comedy worth repeat viewings, which is exactly what i want from the genre. Whoever thought of playing Steinfeld off of a curmudgeon-y Woody Harrelson earns my affection, and anyone who has learned the hard way how close together the send and delete functions can be on your phone, this is your movie of the season. — Arno
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 18 - StarsJeremy ClarksonJames MayRichard HammondJeremy, Richard and James embark on an adventure across the globe, driving new and exciting automobiles from manufacturers all over the world. Can someone queue up "The Boys Are Back in Town" by Thin Lizzy? That's more like it. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are literally racing back onto the scene with their new show "The Grand Tour." 'Round and 'round the globe they go. What's going to happen? I don't think anybody knows. But I certainly can't wait to find out. — Lance
"The Grand Tour" begins streaming Friday, Nov. 18, on Amazon Video - DirectorBen YoungerStarsMiles TellerAaron EckhartKatey SagalThe inspirational story of World Champion Boxer Vinny Pazienza who, after a near fatal car crash which left him not knowing if he'd ever walk again, made one of sports' most incredible comebacks. There's just something about boxing that inspires such great storytelling on the big screen. On the one hand, there's the immediacy and no-nonsense nature of the activity: pummeling your fellow combatant into submission. And on the other, there's an endless stream of heroic (and tragic) characters: modern-day gladiators who find themselves fighting personal demons in addition to their physical opponents. Here's a stirring look at '80s boxing sensation Vinny Pazienza (Miles Teller) and his quest to regain a second shot at glory in the ring. — Bret
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 18 - DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonAlison SudolIn 1926, magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York during his worldwide tour to research and rescue magical creatures as something mysterious leaves trails of destruction in the city, threatening to expose the wizarding world. Can you feel it? The *magic* is back! So, you’re probably wondering, what makes these beasts so fantastic? And why are they hiding? All great questions. Get ready to learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the magical creatures of the wizarding world. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is a pre-Harry Potter spin-off, set 70 years before Harry Potter first arrived in Hogwarts.
The movie follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) on his adventures in New York City’s top secret community of witches and wizards. Even though there is strong correlation between the worlds of Fantastic Beasts and the Harry Potter franchise, I’m anxiously anticipating to see how this new story line will play out in this mixed world of No-Majes (aka Muggles). This will be the first of a five, you read that correctly, a FIVE-film series. Potterheads, rejoice! — Akimi

Check out Everything We Learned on Our Set Visit while you count down the days until Nov. 18. - DirectorKenneth LonerganStarsCasey AffleckMichelle WilliamsKyle ChandlerA depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies. This film is essential viewing on my path to the upcoming movie awards season. Casey Affleck is reminding everyone how good he really is, and the film is already generating some Oscar buzz. Plus, it's directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who has been nominated for screenplay Oscars twice and co-wrote Gangs of New York. The story looks to be filled with painfully imperfect characters on journeys of love, heartbreak, and redemption. Truly intrigued, and I have to know more. — Lance
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 18 - CreatorHagai LeviSarah TreemStarsDominic WestRuth WilsonMaura TierneyA struggling novelist and a young waitress strike up an extramarital relationship that promises to forever change the course of their lives.I will admit I was a bit disappointed when "The Affair" switched up its he said/she said structure last season. It was that perspective that made me fall for the show which was part love story, part mystery. But it soon became a welcoming change to have two new perspectives from Cole and Helen, and added another layer to the drama. And oh, what drama there was until the end! After the big reveal at the end of last season, I can't wait to see where the show will go next. I just hope that now that we "know" the secret, it can keep the mystery going. — Michelle
"The Affair" premieres Sunday, Nov. 20 on Showtime. - DirectorWarren BeattyStarsLily CollinsHaley BennettTaissa FarmigaThe unconventional love story of an aspiring actress, her ambitious driver, and their eccentric boss, the legendary billionaire Howard Hughes.Wait, what?! A movie about an eccentric multimillionaire with a peculiar and particular world view that causes those around him to pause and go, "Hmm"? Welcome to Warren Beatty's latest directorial project, where he also plays famed entrepreneur and eccentric Howard Hughes. Of particular interest to Star Wars fans is Alden Ehrenreich, who plays a driver in a forbidden romance, in a role that may or may not foreshadow his work as everyone's favorite smuggler in the much anticipated Han Solo film. — Bret
In U.S. theaters starting Wednesday, Nov. 23 - DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale.We all know that when Jake Gyllenhaal gets into seriously dark territory, it often results in his best work. But what about Amy Adams? She's never really had such an opportunity until now, which is one of many reasons I am biting my nails to the quick until director Tom Ford's follow-up to the exquisite A Single Man is released. — Arno
Enters limited release in U.S. theaters starting Wednesday, Nov. 23 - DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. After watching the incredibly moving trailer for Lion, I was amazed to find out that not only was this based on a true story about how a young Indian boy found his way home, but he did so using Google Earth. To me it speaks both to the power of never giving up hope and power of technology when it is used for good. — Michelle
In U.S. theaters starting Friday, Nov. 25 - CreatorDavid PastorÀlex PastorStarsSean TealeAllison MillerEddie RamosA man attempts to thwart a giant corporation that seems to have unlimited power. If "Mr. Robot" protagonist Elliot Alderson created a television series, it would be this dystopian saga. "Incorporated" imagines an America where, in the wake of a government collapse, corporations take over most societal functions. Unfortunately, instead of a libertarian paradise, the result is a world in which executives live in luxurious gated communities, everyone else dwells in slums, and a bad performance review can literally ruin someone's life. The most frightening aspect of this premise is that it's totally plausible. — Sara
"Incorporated" premieres Wednesday, Nov. 30, on Syfy.
