- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.Everything about this was absolutely sublime. The characters, the ending to the X-Men timeline, the acting, the action, the direction, everything. A great way for Hugh Jackman to go out for playing Wolverine. Probably my favourite entry in the franchise and definitely my favourite Hugh Jackman performance as Wolverine. A (4.65/5)
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.Fantastic film. Best screenplay of 2017 by far, great performances, especially from Jamie Foxx and Ansel Esgort, very entertaining and a cast of memorable characters. A- (4.4/5)
- DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.Pixar have done it again! A really touching beautifully animated film about family with a fantastic cast of characters, including one of the best character arcs in Pixar history with Hector. Whilst the basic plot of the film is very similar to other works by Disney (protagonsit wants to do something that their family doesn't agree with and they go an adventure etc etc) the film still feels very original. My only real issue here is that the songs do feel very forgettable (ironic considering one's called Remember Me) which seems like a nitpick but in a film which is largely about music is something that can't really go unnoticed. That being said, that one complaint doesn't outweigh all the positives here. A- (4.3/5)
- DirectorBill CondonStarsEmma WatsonDan StevensLuke EvansA selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner. One of my favourite Disney classics retold in live action is everything I could've hoped for. The characters are still incredibly likeable like Luminere, Belle, Beast, Cogsworth etc. and the songs are re-done very well. The performances from Emma Watson and Dan Stevens are fantastic (even if there's a lot of autotune on Watson's voice). These live action remakes and re-tellings are getting better and better A- (4.2/5)
- DirectorChris McKayStarsWill ArnettMichael CeraRosario DawsonA cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.Whilst I preferred the original, I still thought this was well animated, fun, had good, well written characters and an interesting (but kinda stupid) storyline. A- (4.1/5)
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandMichael KeatonRobert Downey Jr.Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.Possibly the most entertaining movie on the list. Tom Holland killed it as Spider-Man and it's nice to see Vulture finally appear in a Spider-Man movie. The Peter Parker scenes were a nice change of pace. My main gripes were a lack of intensity in the action scenes (they were still enjoyable), and the scenes with Iron Man/Tony Stark really feeling annoying. That being said, this is still by far the best Spider-Man movie since 2004 and the second Sam Raimi film, it's light-hearted and fun. B+ (3.95/5)
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.I did think this would be a bit of a soulless cynical cash-in but I actually enjoyed it a lot. The way these 4 teens are portrayed through separate actors in the game they enter is very well done, Jack Black especially was great as the Instagram loving Bethany. I really enjoyed Dwayne Johnson play against type by being the nerdy Spencer and even though Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart are playing characters more similar to those they had before, I still really enjoyed their performances. The action scenes are really entertaining here, even if they do feel a little CGI heavy, but I wasn't really a fan of the villain here. I thought Van Pelt felt a little bit strangely used, just popping up and being a bit creepy, he just didn't have a lot of depth, which was a shame. This is a great bit of fun though, would definitely say it was better than expected. B (3.7/5)
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order. Not as good as I was hoping based off of the trailer and Episode VII, but the action was still very well done and seeing the new characters from Episode VII and seeing some have real development (particularly Kylo Ren) was nice. B- (3.5/5)
- DirectorTrish SieStarsAnna KendrickRebel WilsonBrittany SnowFollowing their win at the world championship, the now separated Bellas reunite for one last singing competition at an overseas USO tour, but face a group who uses both instruments and voices.I really like the first movie, the second one had its problems but I enjoyed it, and I guess the same can be said here. The singing scenes in this film are excellent, as they were in the first two, and it doesn't drag in the same way 'Pitch Perfect 2' does as the plot is interesting as is Amy's relationship with her father as a subplot. That being said, the franchise is starting to go stale, you can only shove "aca" in front of a word so many times before it gets boring and Fat Amy's character in general is just not doing anything for me (Maybe because Rebel Wilson's only characteristic is being a walking fat joke). All in all though, this movie's okay (but for Christ's sake, don't make a 4th one, it's had a good run, let it rest) C (3.2/5)
- DirectorSeth GordonStarsDwayne JohnsonZac EfronAlexandra DaddarioDevoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon butts heads with a brash new recruit, as they uncover a criminal plot that threatens the future of the bay.The story as a whole is predictable and dull, but the movie as a whole is very fun and can be very funny (even if it is pretty cheesey). Mitch was a good lead character (mostly thanks to The Rock and his natural charisma) and some of the other characters (such as Summer, Ronnie and to an extent Leeds) were quite well written. C- (3/5)
- DirectorMichael CuestaStarsDylan O'BrienMichael KeatonSanaa LathanAfter the death of his girlfriend at the hands of terrorists, Mitch Rapp is drawn into the world of counterterrorism, mentored by tough-as-nails former U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Stan Hurley.Michael Keaton and Dylan O'Brien were great and I was really locked in for the first sort of 45 minutes, but the film didn't need to be so serious and sombre with this concept. Not saying it had to be cheesey like 'Commando', but it didn't need to take such a serious tone with a concept like this, it just made the film boring. The action scenes were serviceable but there aren't any that really stick in my mind. D (2.7/5)
- DirectorHany Abu-AssadStarsKate WinsletIdris ElbaBeau BridgesStranded after a tragic plane crash, two strangers must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. When they realize help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across the wilderness.Idris Elba and Kate Winslet are great, but the romance subplot feels forced, the characters are weak and it drags, a lot... E+ (2.4/5)
- DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsVin DieselDonnie YenDeepika PadukoneXander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.Vapid and boring characters, weak narrative and sub-par acting makes this a very bad movie from a technical standpoint, but the action scenes were pretty entertaining and the movie is relatively self-aware of what it is. (I may have placed it lower, but I'd rather watch this again than 'The Mountain Between Us') Also, in the UK, they marketed the movie as if Neymar was one of the key stars, which he isn't... E- (2.1/5)
- DirectorMatt EskandariStarsNora-Jane NooneAlexandra ParkDiane FarrTwo sisters are trapped under the fiberglass cover of an Olympic sized public pool and must brave the cold and each other to survive the harrowing night. The concept's stupid, so I went in expecting a laugh. It just winds out being really boring with poor acting, script and story with characters that are at best forgettable (David, Brie) and at worst detestable (Joana) F- (1.5/5)
- DirectorTony LeondisStarsT.J. MillerJames CordenAnna FarisGene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.Okay I knew this would be bad but I wasn't expecting it to be THIS bad.... The most detestable characters, stupid concept, below average animation, dumb jokes leaving a cinema audience completely silent and being either boring or infuriating. U (0.1/5)
